Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sending me a kindle ARC of The Night Swim in exchange for an honest review.
This one had me hooked right from the beginning - the 5 minutes late getting to work kind of hooked! This book is the first one of hers that I've read and I'll definitely look into the others now!
In THE NIGHT SWIM, out 8/4/20, a podcast host named Rachel is covering a controversial trial in a small town where the town’s golden boy is accused of a brutal crime. In the midst of her investigation, she finds herself drawn to a different crime that took place 20 years ago, with shocking similarities. As she digs deeper into the connections, Rachel uncovers a world of danger...one that will have repercussions for generations to come...

Rachel Krall is in small coastal Neapolis, North Carolina for her popular crime podcast. This season she is covering the widely publicized rape trial of a well known star athlete and a sixteen year old girl. While in town she also stumbles upon a death that took place 20 years before in the same small town. I loved the dual story lines. The courtroom drama was tense and gripping and the mystery of Jenny Stills death was heart wrenching. I could not put this book down. Totally engrossing read.
Thank you to St Martins Press and NetGalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.

Rachel is a podcast host covering a rape trial. While covering the trial Rachel receives mysterious notes and letters begging her to help uncover a murder that happened years before in the same town. This is a great thriller that emotionally tells the story of 2 rapes and how the victims of these crimes are treated by others.

This thriller will be hard to forget! I loved whole podcast aspect of this story. Readers will find themselves on an emotional rollercoaster as facts continue to be revealed. This is not an easy read but worthwhile. It's told in a very realistic way that will make readers feel apart of the story. I also love that the truth about Jenny was not easy to figure out. Highly recommended!

I loved it!!!
This was a great story about a social media reporter covering a rape trial in a small town. Very Brock Turner ish...of course with darker secrets. The story is heartbreaking but then there is a second story. A local story 25 years old, a heartbreaking rape and murder of a young girl.
This book is brilliant. I loved every second of it. The balance between stories was perfection.
Best book of quarantine.
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

⚠️ The main topic: rape, sexual assault and physical abuse⠀

⠀
Thank you @megangoldinauthor @stmartinspress and @Goodreads for the advance copy of The Night Swim.⠀
⠀
The Night Swim was such an engaging book and it kept my attention from the beginning to the end. First books by Goldin and most certainly will not the last. Ladies and gentlemen, not only does it have one mystery to solve but TWO!!! 😱⠀
⠀
What I liked:⠀
- Character driver; I really enjoyed getting to know both of the main characters (Rachel & Hannah)⠀
- I love being in the courtroom for the trial⠀
- This is the first book I’ve read where a podcast is intertwined with the story⠀
- The pace of the book was not to slow or to fast⠀
- When I thought I knew what going to happen nope I was wrong. It’s been a while since a book kept me guessing. ⠀
- Even though, the topic of the story was heavy, Megan's execution was perfect. ⠀

This one was a heavy read, but I finished in two days, it was that good. ⠀
⠀
Plot: Rachel has become a celebrity due to her true crime podcast. As she’s covering a devastating rape trial in a small North Carolina town, she begins to receive mysterious letters begging for her help in uncovering the truth of a mysterious death 20 years earlier. ⠀
⠀
Can she successfully capture the essence of the trial for her listeners? Can she shed light on the decades old murder? Are the two related?⠀
⠀
Goldin writes a gripping story of a small town’s dark past with characters you will love and hate. ⠀
⠀
This is a must read for Law & Order: SVU fans. ⠀

Ms. Goldin pulled me straight in for a swim with the mystery surrounding the supposed suicide of a teenage girl named Jenny. The alternating chapters kept me up all night as I yearned for the story of Hannah, Jenny’s younger sister, who was there the night Jenny died. I couldn’t stop reading this book.

4.5 stars rounded up. This book was so good that I couldn't put it down. I wanted to find out what happened!
This is the story of true-crime podcast host Rachel, who is on her third season of her podcast. Rachel decides for her latest season to report on a current trial, a trial about an alleged rape in a small town. While she is in the small town, she receives a letter from Hannah, a girl who's sister was killed 25 years ago. Hannah wants to find out the truth about what happened to her sister and thinks Rachel can help. I found more invested in finding out what happened to Hannah's sister so I enjoyed how there were two crimes unfolding at once.
I loved how the story was told third-person for Rachel's chapters but first person on Hannah's and then a third perspective from the podcast. This book reminded me so much of the Brock Turner trial because I have just read the book Know My Name so it was sort of interesting to read a fiction book that is very similar to the non-fiction book (although the non-fiction memoir from Brock Turner's victim was so powerful). I felt this book was an important read and one line really struck me how everyone agrees that murder is bad but when someone is raped, people are torn on it (the author put it much more eloquently and I wish I had highlighted the quote).
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my opinions.

Night Swim by Megan Goldin examines two crimes, present and past that occurred in Neapolis, a small coastal town where the citizens are galvanized in their support of a local boy, destined for Olympic greatness. Rachel, a podcast journalist drives out to cover the trial to investigate the boy's innocence. As she delves into the trial, she is followed by a mysterious person who is leaving notes, asking to meet to discuss the murder of her sister which took place in the town a long time ago. The incident was determined to be an accidental drowning. The author takes us through the trauma caused by rape and the hidden shame. Can Rachel tie the characters in this novel, in this town ,to the "night swim" in the past and the crime in the present. This novel does not disappoint.

The Night Swim kept me guessing all the way through until the big reveal. I never felt fully confident in any prediction I made, and I absolutely love that in that in a mystery!
The Night Swim follows Rachel Krall, a popular true crime podcast host who’s traveled to the small town of Neapolis to cover the trial of a local rape case. On trial is the town’s golden boy, a popular swimmer with Olympic dreams accused of rape. The trial is a big deal, lots of conflicting opinions. While there, Rachel begins receiving notes from Hannah, a former resident of Neapolis whose sister, Jenny, was killed there 25 years ago. While it was officially ruled an accidental drowning, Hannah isn’t so sure and is pleading with Rachel to help her prove it was murder. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers truths that will change many lives.
The story takes a look at how both your reputation and your influence, especially in a small town, can really affect your life. This story was pretty intense at times and deserves a trigger warning about sexual assault/rape (though not overly graphic and a topic handled with sensitivity in the writing, in my opinion). This was a story told with great character development and intriguing mystery and I believe it’ll be very popular after its release!

Raw and emotional powerhouse of a book. When Rachel comes to the coastal town of Neapolis to cover the rape trial of a star athlete for her true crime podcast, she finds herself embroiled in another mystery that has divided the town. It seems the town of Neopolis has a habit of letting its residents get away with rape and abuse for many years. One of the best books I have read in years. Beautifully written story of a terrible subject and the devastation it causes for everyone surrounding it. Highly recommend.

I volunteered to read this book, in exchange for an honest review through netgalley. This was a good book. It was well written and the characters are described well. This was the first time reading a book featuring a podcast, Im sitting here like why haven't I read a book featuring a podcast before. It was so good. It kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next. I highly recommend this book, but there is trigger warnings for rape.

“This is Rachel Krall for Guilty or Not Guilty, the podcast that puts you in the jury box”. Chilling words that describe the ending remarks of Rachel Kralls’s podcast. Two intersecting story lines in one beachside community. A suspected murder 20 years ago and a sister looking to find answers to buried questions. A modern day rape of a 16 year old girl. The race to find answers to two unimaginable crimes. An unexpected twist that will make you question everything you’ve read and fear for Rachel’s safety.

While not as good as The Escape Room, this was still a really fun read. A solid thriller, with a fun podcast twist.

This title was incredible, and took me by surprise many times.
Know for her popular podcast, Rachel is headed to the town where she will be researching and watching a trial for her next season. Unlike her past seasons, she's raising the bar with this one, a rape trial that's all anyone can talk about.
On her way she is reached out to for an unsolved case from 20 years ago, and the two incidents are quickly woven together.
Fantastic main character, with a unique story, this one took hold of me as a reader and I was enthralled.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Rachel is the host of a popular podcast focusing on people who were wrongly accused. The third season of the podcast needs to be better and different than the first two seasons. She decides to cover a live rape trial that has similarities to a crime that took place twenty five years ago.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book. I read it in a day. The twist at the end is amazing! The writing is so good and the characters well developed. This is an incredible psychological thriller that keeps you guessing.
Than you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy for an honest review.

I received a copy of this via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The sophomore title of Megan Goldin is a marvel. It has a distinctly different feel from her first book but still delivers a powerful suspense filled with multiple layers. An extremely fact paced read that compels the reader to plow right through it. Slow down and savor Goldin's style and enjoy!

This novel follows the trial about the rape of a sixteen-years old girl. The accused is a young athlete and son of a well-known local business man.
The novel is narrated by Rachel Krall, the producer of a popular crime podcast. She visits the town where the trial is taking place to produce a series of podcast about the case.
While in town, she starts receiving letters from Hannah, who believes her sister Jenny was murdered 25 years ago in the same town but that her crime was never investigated.
This novel was very different from the author’s previous novel The Escape Room (which I loved). While the previous novel was a fast-paced, entertaining thriller, this book was more of an exploration of the legal and emotional consequences of rape in the victims and their family’s lives as well as those of the accused.
The novel is well written and the characters are compelling, I liked it and recommend it but it was not an easy read.

The Night Swim by Megan Goldin is sure to be a crowd-pleaser! I finished this novel in a single day and have been recommending it to friends ever since.
Raised a generation apart, two young girls experience an uncannily similar fate. Both are brutalized by young men considered the scions of the day. Each is held up to the humiliation of public scrutiny and blamed for her own fate.
When the first falls victim to an untimely death, no one other than her ten year- old sister, Hannah, remains to mark her passing. Twenty-five years later, as justice hangs in the balance for the second victim, Hannah returns to unearth the truth about her sister's death. She appeals to a podcast journalist, Rachel, for help. Equally intrigued and unnerved by Hannah's cryptic messages, she reluctantly agrees. Their quest into the underpinnings of this upstanding community will have you second guessing who is at the very core of evil and invoking karma to have her way with them...signing off ...
Be ye warned, there is danger in unearthing the secrets that haunt the living. Tread ye lightly so as not to tarry with the dead!
