A warming story, nicely told and shown to us with good illustrations, of an elderly man, his tomatoes, and his 'pay it forward' attitude. Its message is as welcome as any, and the portrayal of the young girl learning about what the man is really growing is a strong one.

ARC Copy...Even though the plants in Larry's garden shows signs of being of the fantastic varieties, the themes and methods about gardening and community are real. Ex. marigolds are planted as an anti-pest flower in gardens.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This is acute book about friendship, the environment, eating fresh and local produce and kindness.
A little girl and her elderly neighbour work together to achieve all this.
This book is a lovely story but it ended quite abruptly and I did feel it could have ended better.

This was a very well written book. I loved exploring the garden with the characters. I would say that it might be for a bit older children just because of the length of the story.

A book based on a real man named Larry who grows beautiful things in his urban garden. The story was sweet. I loved the idea that all things need water, sunlight and nurturing to grow. Whether it be a plant or a child or a friendship. This is a wonderful idea, to grow vegetables and share them with people. It gives a sense of acknowledgement, as well as encouragement to share our feelings with others.

In this amazing picture book, the true story of Larry, a teacher, is told in simple words and pictures.

Larry has seen what a plant can do for a child. For a child, raising a plant is more than just the plant. It is also the community that it builds. In this case, Larry teaches the students to grow the plant from seed, and then give it away, and write a letter explaining why the pant was being given to the person chosen.

That in itself makes a wonderful picture book, but then the author threw in a bit about the next door neighbor building a fence, and them working with their neighbor to alleviate the issue of it blocking the light.

It seemed almost to be in there to "make good", like adding an extra tomato to the bag to make an even pound.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This is a nice little book, based on a real person, about gardening, kindness, and community.

I'm not sure about the storyline involving the neighbour and his fence (it looks like that part was made up); focusing on Larry and his tomato project could've been enough. To me, it just seemed like the neighbour came around awfully fast, and it added an unrealistic element to the plot.

The overall message is nice, though, and Larry's tomato project is kind of cool. We need more teachers like this.
