Barbara Delinsky has always been one of my favorite mystery /romance authors. I think her characters are more believable, real. They are not your beauty queens or hunks but real people. They are us. To start, my favorite setting, the beach. The book cover was perfect. You can just feel the sand between your toes. The storyline is not really new , Mallory and her daughter Joy return home after a long absence after receiving a distressing call from her father 's neighbor Jack, her ex. Mallory grew up at the beach with her sisters. Anne has stayed and taken care of their father who is suffering from dementia and Margo, the eldest, also had left after a fight with her father. Jack was part of the reason Mallory left.. There is more to tell , the mystery of the disappearance of Jack's mother, Elizabeth many years ago which was the cause of the rift in the family. You will just have to purchase the book to find out he answers.
I really enjoyed this book A definite 5 star read.

A little slow but I loved the writing in coming home to a shore town. A little mystery, a little love story, a little love story of memory and ocean. Good summer read.

Thanks to Netgalley for the free read in exchange for an honest review

"Every memory is real, but not all are based on fact."

I've read a lot of books by author Delinsky in the past and enjoyed them. It makes me wonder why it's been awhile since I read the last one.

This book is a shining example of her work. She is a master at drawing characters on the page so they come alive for the reader - with all their strengths and weaknesses.

Mallory Aldriss is the middle child of three sisters, the peacekeeper. She lives in New York City with her 13 year-old daughter, Joy, and does not go back to the Rhode Island shore house where her father and youngest sister still live. This is the father who always treated her differently, as in poorly, as compared to her sisters.

She receives a call from an old neighbor who she has never forgotten with concerns about her father and decides to take her daughter to meet the grandfather she's never met.

This is a twisted tale of families and secrets and long-held hurt and also love and forgiveness. I loved the characters, none of whom are perfect, and I loved the shore setting.

I heartily recommend this book to all of us from the not-so-perfect families.

I received this book from St. Martin's Press through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.

Another wonderful book by Barbara Delinski. This is a heartfelt story about family. Mother’s, sisters, dads.
“Memory is life experience. When we deny it, there’s a hole where it should be.” (My favorite sentence in this book.

This is the story of three sisters. Each one so very different, yet a lot alike also. After a tragic accident two move away. One stays. Mallory, Annie and Margo. This book is more about Mallory than the other two but it takes all three to make the story work. Mallory has a daughter, Joy, who is the center of her life. When she left the Shore she left behind the love of her life, Jack. Jack has never got over her nor has she him. She will go through some pretty deep things to realize what he means to her and what part he will ultimately play in her and Joy’s life. Mallory wanted a child and she chose to have one totally on her own and to raise her on her own. Joy is a great kid. Very smart for her thirteen years and wants more family so bad.

When Mallory decides to go back home for a visit Joy is delighted. She wants to get to know her aunts better and her grandfather. Mallory’s sister, Anne, has been taking care of their dad since their parents divorced twenty years prior. Tom, their dad, has dementia and depends on Anne for so much. She has always stuck by him and felt that her sisters sided with their mom. In reality it was not siding. It was more of an escape from a tragedy that happened all those years earlier. Each going their separate way to build a life. When they get back together it is up and down for sure. They each have a lot of pain to deal with and many questions. But their dad can’t give them the answers they do desperately want. He doesn’t remember much but when he does have good days he tries. He was a very strong man before this. A lawyer then a judge. He was a very strong and strict dad to them, especially Mallory it seems.

This book is filled with so many emotions. From the laughter shared by the sisters and niece to the tears each sheds. From the happy memories to the sad times. Each daughter has so much going on and questions why they are the way they are. Whether they are good enough or strong enough. They fight just like always and make up too. They love each other unconditionally yet put pressure on each other too. There is a lot of love in this family and a lot of unanswered questions. A love that is endless between three sisters and a niece. A love between a man and woman that will make you root for it to prevail.

A tragedy hits them and brings out lots of anger and questions. Can these three sisters work though this? Will they be able to move on and have lives? Will the bond they once shared be strong enough? This is a very sweet book that will keep you turning pages. It will keep you rooting for love to the very last page. The very last word.

Thank you #NetGalley, #StMartin’sPress, #BarbaraDelinsky for this ARC. This is my own review.

I gave it 5 stars and loved it. A high recommendation from me.

In A WEEK AT THE SHORE, Barbara Delinsky tells the story of Mallory Aldiss, middle daughter in family of three very different women. When former best friend and lover Jack Sabathian calls to demand the long-gone Mal step in and deal with her obstreperous, troubled father, Mal commits to a week back at the house where she grew up in coastal Rhode Island. One day in, her week is far more treacherous, rewarding, and challenging than she ever could have imagined with long-buried secrets erupting everywhere she turns. While her daughter basks in the family home she's never known, Mal struggles to find her footing in a place that demands she be who she's always been. Once again, the talented Delinsky tells a totally engrossing story with complex individuals, lush and sensually vibrant settings, and logical and yet surprising plot twists. It is that rare and fantastic read that will keep you up way past bedtime, wanting to read just a little further in a story that you never want to end. My gratitude to Ms. Delinsky for transporting this delighted reader yet again -- and to the publisher and Netgalley for an early reader copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

Thanks you Net Galley for providing me with an advance copy of A Week at the Shore. This is the story of 3 sisters who meet at the family home to see about their father's health issues.. For two of them it's the first time they have been there in years, the third sister lives there. Though they gotten together before. It has strong unpleasant memories for the other two. Overall, I like the book, but found the sisters annoying. There were a few surprises, but the "main mystery' was still a mystery. While it was assumed to have been figured out, I really didn't feel it was.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I have read many of Barbara's books and this one just seemed to move more slowly than most of her books. The writing was vapid and the characters had "no starch". A book about family drama can be so much more enthusiastically written. I'm sure there are others who will love this book so don't just take my word on the writing. Enjoy! 📚

A Week at the Shore is a strong family drama story by Barbara Delinsky. It has taken twenty years for the sisters to finally be back together in their childhood Rhode Island beach home. The adverse experiences from the past has come back to again change them all.

The plot of this reunion moves slowly after the initial phone call that pushes this return home for photographer Mallory Aldiss but then that is fitting with the twenty years that everything has been pushed under the rug. The characters are still held by the past. It must be painful explored and understood. As Mallory, her sisters and neighbor Jack do that it is not always pleasant. Jack especially can be abrasive but then his family was at the heart of the experience too.

What stood out to me was the fight or flight approach the characters took. Not heroic but so true to human nature. The dialogue is also so honest even when the speaker was not being totally. Perspective influences memory and memory influences perspective. Mallory’s daughter, 13 year-old Joy, perceptions important since none of them were tainted by memories of the past. A deep story of how the past can be such a hinder in relationships and of coping when events are unsolved, then when they are..

An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mallory’s daughter, Joy, is anxious to meet the grandfather she has never really had a chance to bond with. Joy also wants to experience life in the Rhode Island beach town where her mother grew up. Mallory isn’t anxious to return. She is basically estranged from her father. Her relationship with her sisters isn’t much better. The youngest sister, Anne, has stayed in town and to care for their father. Mallory escaped to New York and Margo, the oldest sister, moved to Chicago with their mother when she finally left. Jack, the high school boyfriend still lives next door. Their families were once extremely close – maybe too close -- until a tragic incident when Jack’s mother disappeared while boating with Mallory’s father.
Mallory agrees to one week. She hopes to use the week to discover what really happened on that boat but her father is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He has lucid moments but they can be few and far between. Jack wants answers to the disappearance too but he also wants Mallory. All three sisters end up in town and things quickly come to a head.
A Week at the Shore is a good read. It keeps you engaged without being predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I didn't want to wait long to review this book after reading because I didn't want to forget even one part of it! As I read, I felt like I was reading a story about my family albeit without guns. Ms. Delinsky managed to probe current family life with all its joys and sorrows with amazing accuracy

The story centers around Mallory who has not been home to Rhode Island in 20 years. She's now a single mother with a teenage daughter. But she hasn't left the resentments, anger and questions behind. They still trouble her. She takes one week off to go home and try to compensate for all the missing years to help her sister.

Barbara Delinsky is an amazing author with insight into families and human emotion. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.

This is the first Barbara Delinsky I've read in ages. I always enjoyed her earlier books but they started to get more suspense oriented than family-romance. This seems to be heading back to the style of book I enjoy reading. Mallory and her 13 year old daughter Joy are heading back too her Rhode Island childhood home. She's allotted a week to visit her sick father and reunited with her two sisters. There is a thread of suspense as the three investigate their past to see how each remembers their mother and father and the disappearance of a neighbor. Slow to get started but moves faster once the characters are all introduced. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Barbara Delinsky is clearly a gifted storyteller. She has mastered her craft and it shows in the stories she creates. Her writing is so detailed and picturesque, you feel as if you’ve been dropped right into the small beach town itself. Not only can you see every detail, but you can smell the salty brine in the air and feel the warm, balmy breeze on your skin.

A Week at the Shore is a story of family, flaws, heartaches, dysfunctions and all. It covers the gamut, including a long ago mystery that scarred two families and altered the course of their lives, a second chance romance, sibling connections and interactions, a sweet mother-daughter relationship and attempts to make peace with the past and move forward.

I do believe the story would have benefited from being more condensed to keep the reader’s interest. It’s a long story, and though engaging, it felt long. But, it a was moving, thought-provoking and well told, enjoyable story.

I have read a few Barbara Delinsky books over the years, but not for awhile. This one really held my interest. A good, complicated family saga with lots of secrets, a few twists and complex relationships. All takes place during one week at the family beach house in Rhode Island. I found it quite entertaining and not just a fluffy beach read.

A Week at the Shore is the second book I’ve read from Delinsky and I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It is filled with a lot of story that takes place in just a short amount of time but certainly packs an emotional punch. Mallory Aldiss left her home in Rhode Island 20 years ago after her family fell apart. It hold painful memories for her but she heads home after the dreadful call from her first love Jack (Who Mallory has unresolved feelings for) that’s about her father and his failing health.

The Aldiss family has lots of secrets between them. The three sisters keep things from each other, the parents have kept things from their children and the biggest of all is what happened to Jack’s mother all those years ago when she went missing. Speculation as to Mallory’s fathers role in the disappearance is the biggest and basically tore their family apart. There a lot of truths that come to light on all fronts in this family. Needless to say, there is plenty of drama but it also showed the strength of family, sisterhood and even forgiveness. Plus, a little bit of romance along the way and it all made for such a great read!

I regret that I have to mark this book as "Did Not Finish". I've previously read Barbara Delinsky's books, and enjoyed them. This, however, could not grab my attention. I'm so sorry. Perhaps it is the terrible times we are facing, but I really wanted to get back into her books.
Thanks for allowing me the chance to read A Week At The Shore.

Barbara Delinsky writes family drama very, very well. And she incorporates timely issues into the family drama. In A Week at the Shore, Mallory returns to her family home in Bay Bluff, Rhode Island after a 20 year absence. She left after a three-week long argument with her first love, Jack Sabathian, after a tragic accident involving his mother and her father. Mallory now has a 13 year old daughter, Joy, who she conceived using a sperm donor. Joy is craving family. She convinces Mallory to go home to visit her ailing father and younger sister, Anne, for a weekend. Mallory stretches it to a week. During the course of that week, older sister Margo shows up, the love affair between Jack and Mallory is reignited, and family secrets are revealed.
When I started the book, I had some hesitancy because there are three sisters involved. I love a family drama, but the three sisters storyline sometimes is a lot for me to take, especially if they are all filled with a lot of emotional drama. I loved how Ms. Delinsky handled this family dynamic. This is Mallory’s story, Anne and Margo are supporting players. Yes, Anne has a storyline but it takes her out of the picture quite a bit. We see her and Mallory interact, but those instances are to propel Mallory’s story. Now, I won’t reveal everything, but there is a reason Ms. Delinsky has separated Mallory and the other two and that brings another element to the story.
My jaw dropped multiple times. I squeaked, I squealed. I loved this story and all the characters. And yes, there is a pitbull, Gus, who I also loved! If you like family drama with a little romance and a little mystery, pick up A Week at the Shore.

A Week at the Shore, Barbara Delinsky's latest release, whisks you away to the New England coast where the scenery is picturesque and the family dynamics are anything but. Mallory is a successful real estate photographer raising her daughter in NYC when a call from the past threatens her carefully crafted safe haven. She hasn't returned to the Rhode Island shore town in 20 years since a devastating incident split the family. Returning home with her daughter in tow Mallory confronts the ghosts of her past-and her sisters-in order to move forward.

A charming, scenic, family saga will thrill many of Delinsky's readers. Additional characters, including a feisty dog, add color to the story as Mallory and her sisters navigate their father's failing health, past hurts and secrets.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
