The Adventure with My Blanky "Mylar" by Reverend Peter G. Vu
Like the idea of the story and how it came about. I had made a blanket for my daughter when she was younger and it was different shaped all put together using different colors.
Gave her the imagination she needed to be able to not only write poetry but paint and use colored pencils.
This colorful children's book is about Juan and his Mylar, the name he gives the blanket his mother made for him one Christmas.
Not a lot of colorful pages. Like the names he gives things and how they all rhyme. Quite unique.
Be kind and be the light has special meanings to him and his friends.
Good read.
Received this review copy from Dog Ear Publishing via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

While I loved the idea of this book, the execution was all wrong for me. I felt that Mr. Rico was a bit much for the target audience of this book. My nine year old enjoyed it, but I will admit that I “edited” the “child prison” part out. I feel this plot could have been executed much better with less adult content.

I liked the idea behind this story and the way that it encourages children to help others that have less than them but I didn't think that the story was executed as well as I had hoped. In the story the little boy does not have much and his only present will be a blanket which he names "Mylar" and he uses this to give him confidence to help others - sadly it is only 2 stars from me for this one

I love the impetus for the writing of this story; I wholeheartedly support these sentiments and the desire to educate and promote kindness and restorative actions.
It is a story of a young boy from a poor family who his given a security blanket one Christmas by his Mum which he loves, and she encourages can, not only bring him comfort, but help him to reach out to other children and share the benefits of the gift.
It is a book heavy on text and wanting on illustrations, so it isn't a typical children's book. Children will grow restless sharing the book, although it reads well, and they may enjoy being read this story.
However, the points made are very grown-up and not very simple to a young person's understanding in my opinion. That it is quilt becomes a super-hero cape, a magical carpet and an invisibility cloak brings confusion to the more demanding issues it reports the young boy wants to address.
So, I love the concept but question the medium and delivery of the story. I like the idea of children demonstrating simple acts to bring love, fight injustice through simple friendships and non-judgemental relationships. The writing is interesting, but I question if it really is directed for children. I would like to learn more about the author, his history and motivation. But here an attempt to share simple values has been over-complicated.

This book was about a little bit who received a blanket as a present and uses it to help other children. I think that this book has a solid storyline, however I don't feel it is appropriate for children. The author's note at the beginning made it very clear what the point of the story is and I am just not sure that political matters should be brought to the attention of children this young. The book also is saying that stealing is ok if it's from someone rich and greedy and is benefiting the poor. That's not what kids should be hearing. With all that said, I do think it is a solid storyline and maybe with tweaking can be used for high schoolers.
