This book is PERFECT for Veronica Mars fans. I love the messy girl detective, Flora, as well as all the well-developed characters in her life, from ex-CIA gramps to her supportive best friend. This was an excellent murder mystery but also a fun read with great interpersonal relationships and a bit of romance and social commentary. I loved it and look forward to more from Schachte in the future!

The story jumps right into action and keeps the tension high throughout. Flora is stressed, working through so many different issues that she decides to take a proactive approach and solve her friend's murder. Yes, this is classed as a YA, but it kept me reading and my YA days are far behind me. The story does contain many of the trouble topics of today but the author has given her character the right attitude and she works through them all. A good book that I'll gladly share with my book group.

I was ready to not enjoy this book. YA is a tough read usually.

I totally loved Flora - felt sorry for her - wanted to help her!! Great storyline - great relatable characters.

Hope this turns into a series - definitely left me wanting more!

So this is one of those yes and no books. It was fast paced and I loved the characters but on the other hand I think it was way to long and the secondary plot lines just didn't fit.

I struggled with this book. It was a great attempted at a YA Thriller and the pace was excellent but the content felt exaggerated. I had the impression the author tried to cram a lot of stuff into the book at it made it less believable. A Bisexual main character that is a high school PI, her murdered ex is a strong, feminine activist of color, her grandfather is ex-intelligence, the mysterious VT was a dancer at Julliard who dropped out and says he literally joined the circus.

Honestly, the angst of the main character is a little grating but hey, she's a teenager and not a deal breaker, but the more I read I found myself giving a few eye rolls. I wanted Flora to be a strong character and when she was looking for clues it was easy to root for her.

For YA novels, character development can be tricky and ultimately, these characters were a bit outside the box of believable for me. I was looking forward to an LGBTQ YA book and am a bit disappointed that I wan't enjoying You're Next like I had thought I would at the beginning.

Wow! This was such a great book! I really loved the main character, Flora. She is deeply flawed, but so relatable. I enjoyed the complexities in her relationships with the other characters (though some moments were heart-wrenching!). The story is tightly-plotted and full of action. It's one I'll be thinking about for a long time to come!

I really enjoyed You're Next. It was a fast paced mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. With the way things ended, I am hoping for a sequel.

Loved it! The writing lends itself to quick page turning and I really loved how the MC's key friendship unfolds. Can't wait to read the author's next book.

Flora Calhoun, amateur girl detective in her high school, has a reputation for sticking her nose in everybody’s business. When her ex-girlfriend, Ava, is shot and killed, she doesn’t think it’s a mugging gone wrong and begins investigating. I enjoyed this book so much, and although the plot felt somewhat familiar, the characters, world-building, representation and overall writing made up for it. The world building was excellent and the description of the places in the book made it feel all too real. Flora’s character felt so genuine; Schachte showed how fierce and determined she was, and also all the pain and sadness she was suffering inside too. Flora wasn’t depicted as a perfect teenager; she had plenty of flaws, which I think every good character should have. This wasn’t just any thriller, as there were many important, and unfortunately real, issues raised, such as race and the role it can play in the justice system. I found the characters to be all very diverse, and I really loved how Schachte didn’t mention it over and over again to try and make a point. I did kind of guess the ending (mainly because I know my way around YA thrillers), but I still found it to be exciting. My only problem with the book was the way the book ended. It was sort of a cliffhanger, but also not … Personally, I feel that this ended in a way that there would be a sequel, although there is no news of this yet. I think it could work as a standalone, but the ending does feel cut-off if it is. I definitely recommend this book and I can see myself rereading this book in the future.

If you grew up reading Nancy Drew and watched Veronica Mars, you'll like this book. I wish this existed during my teen years. It's not the perfect book but it was a fun read.

If you are looking for a fast paced, suspenseful mystery/thriller for your young adult, look no farther. Flora is a teenager who feels like she has to be a detective. Because her meddling in one case caused a killer to go free, she wants to help victims now even more. This is well written, maybe a little far fetched but overall a good, tight mystery which reads fast and keeps you engaged.
Thanks to NetGalley, Jimmy Patterson Books and Kylie Schachte for the advanced copy in exchange for a fair review.

This book was excellent. The perfect book for anyone interested in a fast paced mystery/thriller. The characters were fleshed out and a good plot unique. I would definitely recommend!

I enjoyed this novel but I’m giving it 4 stars for two specific reasons. First, the main character, Flora, could not accomplish all that she did as a 16 year old. I realize it is fiction, but it has to be believable. Second, there were references to a first case which made this feel like a sequel. It concerned me that Flora rarely slept, and missed a great deal of school to be a crime fighter. But truly, those things aside, You’re Next was a good novel. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.

It was a great mystery with strong, complex characters - things didn't just wrap up happily ever after either. Which is fine. However, there's a bit of a logic issue with how the big shocker at the end did/when it had time to happen within the timeline. There were a couple of big plot holes - that being one of them (and I can't mention part of why because it'd be a big spoiler about the climax), but there's also the bit at the beginning where the main character decides not to take the car and states her reasoning for why, but then it's never mentioned again. You'd think that would have a HUGE impact on the amount of guilt she was feeling - choosing to ride her bike across town instead of taking the car, and what happened. But it's just not mentioned. So why even mention that she had the option of taking the car? Make up an excuse that she's afraid of driving at night or can't see well or something.
Besides these couple of (big) things, the book is strong and holds well and is a quick read. I think I finished in two days. I would recommend it but these are issues that should have been caught in development.

I absolutely loved this fast-paced and engaging novel. Young readers who are fans of crime fiction will devour this story. Schachte does a phenomenal job of presenting a detective procedural that is grounded in the world and issues of YA readers. The ending is incredible and will have readers begging for more! Highly recommended.

It was a nice try at a young adult thriller, but most parts just were written way to childish for my liking.

the writer kept referring to issues happened in the past, which made me feel like I was reading a sequel and really felt like a big missing part.

It had some nice mystery elements, but those were easy to figure out.

I wanted to sleep with the light on after this one. I read it in one day. I will be adding this to my library and will read again.

This book aggravated me to no end. It was fast paced and it held my attention HARD. BUT, the main character, ugh. And the ending! UGH!

Overall it was extremely well written, but there were just some overly dramatic, unbelievable moments. Also, I kept feeling like I was missing something, like this was the second in a series and I had somehow missed the first book.

Fast paced, fun read!

Flora Calhoun is a high school detective. The police are not always happy to hear from her or find her at crime scenes. When a close friend of hers is murdered she sets out to get justice. This book kept me guessing and had several twists and turns I did not see coming. Some of the situations are not realistic for 16-17 year olds, but overall I really enjoyed this book.
