When it comes to romantic comedies Andie J. Christopher knows just what to write. NTKG is just as fresh, sexy and fun as her previous book “Not the girl you marry”. Above all, her characters, be they the main ones or the secondary, are ones you want to root for from the first page. A great blend of delicious sexy fun times and emotional connection. How these books aren’t already optioned and being fast tracked for film I have no idea.

I really, really wanted to love this book. I did at first. I really liked the girl humor. I really liked the chemistry between Bridget and Matt. I really liked the alternating POV as well even though at some points I felt like I was reading the same character self reflections multiple times. Overall, I was enjoying it up until Chapter 11 when it all fell apart. The story arc in that chapter isn't given the time and attention it needs to substantially fit with the plot line. It just didn't fit with the personalities I believed the characters to have or fit with the feel of the first half of the book. Maybe it was thrown in for shock value, but the book was moving along nicely without it. And if it had to be included, it needed more reflection, attention, and backstory given to it. However, I still encourage others to give this book a try! Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a sucker for a fake dating trope, and even BIGGER sucker for a boss/employee relationship, which is why it bums me to give this book a lackluster 3 stars.
From the start, it seemed like a version of the proposal (Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds) but I had to force myself to finish it.

Our story starts with our lead, Bridget, who recently broke up with her long time love/boyfriend Chris after he put a down payment on house without talking to her.
Matt is a super rich intern for summer, and immediately lusts after Bridget despite their age difference, which is allegedly somewhere between 4-8 years, but it’s mentioned multiple times. Matt’s ex Naomi cheated on him with his friends, so there’s clearly bad blood there. Fast forward to the end of the summer internship, and dunken escapades in Vegas lead Bridget and Matt to wake up.... married. After discussing the possibility of annulment, they decide instead to have sex, which disqualified that plan. They instead decided to use their fake marriage to get back at their ex’s, Chris & Naomi.
Cue the cliche emotional blackmail from Matt’s mother to try to expedite the divorce, multiple times trying to bully Bridget into signing the papers. (Each time unsuccessfully). Not only is this not enough drama, Matt gets the flu and goes off the grid and misses important wedding stuff. Instead of communication, Bridget immediately assumes he’s ditching her and showing “true colors”, and doesn’t make any extra effort to rectify the situation.
Important questions that are asked every chapter: Is Bridget really after Matt’s money?! (Despite her constantly saying she’s not). Does Matt REALLY love her?? (Despite him saying so). We will never know!!
But don’t worry, they’ll have a MASSIVE fight and sign the divorce papers in the middle of the wedding. All’s fair in love and war.... and these two clearly are in love.... right? They end up getting back together, but the whole book was filled with pointless drama and miscommunication.

I have a pretty high standard for my romance books lately and this one unfortunately missed the mark, even though I was looking forward too it.

I quite enjoyed this book! It definitely gave me Proposal vibes as the intern and the boss started fake dating. The relationship ended turning into more which led into its own set of challenges. While I did enjoy this story, I really wasn't as engaged as I would've liked to be. I'll definitely keep my eye out for more by Andie J. Christopher.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me an ARC for an honest review.

I will read any romance that Berkley publishes because generally speaking I love the content they release. I enjoyed this one more than the first book she published but it wasn't my favorite.

I liked that this explored a relationship between one person whose older and the other younger (there wasn't a big age difference). But overall I didn't like how the characters were written and there were a lot of parts I could've done without, or they were just too long.

Not That Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher was absolutely wonderful.

Her first novel, Not the Girl You Marry, a thinly veiled reverse How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, had me on the struggle bus, but the same cannot be said about her sophomore novel. It was so much better.

At 25% in, I was all in. I was committed. An office romance? Yes! Thank you!

And then it took a surprise left turn into “fake marriage” trope territory, and while not historically my favorite trope—I was here for it!

Quick summary:

Bridget Nolan (sister of Jack from NtGYM) is a strong woman, but a woman who has been hurt—first by her mother who abandoned their family and then by the only man she’d ever dated. Having sworn off men, she channels her energy into defending victims of sexual assault as an assistant state’s attorney.

Matt Kido is a rich kid, practically American royalty, and a law student, interning in Bridget’s office because his previous internship would have put him in daily contact with his cheating ex-girlfriend. He is immediately attracted to Bridget—both to her beauty and her no-bullshit manner. The sexual tension is hot and leaves both of them bothered.

Then at the end of his internship, an impulsive invitation to spend a weekend in Vegas as her “fake date” turns into a real marriage—something neither of them was ready for but also something they’re not entirely sure was a complete mistake.

Bridget and Matt’s chemistry was perfect. Steamy and sweet, and completely consensual—consent, after all, is sexy. The drama got to be a little bit much, but I liked the characters so much I could overlook the more over the top plot points.

I love reading romances because no matter how bad things look or how bleak a situation feels, you know you can count on a happy ending. And Andie didn’t disappoint. I loved their reunion and the beginning of their happily ever after.

I can’t wait for her next book! Sasha’s story maybe? Hopefully involving a certain sexy priest?

A huge thank you to Berkeley Romance and NetGalley for an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this story. I really liked Not the Girl you Marry, but I think I enjoyed this story more. I really like Bridget's family, and I felt like I got to know them a little better in this book. Now I just can't decide if I want to know more about the last Nolan sibling, or Father patrick, or Hannah's best friend.

This was a really boring read. Which is a shame because it has a lot of elements that would have worked for me.

Bridget ends her relationship with a man she's been in love with since she was four years old. At work as a DA she gets a new intern, Matt, who comes from a very rich family and is instantly in lust with her. As soon as he stops being her intern, they go to Las Vegas for the bachelor and bachelorette party for her brother's wedding. Then they get drunk wedded and I find that reading this book is a chore.

The conflict, the characters, and the setting are all dull. I skipped to the ending to find out how it ends and I'm so glad that I did. Even their happily ever after is boring.

I really wanted to love Not that Kind of Guy, but it fell short for me. I liked it, but I struggled with some aspects of it. Not that Kind of Guy could be read as a stand alone, but I think it would make more sense if you'd read the first in the series (Not the Girl you Marry, which I enjoyed more than this one.) That being said, there were some family dynamics that I think I was supposed to remember from the first book that I definitely didn't, which sometimes confused me. Anyway, Bridget Nolan prosecutes sex crimes and is really good at her job. She's still reeling from a breakup with her longterm boyfriend and has sworn off relationships. Then her boss tells her that she is going to have an intern for the summer - Matt Kido, a rich kid with a bad reputation. (Bet you can see where this is going.) One thing I really, really liked about this book is that nothing happens between Bridget and Matt while he works for her. Once he's done with his internship she takes him to Vegas as a fake date for her brother's bachelor party and they get married while drunk. This was such a fun plot, and I loved Matt. He was a fantastic hero, even if he winked way too much. However, I didn't think we saw enough interaction between him and Bridget while they worked together. He keeps telling the reader how much he likes Bridget, but there's no basis for it that we've seen. The book would have been a lot stronger if we saw them in the office (and also if we could see Bridget more often being awesome at her job). Bridget, on the other hand, drove me nuts. She is super fixated on her ex even though they've been broken up for 2 years and she has some weird ideas about what makes the "perfect" wife. I didn't really buy that a busy lawyer would believe some of that stuff. Bridget runs really hot and cold when it comes to Matt. I understood her hesitation, but it got repetitive. The stuff with her ex - who is a family friend - was super repetitive also. I couldn't quite get a handle on his deal, he was pretty inconsistent. Bridget is also super hung up with her family issues - she is really (understandably) bitter that her mom left when she was young, but I kind of wanted to tell her to just get over it. (Maybe that's not fair of me, but she was driving me crazy.) I also was disappointed in some continuity issues, and that a major issue with Bridget's work was never resolved. (In fact, the entire issue of her marriage to Matt is apparently never revealed at work, which felt off.) All that being said, I enjoyed reading this and wanted to know what would happen. I also am interested in reading the next in this series - I'm really hoping it's two of the side characters in this one, Sasha and Patrick.

The characters and their fears felt very real. Though I personally can't understand why anyone would want to spend their bachelor/bachelorette party drunk and broke, I still enjoyed the story.

I liked this book a lot. The characters were very specific and well- drawn. I liked Bridget's south side Chicago Irish background and family contrasted with Matt's wealthy, stuffy Japanese family. Neither felt like a caricature which can be hard to pull off.
The story was cute, and the love story felt believable,. Nothing really happened in the story, which was strangely kind of nice. Everyone acted like real people do, there were no improbable misunderstandings, just 2 people trying to figure out what they mean to each other and hiw to fit each other into their lives.

My favorite part of this book is the cover...super Adorable!!! I did not care for her other book, but figured I would give this one a try. I liked it much better. Bridgett and Matt were great together and their witty banter kept me quite entertained! The supporting side characters like family and friends brought some love and drama into the situation, which I felt was very realistic. This book had romance, a cute dialogue, yet diversity. I will be sure and follow this author and future publications. I recommend reading this even if you did not like Not The Girl You Marry.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of Not That Kind of a Girl, simply because i felt it was too similar to How To Lose a guy in 10 days, in that I knew exactly what was going to happen. I wanted to read this one though because I liked the premise.

This one was modelled after the proposal, following Bridget, Jake’s sister. Bridget is an attorney who doesn’t have time for relationships. However, this stance is tested when she gets a new intern, Matt. The two find it hard to ignore their chemistry, especially on a work trip in Vegas.

I really liked the overall plot. I like how it dealt with some difficult topics (it’s actually a topic I cover in a book I wrote). I also love that author includes diverse characters!

The dialogue is great and witty. I always appreciate banter. But my biggest issue is the same as the last book in that I felt there is a LOT of internal dialogue and telling throughout. To the point where I skipped a good portion of each chapter . I think the writing style just isn’t for me. But either way, I’d still recommend!

I have complex feelings about this book. I loved it but some unnecessary dramatic parts really made me irritated!!!

The facts:

BETTER BOOK: This is definitely so so so much better than “Not the girl you marry” even though I’m a big fan of “How to lose a guy in 10 days” and curly hair of Matthew McConaughey but retelling didn’t work with me. We needed Kate and Matthew on the board!

BETTER CHARACTERS: I loved Bridget, tough, prideful, hard-worker, confidant, successful lawyer, but when it comes to deal with her feelings, she still deals with her mother’s abandonment and parents’ divorce that guides her long term relationship she felt trapped all the time and she finally ended it and of course Matt is charming, sweet, kind, a little immature but at least when it comes to the feelings he was more honest and brave even though he also got hurt and cheated after his first long time relationship.

SIZZLING CHEMISTRY: Their chemistry was compatible, hot, sexy, adorable.

GREAT MASH-UP: The plot was two movies’ mash up: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds’ “Proposal” ( Tight ass, dictatorial boss and loyal assistance’s green card marriage story. Thankfully at out book, there is no deportation risk!) and Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher’s “What happens in Vegas” and of course Friends’ episode that Ross and Rachel got drunk and married in Vegas! (One of my favorite episodes and I loved Jen Aniston’s cat moustache!)

So I stayed in the limbo to decide between three and four stars. There are too many positive elements like great sister and brother relationship and funny thing is Jack and Hannah was better supporting characters than leading ones of a book. I didn’t like their story but at this Jack was amazing, supporting, funny, caring brother and Hannah is batshit crazy, protective sister in law.

But I found the last parts of the books consists too much repeats to create some angsty mood and more nonsense tension. Matt’s mother and ex-girlfriends’ attitudes were full of cliché and ex- douche Chris’ repeating moves to get Bridget back were also boring. And of course big problem and misunderstanding about the couple was also a little unnecessary!

I gave 3.5 points, I was about to round it down but at the end I loved the characters a lot and their story is also sweet, swoony and soft escape for me after reading so much thrillers and it wouldn’t be fair to give this book same stars with the first one because this is so much better. At least we have good background stories and love at first intern meeting kind of sparkles! So let’s round it up to 4 because we don’t easily find good romances and I unfortunately read so many bad ones last year.

Special thanks as always to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing me this sweet, entertaining ARC COPY in exchange my honest review! And let’s say third one is charm because Sasha seems like an interesting, vivid character and I guess we’re gonna read her story sooner.

Not That Kind of Guy by Andi J. Christopher

I really liked the characters in this book. Bridget and Matt were both trying to get over long term relationships with partners who were safe and met their family’s expectations, but gave them no sparks, no tingles. They both wanted to change expectations and perceptions. An expected weekend in Vegas changes everything in a big way.

Romance, great dialog and family drama. I especially enjoyed Bridget and Matt’s “couple thing” of Matt trying to find a term of endearment that Bridget could accept.

Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the ARC

I was so excited to receive this galley after LOVING Not the Girl You Marry, and this follow-up did not disappoint! The chemistry between Bridget and Matt is amazing. I’m obsessed with Andie Christopher’s distinct style of snarky, witty banter and love all of her unique characters! The boss/intern conflict was well done and the perfect balance of steamy to sweet. So looking forward to the next in this series!
