OᐯᗴᖇᐯIᗴᗯ: This story follows Mallory as she returns to the hometown she left behind to visit her ailing father. While there, she is dragged back into the scandal that broke her family apart many years ago. With her sisters, her daughter Joy, and her ex-boyfriend, Jack, she discovers what really happened that night so many years ago and begins to heal her family and herself.

ᗰY TᕼOᑌᘜᕼTᔕ: Barbara Delinsky really delivers on family drama. This novel was a slow build, almost too slow, as the characters developed and the mystery and scandal were not as explosive as I was hoping. However, the relationships Mallory has with her father, her daughter, her sisters, and Jack are all uniquely different and well-developed. So if you're looking for a book that is more about family than about the scandal, this book is for you!

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

As a New Englander, I loved the Rhode Island setting in Barbara Delinsky's A Week at the Shore. As always, Delinsky's writing is beautiful. This is another engaging family saga that reads a bit like a mystery. It was an emotional poignant journey for sure.

I have not read Barbara Delinsky in awhile, which was a mistake as she writes compelling family dramas with a touch of romance. The characters feel real and complicated, with problems and conflicts worth exploring. I thoroughly enjoyed this women's fiction novel.

I have read many of Barbara Delinsky’s books, but this one is never going to at the top of my list. After a disturbing phone call from her neighbor and family friend, Mallory Aldiss and her 13-year old daughter return to Mallory’s home in Rhode Island. It has been twenty years since Mallory left her estranged family, but she wants to find answers to questions that have lingered for the ensuing years. Mallory’s father, Tom, is a retired judge and has early stage Alzheimer's disease, and Mallory wants to check on him and hopefully finally unlock the secrets he has stored within. Once back home, Mallory must confront the demon secrets in her past, from the day her neighbor disappeared when out with Tom in his boat, to her parents’ divorce and her mother’s move away, to how each of the three daughters handled the ensuing scandal and break-up of their family. Each daughter has handled things differently, and now must somehow come together to reconcile events, reactions, and thoughts/memories. In one short week, things will come to ahead, as events play out, not always as everyone wants them to, but they will play out, nevertheless.

This is a book unlike what I remember the author’s books to be. It moved along way too slowly for me. There was a lot of introspection, which bored me almost to death. I never did get a good handle on Mallory or her two sisters or her father, for that matter. The neighbor, Jack, once a love of Mallory’s, likewise did not come across as very likeable to me. Mallory’s daughter Joy was a sharp, precocious 13-year old, not really involved in all the angst that was going on around her, just enjoying getting to know her mother’s family and hometown. However, she came across as the one running things for her and her mother, rather than the other way around, as it should be. The book was a long-winded look at this family. It provided some insight about the events and repercussions that broke the family up, but it took forever to do that. This is not ever going to be one of my favorite Barbara Delinsky books, as I said. However, it was an okay read, just not a really good one. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.

A Week at The Shore
Barbara Delinsky
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was quickly swept up in A week at the Shore. A tragic accident happened twenty years ago and it broke up the Aldiss family. Mallory receives an alarming call about her father’s health. Mallory and her thirteen year old daughter Joy head to the beach for a week. The family will reunite at their childhood home in Rhode Island on the beach. This emotional storyline follows three sisters all holding secrets but finally coming together for closure. This book has it all heartbreak, suspense, romance, forgiveness and letting go. This was a wonderful beach read as we approach summer! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s press for providing me an early edition of A Week at the Shore for an honest review.

Barbara Delinsky delivers a big meaty beach read just in time for summer holiday kick off, Memorial Day. Two families, 3 sisters, relationships and marriages, broken, and one mysterious death. Can one week at the shore mend fences, heal relationships, and provide answers? I loved the character of Mallory and her daughter Joy (who is a joy)! I really like the character of Jack and the character development of all were so good! I wish the mystery had more resolution but maybe some things are meant to be a mystery? Overall, I really enjoyed this book by the iconic Delinsky!

A classic beach read with lots of family drama. A bit too slow for me but I think i'm not the right audience for this book. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for my early copy!

What a great book! I was brought right in with these characters. I felt their pain and their joy. We’ve probably all had that feeling that we just didn’t quite belong. How awful it must have been to have to “pick a parent”. Unfortunately, divorce does that to kids. So unfair that that can pull family’s apart. I think you’ll enjoy reading how these three sisters, Margo, Mallory and Anne handle the ups and downs of their lives. I loved the way this story read. The characters are great and I was right there with them, for the good and the bad. There were a couple of surprises that I was not expecting, but that just made it all the more interesting. I hope you enjoy it also. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.

Estranged sisters and a family scandal that tore the family apart on the shores of Rhode Island – sign me up. Delisnky writes such intricate characters that accurately capture the situations in her novels perfectly. I thought the dynamic between the three sisters in this novel was perfectly complicated. Each had their reasoning for what they thought was right, and I liked getting to see this pan out in this novel.

There is also a great mother-daughter relationship in this book that explores how great and confusing these relationships can be at times. I loved Joy and found her name so fitting. She was the perfect balance of joy with hardship in this book, and she may have been my favorite character.

A Week at the Shore by Barbara Delinsky is a sweet book about coming home, where Mallory Aldiss hasn't been for twenty years. Mal's thirteen-year-old daughter, Joy, is excited to see where her mother grew up and meet her grandfather. Beautiful story about family, romance, and the ocean. Well written, with wonderful characters. I highly recommend this book, if your a sucker for ocean stories. I will be reading more book by Ms. Delinsky.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A week at the beach by Barbara Delinsky is a perfect summer read! Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for giving me an advanced copy to read. Three sisters reunite at their family Rhode Island beach home and have to deal with not only their relationships, but a 20 year scandal that destroyed their parents marriage, and ruined one’s sister first love. This was another great book to read. I was able to quickly get into the story, enjoyed the characters of Mallory and her daughter Joy (I really liked their relationship). The character of their father was very real. The beginnings of Alzheimer’s was perfectly described, the easy way people can hide the forgetfulness from those around them, the tricks they used to keep people noticing their secret. The book focuses mainly on the middle sister Mallory, and her relationship with Jack, her first love. 3 ½ stars!

They finally all come back together when dad gets alzheimers disease & that coming together in a family emergency is what finally brings the sisters back together to mend relationships and hearts after a 20 yr estrangement. It has been awhile since I have read Barbara Delinsky's works, but I remember them being mystical. This book has no mysticism in it. The title is deceptive, in that it sounds like a fun summer beach read, but it is not. Single mother Mallory and her teen Joy return to Mallory's hometown, a Rhode Island beach village, after a 20-year absence. Family drama on steroids fills this tale of a questionable death, failed romance, hidden affairs, personal secrets, and sibling conflicts. There is little action but lots of internal monologues that slow the story considerably. I found Mallory to be somewhat frustrating in her constant whining and indecisiveness. Thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC.

At first glance A Week at the Shore may appear to be a beach read, but this book is so much more. Any reader should be able to find some aspect to relate to in this family-centered novel. How many times do we discover that our perception of a sibling or parent has been wrong? Even a good friend's life may not be as picture-perfect as portrayed on social media. I was totally engaged in this contemporary novel from a long-time favorite author. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

An unexpected phone call from Jack, a neighbor in her hometown of Bay Bluff, Rhode Island brings photographer Mallory Aldiss and her daughter Joy home for the first time in years. In fact, Joy has never met her grandfather, her aunt Anne who takes care go him and lives far away from her mother’s other sister Margo. A long ago tragedy split this family apart. Mallory agrees to go home for a week to check on her father. This begins an engrossing novel about broken families and relationships and the reconciliations needed to fix them.

Tom, Mallory’s father, and neighbor Elizabeth Sabathian, Jack’s mother, went boating in a storm twenty years ago. Only Tom returned. What happened to Elizabeth is a mystery. Did she drown, commit suicide or did Tom kill her? And why has Tom always preferred his other two daughters to Mallory? Her parents’ divorce following the boating tragedy only solidified the family conflicts. And when Mallory moved away, she left her boyfriend Jack behind. Now, in this one week, she and Jack work to uncover long buried family secrets.

A Week at the Shore is a 5 star read. Barbara Delinsky never disappoints. Her characters are always people you think you’ve met and her complex plots provide many surprises.

Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Barbara Delinsky for this ARC.

Dysfunctional family with secrets

I enjoy Barbara Delinsky's novels and was pleased to read her latest, "A Week at the Shore". She certainly has not lost her deft touch with characters and a bit of mystery. Three sisters reunite as their father is failing mentally, each with their own problems, brought up in the same family but each with a different reaction to the dynamics. So many secrets, hopefully, some will be shared. Perhaps the pace is a bit slow, but to my mind, this adds to the sense of angst. I really enjoyed reading this book, isn't it interesting how we all like to examine the lives of others. A satisfying ending completes the reading experience. You will enjoy this book!

Thank you to the publisher who supplied a time-constrained e-arc via Netgalley. This review is optional and is my own opinion.
