Solid dystopian YA book for the right audience, probably not for adult readers.

The synopsis makes it seem like this book will open with at least a chapter or few, setting the scene of Nadia and her isolation of being 'the only person left alive.' Unfortunately that doesn't happen, as she has already made contact with Jake in the opening scene.

The beginning struggles with pacing, it feels very rushed. Nothing has time to 'settle'. So much happens within the first 20 pages. At least 3-4 months of time has elapsed but without any sense of time actually passing to the reader.

The characters were pretty standard but the main problem was the narration. The story was told through two people, Nadia and Jake, but their voices were exactly the same! I kept forgetting whose POV I was reading and had it not been for their name appearing before each chapter, I would have been completely lost.

I love the dystopian, post-apocalyptic setting and I absolutely love the concept of the virus. I really like how only a select few were immune and managed to survive.

I thought the reason why they were immune was okay but the book lost me shortly after that with the introduction of Sloan. It was just a little too weird for me and the story didn't go in the direction I was hoping for, so I didn't continue any further.

I'd recommend this book to young teens.

This book started off as a straightforward post apocalyptic story. I was immediately hooked. Then when took a radical left turn as we delved further and further into how/why the apocalypse happened. But, i can say i disliked the twist. Weird? Yes. Creepy? Yup. But the story kept my entertained. The only real issue i have the ending. For such a dark story, the ending was way to happy.

The disaster everyone has been predicting has come to pass. Life as we know it has stopped completely. No where can you find any trace of survivors other than yourself, so you start making a plan on how to survive. But there are more survivors. Who can be trusted and can your plan work with their? I love dystopian stories and this one has some definite twists that I've not seen any where else. LJ Thomas built a world "after" but what he does with it is pretty engrossing. I'm going to have to make sure I read the next book.

I really enjoyed this book. Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read and review it.

Overall, it really was an interesting story. It’s not your cookie cutter end of the world book like so many are. There were twists and turns I didn’t expect.
I enjoyed the character building and each character individually as well.

After nuclear fall out, a girl is on her own trying to survive. She just knows it’s the end of everything she’s ever known and loved.. that is, until she hears another persons voice over her radio. Her journey truly begins as she searches for others to start new and survive... only, things aren’t exactly as they seem and as they find each other clues fall into place that someone else entirely might be going on!

If you’re a fan of post apocalyptic and dystopian books, you should definitely give this one a read! It’s dark, real, covers heavy topics like survivors guilt quite well, and it’ll leave you thinking even after you’ve finished!

Story was pretty steady paced. Nadia, Zara, Coby, and Jake were likable and each had their own strengths and issues to deal with as they tried to survive the end of the world. Story was unique. Ended well with no cliffhangers. If you like The 100 and Fifth Wave this one is for you.

Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a decent YA post apocalypse novel. Nadia is alone surviving in a world after a deadly virus kills almost everyone. She meets Jake and together they form a friendship and romance. They later meet Zara and Cody and discover rather quickly after meeting that they share the same birthday. Now here's where I felt the story moved too quickly. Cody mentions they could be adopted and they go and find the adoption agency without any trouble. I felt like the author serves everything in a neat little package and does not do enough to built the suspense.
Overall worth the read and a good start to a promising series.

First, I read a lot of "end of the world" fiction. It is astounding how much is out there. And honestly, most of it is crap. (hmm can I say that on here?). However, this book gave me hope that there is still good survival stories to be told.

I liked the characters, the world building, the story line, the emotions, the writing style.... well, you get the point.

I liked how this was a bit different from what I expected. It took a little turn that I didn't see coming.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and from net galley, which I appreciate. This did not impact my review. I try to give my honest opinion so that people reading my reviews get a true sense of whether to give a book a shot or not. In this case - try it - you will like it.

Please note that this book does contain heavy topics that may be triggering to some readers such as suicide and self harm. Read with caution.

If you are a fan of apocalypse stories, you will want to get your hands on this one!

When nuclear warfare wipes out the world, a girl is left to fend for herself. But it may not be the end of everything when she hears a voice on her radio signaling that she isn't the last one alive.

So her quest begins to find them and continue to survive. But soon, things begin to uncover that she isn't sure she's ready to hear, and the world's secrets are uncovered.

This book was pretty enjoyable. It's a story that sticks with you long after reading it, and is perfect for dystopian readers as well.

I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars.

I’ve read a lot of post-apocalyptic books, but I’ve never read one quite like this! What begins with a fairly familiar after-the-end setup quickly spirals into something far wilder than your average survival story.

One thing this book does quite well is address survivors’ guilt and unhealthy coping mechanisms. I appreciated that even as the book progressed into the heavier science fiction narrative and away from the survival focus, the characters’ emotional fallout from the situation didn’t disappear.

The romance was handled well, too. I’m not someone who likes romance usually but this one really seemed to develop from the characters knowing and liking one another.

An area in which the book felt weak was its plot. There wasn’t really a central storyline, it felt almost like a prologue to a series (which I’m guessing it is), and as a result was more about setting up a larger story without telling one of its own. It’s more a series of twists and reactions, and spends a bit too much time on characters debating how to react. That may have been the point but it made the book drag in places.

This is a fantastic read. I only meant to start it last night, get a feel for it, but I found myself desperately still reading at fartoolate o'clock. The story of how four teenagers survive the end of the world is brilliantly nailbiting, and I really wanted to know what happened next. The characters are well done and I thought the twists were brilliant, just enough foreshadowing to be effective without blowing the surprise completely.

I'd love to read more set in this world!

I feel like everything about this book shocked me. Obviously, I will not spoil anything for you, but there were multiple moments I was shook. I think what was interesting to me about this book was that it was a book about people more than anything else. When you read books like this that are about the end of the world, they tend to be about politics and society more so than people, in my opinion. It was refreshing to see people survive and connect instead of oppressive governments and the like.

In terms of the writing, I think the story flowed very well and the pacing was very good. In general, it was very well written and I think it’s one of those books you could get caught up in very easily.

If you are someone who likes to read about the end of the world and you’re looking for a new take on it, I think you’ll like this. I really enjoyed it.

A bit of a warning, though, these characters do go through some mental health struggles. So, if you have triggers associated with self-harm, suicide, or PTSD please take care of yourself and just know that these are topics that are discussed.

After each thinking they're the last one left alive, a group of teens discover they have something startling in common after the apparent end of the world.

It's nice to see an end of the world story that deals a little in how people might actually react. (That's still mostly 'a lot better than I would', but that's neither here nor there.) I liked how each individual character's skills were important, but not so important that everything would be lost if that specific group of people hadn't happened to fall together. (I'm pretty sure Sloan is my favourite.) I'd love to read more in this series, there's plenty of room for it at the ending.

I am a little curious about one thing, but it's a spoiler, so don't read the next part if you haven't finished the book yet.

How come none of the teens knew about the survivor compounds before? Nadia and Jake have been wandering around, listening to the radio, for quite a while, but they never picked up these transmissions?

Still, it's a very tiny thing in a well written book. I hope there's more to come.

What would you do if the whole world was wiped out by a disease or infection.?

Nadia is on her own after the world is wiped out. Bodies lie dead in the lonely streets that used to thrive with many people. Her whole family is dead, what should Nadia do?
Is it possible there are people still out there somewhere?

Nadia been on her own for so long that she started to think noone was left. Until one day she came across someone else looking for survivors. His name was Jake.
Nadia and Jake spent hours talking on the radio and it feels like the most natural thing in the world. Although he tells her to slow it down when she says it might be left to them to repopulate the world.

After developing a strong friendship, they finally agree to meet. Nadia and Jake have not seen another human in 4 months.

As they journeyed on they find another couple - boy and girl in the same boat - just friends. trying to survive in this treacherous world.

When Jake thinks one of them is hiding something, he tells Nadia to be careful. But she doesn't understand after all this couple have shown nothing but kindness and have got their back,.

But as Nadia digs deeper into how they all survived the virus. Secrets begin to unravel. Are they in danger? How come they did not die like the others?

A brilliant Young Adult book! The plot was quite different to what I had been reading but it just made it more interesting.

The author manages to build up a lot of suspense and action. The more I delved into the book the more unique it became.

In fact I hope this to be the start of a series. As I read the ending I felt like this book has enough brilliant potential to be turned into a series.!

“The game was really a simple question: what would I give up to have things back the way they were? Eventually I had to limit myself, because the answer was always: anything. My hearing, my sight, any or all of my limbs. So I set the bar lower. What would I give for a day?”
-L.J. Thomas

With the genre of science fiction growing within recent years, the number of young adult novels have constructed dystopian worlds that could possibly show how our current actions could affect our future. We Survivors narrates the story from the perspective of four teenagers who remain alive after The End killed of the rest of Earth’s population in a series of waves. Initially living the lonely, but necessarily wilderness lifestyle, each of the characters work to overcome their own personal struggles individually while also working together in order to find survivors and confront a larger obstacle. Though somewhat cliche and predictable at times, Thomas beautifully creates a multi-layer dystopian story about teenagers needing to survive in a destroyed world, but also dealing with mental health and regular teenage issues.

Nadia thought she was the last survivor. The last living person on Earth; but that all changed when she heard a single coming from her radio, from a person named Jake. Relieved that she was not alone, Nadia agrees to meet Jake, following several months of communication over the radio. The meeting, the first type of face-to-communication since Nadia’s father died, was the beginning of finding the reason for The End. Deciding to stick together, the two then find two more survivors, Zara and Coby, who plan to search for the reason for their survival. To find their purpose and look for other survivors, the four teenagers then begin the initially somewhat pleasant journey.

Gradually, the four begin to deal with their own struggles as they grow closer as a group. One deals with mental health issues due to her losses and prolonged isolation, one with survivor’s guilt over the death of his brother, another with the accidental murder of someone close to her, and the last of lying to those who trust him. Even with their own inner conflicts, the group is able to trust one another enough and support each other like a family. Something each and every one of them missed. Furthermore, with each additional piece of information that leads to their connected history, something else is thrown at them, or some other conflict occurs on the side. These events lead up to the major plot shift in the story which then concludes the remainder of the novel as well as ties any loose ends from the beginning. Why are the four the only survivors? Are there any others? How long will the survivors survive?

Overall, this novel was very enjoyable and fun to read even though there was some room for improvement. While Thomas does a decent job at giving each character some development as the novel progresses, I felt as though the relationships between characters often seemed a bit rushed and somewhat undeveloped. After Nadia first hears Jake, they communicate over radio and then meet when the story begins. At this meeting, the two seemed very close and overly friendly with each other for a first face-to-face meeting. Furthermore, the growing relationship between Zara and another character who appears later on also seemed too rushed and had no substance that was developed for support. At times, the plot also seemed too cliche with the scenes or how certain events concluded. However, Thomas does definitely add moments of surprise that improve the common aspects of the story.

For those who enjoyed Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games, Marie Lu’s Legend, and other dystopian young adult novels, We Survivors creates a piece where there are the common survival aspects of such novels but also the addition of mental health awareness and the growing friendship of a group who were initially wary of each other. With relatable themes and an engaging plot, readers will not be disappointed.

Apocalyptic meets mad scientist

This book has no end of suspense and action. i fell in love with the character, laughed with them cried with them. i loved the way they grew throughout the book. very few books do this but every time i thought i had it figured out another twist would come up and it would go in another direction.
i love the way he had left it open to a sequel and i hope that there will be. i will follow this author in the off chance.
this book will enthrall you from the beginning to end and trust me you wont want to do anything but finish this book but at the same time hoping it never ends.
I love the way the relationships grow throughout the book, and i love the way the book focuses on some not so good topic like self-harming and suicide. unfortunately something that will plague humans until the end of time, even if we do try to ignore it or banish it to the darkness.

Be prepared to stop everything you are doing and read this book in one sitting.
I was expecting another post-apocalyptic book with 4 teenage stars.
BOY was I only partially right!
This book grabs you in and does not let you go. I loved all of the twists and turns of the plot, the mad scientist, the creations, and most importantly the relationships between the characters.
There was a few drawbacks...one..I wish that the author had focused a bit more attention on the waves of the viruses. Give more detail about how the families died, what the virus did, when was the nuclear war, etc.
Second, I did not think that the book needed two narratives as told by Jake and Nadia. I think just having Nadia would have been enough.
Third....there was no need for an epilogue. Just my opinion but everything was wrapped up neat and tidy in the last chapter and the epilogue seemed a bit unnecessary.

OVerall a good, unique, imaginative post apocalyptic book that will make you think differently about cockroaches.
