This story started of with a big bang, grabbed me at the first page. Im not a fan of slow burners so that was good. It kept me on my toes trying to piece together what was going on. It has a past/present theme. Which I also like. It had me guessing right to the very end.

With two story lines and a prologue that sends you back in time, this book was a bit hard to read and follow. The Other Gloria starts with a Gloria who finds herself in a car covered with blood, but can't find the source, but then she is sent back in time to a time where she had two young daughters and was in a horrible marriage. The other storyline is a few years back and Gloria has left the marriage with adult daughters and has found a new love.

The storylines were hard to follow, but the big for me for this book was I didn't understand how they were going to collide and to be frank I have finished the book a few days ago and have thought of it and still don't feel as though I got it all and that for me is frustrating as a reader. The sad thing is I am not sure if I read it again, that I would pick up anything and get it any more than I do now.

I did finish the book because I did enjoy Gloria the character and her daughters. The author did create a character that I cared about and wanted to know more about, so that lead me to keep reading even with the confusing storylines and plot lines.

I would read another by this author, but would be real critical about the synopsis. The building of great characters gives me enough to want to try this author again, but with a little reservation.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.

Man, this book got me in the feels. The story-line here is SO unique. The summary caught my interest immediately, and once I started reading this book, I truly couldn't put it down.

The book starts off in 2019 with Gloria, the main character, finds herself behind the wheel of her car.. beaten and unable to remember what's went on. She pulls over and loses consciousness. When she wakes/comes to, it's suddenly 2003, and she's in bed with her abusive ex Charlie. I'm sure you're thinking, wait what.. how in the world?! and that's exactly what you should be wondering.

it appears that Gloria suffers from D.I.D from the abuse she endures. She views this as a "do-over" opportunity. The chance to get it right this time around. And will she? Will she escape the abuse in time?

This book was an expected treat. Going into it I was a bit confused with the timelines but once I got into the swing of things the story flowed smoothly.

Gloria wakes up beaten and covered in blood in 2019. And then...she is in 2003 reliving her life with her abusive husband. The Other Gloria takes over to get her through these things and in the process shows her what secrets she holds. The jumping back from past to present keeps you engaged and right when you think you know something, you don't.

Well worth a read this year.

The plotline in the summary drew me in immediately!

An excellent read. Although Gloria goes back and forth from 2017 to 2003 a number of times, LA Villafane manages to keep the story clear and concise. The reader wants to know what happened to Gloria on the road "that night". And the possibilities continue to grow.

Gloria's ex-husband, Charles, is portrayed very well - yet he is a character you really hate. I wondered how she didn't try to leave him even sooner. Yet, married at 17, Gloria was not quite able/ready to be left alone. - especially when she had two daughters.

As the story continues, there are many twists as the reader (and Gloria) continue to wonder how the time switches are able to take place. Does she have a second chance at life? More importantly - why?

Superb.

Many Thanks to Empire Publishing and NetGalley for a rollercoaster ride!

Absolutely enjoyed this novel by an extremely talented writer. She weaves a twisted net and the reader immediately gets wrapped up in it. Can’t recommend it enough

This is my review of the incredibly beautiful novel, The Other Gloria by L.A. Villafane. Following on from a very chilling first chapter, being introduced to Gloria was reminiscent of an out of body experience. She enimates the aura of a ghost trying to find her way into the afterlife. Its chilling, eerie and claustrophobic. It set the tone for the entirety of the novel, there was an undercurrent of fear and worry, it was addictive, and it left me with palpitations. The things Gloria had to endure broke me. It felt akin to reading about the pain a close friend was going through. It kept me on my toes and chilled me to the bone.

The Other Gloria was the haunting realisation that trauma can kick the brain into self-preservation mode. Its own way of protecting the body and mind from more harm, it’s the only way to keep on surviving and its harrowing. The book was beautiful and ugly at the same time, I felt like I was looking down onto the situation. The authors use of language really added a realism element that was natural, not forced. It hurt to see just how much pain Gloria was in, it felt like a fist to the heart.

Gloria and Charles their relationship was toxic. Gloria was walking on literal eggshells trying to keep that man happy. Trying to diffuse the impending explosion daily. Trying to protect her daughters from psychological harm. At the end of the day though, nothing she could do would change him. They were different people, with different idealisations of what love was and they were on different paths. Gloria had my full support, but Charles was a character I loathed from the start. He had no sympathy from me and I was hoping he was going to meet a deserving end.

The storyline was one that did nothing to keep my eyes dry. With every turn of the page, my eyes threatened to leak, my heart hammered harder and I gripped my kindle with all my strength. Why would you treat another human being in such a way? Your significant other isn’t there just for your amusement. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. There is nothing more precious than love, don’t abuse it. Just how much had Gloria endured to the extent that she had lost good and bad memories? What on earth happened? The journey we travelled on to find out was bumpy, but well worth the ride.

Her journey of self-discovery is full of suspicion, a redo of the bad times and discovering what true love means warmed my heart. Too many times I wanted to punch Charles myself, I was enraged and frustrated. He needed a good takedown and I was more than happy to offer myself for the service.

The author tackled the theme of domestic abuse very tactfully and in a realistic fashion. People often ask, “why don’t you just leave them?” Well this book highlights just why, whether it be coupled with financial abuse, using children as a pawn or just pure fear. This is why people get stuck. The author has brought necessary awareness to the problem.

Cancel everything and read The Other Gloria. This book just pulsates with originality. Fast paced and intelligent. A masterful, twisty novel.

*Thank you Net Galley for providing me a copy of this book to read and review**

The story pulls your in right way because it starts with Gloria in a car covered with blood with no memory of what happened. She suffers from Dissociative Disorder which makes her lose memories as a result of trauma. Gloria calls on “The Other Gloria” to help her during these times.

The story then jumps back in time to 2003 and Gloria find herself still married to her abusive ex-husband. It seem like she’s being given a do-over because she left her husband in 2017 (the future). Not wanting to relive those years she fights to break way from him. The story timeline goes between 2003 and 2017/18/19 which can be confusing.

I felt the story was hard to follow at times. I read the book really quickly and I wasn’t bored but it wasn’t super exiting either. I appreciate the strong female character who fights to leave an abusive situation and start a new life for herself. I feel like the story had a lot of potential but it fell a little short for me.

I am not willing to give up on this author and look forward to other book by them in the future.

The truth lies in what she can't remember.

On a dark January night in 2019, Gloria finds herself behind the wheel of a car, beaten and covered in blood. She has no idea where she’s coming from, or where she might be headed.

And than finds herself in bed with her ex-husband, Charles .. a man she ran away from 2 years earlier. Charles was disgustingly abusive ... mentally, physically, sexually. She has woken to the year 2003 and living her life all over again with this monster.

In order to cope with her husband her mind takes her away during the abuse and the "other Gloria" takes her place. The 'other' Gloria has continued on with her life. She knows she must do the one thing she never wanted to do – meet the Other Gloria and finally discover the unspeakable secrets she holds.

This is a very complex story .. jumping between two time lines .. the one happening now and the one that has already happened. Jumping back and forth in time keeps your attention riveted to the page.

This is a well written psychological thriller that has twists and turns at every corner. Just when I thought I had it figured out ... Boom ... another of those twists that sent me to an entirely different thought process. My imagination kept trying to see what would happen if a person from the past met the same person in the future. Mind boggling! The ending came as a surprise.

Many thanks to the author / Empire Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of THE OTHER GLORIA. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
