Review: Another fantastic thriller from K.L. Slater that will keep you on your toes. Single mother Darcy has a scare when her son has an asthma attack at the park. Luckily, a doctor named George is there with his daughter and rushes to the rescue. Darcy is so thankful to George and cannot stop thinking about him. As their relationship progresses, though, Darcy feels like something isn't right. For one, there is his creepy ex-girlfriend who keeps following her. And then there is the housekeeper who seems to hate Darcy. The originality of this book was what got me. I did not guess the ending and because Darcy is made to look like an unstable character from the very beginning, it's hard to tell if she has psychological issues or not. Excellent read! All the stars!

Thank you to Netgalley, K.L. Slater, and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

K.L. Slater's books are always so intense and suspenseful. Single is no different.
Single is a psychological thriller with some romance, a ton of suspense, and a lot of crazy vibes.
I could not put this book down once I started it.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the arc, which I have enjoyed reading.
This is a psychological thriller that has many twists and turns right up to the end of the book. The storyline was excellent and concerned people who control, in so many different ways to get what they want. This was a very complex story, Single by KL Slater, and at times I had to really concentrate to follow the storyline. In the end all of the loose ends then merged into the final plot and the whole story came together.
It was a masterclass in suspense and psychological thrillers that KL Slater excels at.
Highly recommended.

What would you do if everything you knew was essentially a lie? We all have different ways of dealing and coping but it isn’t out of the realms of possibility to believe that some people would sink into depression. That’s what Darcy’s situation in Single has been like for the past four years. Her husband is dead, a fight with an illness took him quickly. But, whilst navigating the heavy, murky waters of grief, she discovers that her husband had been unfaithful. He hadn’t just had an affair, but he essentially was living a double life. He spent half the week with another woman. Her psyche broke and all that while trying to support her two sons who obviously no longer had their dad.

The story is principally told in the perspectives of Darcy and that of handsome, personable Urology Consultant, George Mortimer. He is also a single dad to Romy. Her mum also having passed away. They have so much in common. Two lives that seem ready to move forward, together, after having being dealt a really rubbish set of cards in life. As they become closer you can see that George has more than one skeleton in his closet. The story develops, and it becomes more twisty.

The secondary characters in Single were extremely unlikeable. I know that was the author’s intention but at times I felt like they should have been genuine and caring and they would have got a lot further in their needs and wants. Take Darcy’s sister-in-law for example, she professed to being her best friend and having her best interests at heart, but her actions are in complete conflict with that. Who on earth tells their friend that considering dating again after four years is too soon? It’s just manipulative and controlling to the highest extremes.

Darcy had so much on her plate. When the five of them went to Yorkshire to stay in a lodge at Christmas it really started gaining traction. Odd occurrences, the feeling of being watched, letters, flowers being delivered, photos obviously being taken. George talks about a past girlfriend and Darcy wonders if it could be someone from her past? George’s explanation has the warning bells thumping a deathening beat. What is he hiding?

I did struggle to fully be taken in with the twists in Single and I really wanted to be. I wanted it to be more menacing, more shocking, a complete gasp moment when all was revealed. One incident happened, and I couldn’t help but think if it happened to me, I probably wouldn’t have given it two thoughts. I really wanted more tension, a feeling of balancing on a knifes edge that I just didn’t experience with this story. I enjoyed the story and wouldn’t hesitate on giving K.L. Slaters other books a try.

Kim has done it again with her tenth psychological thriller SINGLE robbing me of yet another night's sleep! But boy, was it worth it! You know that when you pick up a K.L. Slater book you are going to be in for one hell of a ride...and will not be left disappointed. SINGLE was no different.

Darcy Hilton is a single mother with two boys - Harrison (8) and Kane (6) - who discovers a harsh truth about her husband Joel after his death. In the aftermath unable to cope, Darcy has complete breakdown which results in Joel's parents gaining temporary custody of her boys. Three years later, Darcy has her boys back and is well on her way to getting her life back.

Or is she?

Throughout the years since Joel's death, Darcy has come to rely on her in laws a great deal. Her sister-in-law Steph is her best friend and has always been like a sister to her, and Brenda (Joel's mother) has always been on hand to look after the boys when needed. Both women have a spare key to Darcy's Victorian terrace enabling them to come and go freely. In the past, this has always worked well for Darcy, especially when one or the other were bringing the boys back and Darcy was not yet home. But now, Darcy is starting to find her feet again and is beginning to feel a little stifled by the family, and she wonders if she had made a mistake in giving them such a free reign over her life.

Has she made a mistake?

One afternoon Darcy and Steph took the boys to the play park. Whilst they were in a debate about whether Darcy should start dating again, Kane suffers an asthma attack. Darcy panics. Emptying his rucksack, she could not find his inhaler anywhere although she knows she packed it! It seems Kane removed it in place of his toy cars he opted for instead...but Darcy could see that Steph was questioning whether she really did pack it. Feeling helpless, Darcy's cries for help are heard by a passing stranger who swoops in to assist...and who turns out to be a doctor.

George Mortimer is tall, handsome and a Urology surgeon in line for a promotion to head up the urology department at City Hospital. He is also a single father to his 6 year old daughter named Romy. When Darcy sends him a "thank you" note offering to buy him coffee by way of thanks for saving her son's life, the two of them discover they have more in common than they thought...finding themselves comfortable in each other's company.

Darcy falls head over heels for George and as one date leads to another...and another...they soon begin a relationship. But for fear of how her in-laws would react, Darcy keeps their relationship secret until she no longer can.

Then when Darcy gets notice that her Victorian terrace is being sold and Steph confides in her that she knows who is buying it, Darcy realises that the walls are closing in on her new life she has rebuilt. But it all seems to fall into place again when George asks her move in with him and Romy, and Darcy is ecstatic. Her in-laws, less so. In fact, they appear to find fault where ever they can, convinced that Darcy has relapsed and heading for another breakdown.

Are these just some ominous signs of things to come? And who is the mysterious woman with the vacant stare who appears to be following her? Who is sending her sinister messages? Why do Darcy's in-laws get so upset that she is dating again? And why take it so personally? And why is Joel's "other woman" returning to town? Is she the one following her? Leaving her messages?

As Darcy's world begins to crumble, she finds herself wondering - who can she trust?

SINGLE is told in several perspectives - mainly Darcy's but at other times in the third person from her in-laws Brenda and Leonard, Steph's and even George. There is a flashback to 1995 told from the perspective of a young 13 year old boy sent away to boarding school that leaves us pondering how that fits into the bigger picture. When it is revealed it's safe to say it wasn't what I expected.

Needless to say, this is a book where secrets and lies are in abundance. Literally everyone could be good or bad, innocent or guilty. Everyone has a secret and everyone's motives are questionable...and nobody is exactly who they appear to be. There are so many mysteries to solve within this book that will have you questioning just who is unreliable and who isn't. Including Darcy herself!

A story of trust, deception and betrayal, SINGLE is a psychological domestic thriller on a whole new level that will have you turning the pages long into the night. Nothing is as it seems...or rather, no one is who they seem. With twist after twist, you will be left breathless by the end.

My only real flaw with the book is that the 1995 narrative could have been fleshed out a little more because as it stands, it felt a little lost in the rest of the story...and as it was an important part to one part of the story (you'll know when you read it), I felt it wasn't given as much attention as it should have. To do so would have really thrown another twist in.

But how many twists can you have in one book? SINGLE just about has them all. And with so many twists and turns, I was almost getting whiplash from the ride! But what a ride it was!

Kim most certainly is up there as one of my favourite authors. She never fails to disappoint...even if I haven't yet read all of her work, I certainly intend to.

Highly recommended for fans of psychological and domestic thrillers...basically any fan of Shalini or Kim!

I would like to thank #KLSlater, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #Single in exchange for an honest review.

A bit of a slow start but there were so many twists! I couldn't relate to any of the characters but it was a quick read and the ending caught me off-guard so there is the element of surprise. This was another entertaining read from the author.

Having previously read many of K.L. Slater’s psychological thrillers I already knew going into Single to expect good, solid writing. Thankfully, I was right on that count and immediately became engrossed in this latest psychological thriller.

Darcy is a single mother of two boys that while she has them playing at the playground the unthinkable happens and one of her boys falls. Thankfully there was a doctor also at the playground with his daughter and he manages to save Darcy’s son’s life.

Seeing that George, the doctor, didn’t have a ring on his finger and was young and handsome Darcy goes out of her way to thank him for his help. Soon after tracking him down George asks Darcy out and the two begin to date but both have problems in their past that follows them into their new relationship.

Single was typical of K.L. Slater’s work with plenty of twists and turns and engaging writing that drew me right into the story. As the story in this book builds you clearly begin to suspect everyone and don’t know who to trust as the layers are uncovered with every twist. Definitely still a fan and will certainly keep an eye out for her next novel.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

3.5 star rating.

This story packs quite a serious punch at the end that I did not see coming. That's why I gave it 3.5 star rating. The twists and turns this story takes are wicked!!! (It just takes forever to get to them).

Here was my issue and why I rounded down to 3 stars versus up to 4 stars. For me, the story took too long to get rolling, for the meat of the mystery to be revealed and suck me in as a reader. Now once it was, I had a hard time putting it down. But for me that was the last fourth of the book. Also, the main character Darcy just flat out drove me up the wall. In many stories this can work for the benefit of the story and add an extra layer. Not the case for me in this one. Many times I almost put the book down because Darcy was so annoying. I am glad I didn't, that crazy ending makes the book worth reading.

Is this a good storyline? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. Will I check out other books by this author? Yes. Did I love this book? No. It was a good story, but not a great one.

My thanks to K.L. Slater, Bookouture and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
