I’d like to thank Joffe Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘He Knows Your Secrets’ by Charlie Gallagher in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

DS Maddie Ives is called out to investigate a taxi that’s been driven over a cliff top in a well-known beauty spot. She recovers a yellow duffle bag containing various seemingly unimportant items but as she examines these items she soon connects them with the criminal activities of the powerful Freddie Rickman who blackmails vulnerable women into prostitution. With the agreement of her boss DI Harry Blaker, Maddie continues digging and doesn’t stop until she has enough information to bring Rickman in for questioning. But can she get anybody to testify against him?

‘He Knows Your secrets’, is the fourth in the DS Maddie Ives series and is a gritty thriller with an action-packed plot, drama and suspense, twists and turns, and an exciting conclusion. I like how the characters work together, Maddie who feels deeply enough to go out on a limb despite her boss’s reservations, Harry Blaker who does have a sense of humour although it only appears briefly, and PC Vince Arnold ‘Big Vince’ who’s tough but has a heart of gold. This is a thriller that’s horrifying at times yet nonetheless makes enjoyable reading, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
Holly, in a taxi with her unsuspecting driver, forces the plunging of the vehicle over a steep cliff, killing them both. She's clutching a backpack filled with evidence, hoping the finding of the contents will bring down and put away her powerful, psychopathic crime boss and set her partner, Kelly, free from the terrifying hold the boss has over her.
Detective Maddie Ives is determined to solve this case, instinctively knowing who is behind this suicide; a man who has never been convicted of a crime, but is behind drug deals and the running of young girls for computer sex shows. It's a tough job, made more so by the fact her boss is unconvinced.
I had mixed feelings about this book, the violence was depressing and I couldn't connect with any of the characters. It all seemed a bit over the top, even though I'm sure it's a realistic glimpse of the underbelly of the crime world. It's not the type of story I could relax with and enjoy, but it's well written and will be enjoyed by readers who like dark mysteries. Two and half stars.
