I usually love shifter romances but something about this just meant I struggled to connect with the story, it was ok but just didn’t grip me. They’re meant to be federal agents but are so obsessed with each other you could have taken them out easily they were so unfocused. Jes I just didn’t really like and there wasn’t much chemistry between her and Jake , not for me unfortunately

Wolf Under Fire is the first book in the STAT series by Paige Tyler. It delves deeper into the mythos created in the SWAT world. While some of the favorite characters from the SWAT team do make cameos in this book, the focus is on illuminating a new world and mythos and focusing on the character development of the lead characters, Wolf shifter Jake Huang and the deadly STAT agent Jestina Ridley.

This book introduces the female STAT agent Jestina Ridley, who is part of a secret unit that tracks down and stops supernatural creatures. On a case in London, where her team is brutally murdered, she takes the help of Jake and his team.

Wolf shifter and STAT Officer Jake Huang is a highly powerful lycanthrope who is an integral part of the new STAT unit. He goes to London to back Jestina up and protect the world from threats old and new. He will do whatever it takes to take down the creatures poised to destroy the world as we know it.

Together, Jake and Jestina work together to build trust and track down the forces bent on destroying the world as we know it. What they find is something out of their wildest nightmares. This book does justice to its name and is truly spellbinding. Paige Tyler’s expansion of her werewolf mythos has given ‘Wolf Under Fire’ more nuance and depth while melding humor with paranormal suspense. Her characters have such depth that you just can't help rooting for them.

I love books with paranormal romance, but I just couldn’t get into this book. The mythos of these particular werewolves was unconventional and spotty. I mean, sure, I get that having a secret werewolf gene that is activated by some traumatic situation is a cool premise. But be consistent with the amount of trauma needed. Also, the assignations of Alpha, Omega, and Beta seemed lazy.

Then the main characters kept annoying me with how easily they got distracted with thoughts of each other when they were supposed to be these badass Federal Agents. They seemed to zone out thinking about each other then pop back into reality when they realized, “hmmm, maybe I should be paying attention to my mission so I don’t get my teammates killed.”

The writing style was just too juvenile for my liking. The premise was great, but the execution was sorely lacking. I prefer my werewolves a la Patricia Briggs or Laurell K. Hamilton.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for releasing this ARC to me in exchange for an honest review.

Just like the SWAT series I think I am really going to love this new STAT series. I love me some werewolves! Ms. Tyler knows how to do paranormal romance right. And this new series spin-off starts off with a bang for sure! And I love that it seems like it is going to be an international thing, which is cool and intriguing. This story mainly takes place in England and is full of action but still has plenty of character development, relationship building and intimacy. Jake Huang who we have met before is a former Navy SEAL and is the alpha of his new pack. He travels with his new team to join forces with Jestina Ridley who is human and recently lost her team members to what she thinks is a werewolf. So as you can imagine she starts off with some serious trust issues and hesitancy. Jake is strong, sexy and hard to resist and a force to be reckoned with; the rest of his team are equally fascinating-Caleb, Harley, Misty and Forrest all with their own interesting skill-sets/abilities. I really liked the relationship between Jake and Jes, but I also really enjoyed the story as a whole because it has just the right amount of all the ingredients that make up a great paranormal romance! Look forward to more!

I received this ARC from Netgalley.

3.75 Hearts Welcome to STAT which is different from SWAT by Tyler…. But not by a lot. Tyler brings us back to more on the job shifters. But just a different team.

The world knows of shifters and some people haven’t figured out that the shifters aren’t a danger to them and it feels like there is a racism aspect against the shifters. But when Jes needs STAT to help find who brutally attacked her team she gets a werewolf shifter. But she thinks the creature who attacked her team was a werewolf so it is hard for her to trust Jake and his pack.

Tyler has written a number of shifter books and while I like her writing it is hard to change up the story when it is the same song, different verse. I wish with this new series she had stepped away from the wolf shifter. Maybe a different kind of shifter? Bear, cat, other? But still a good read for fans of Tyler.

I really enjoyed Wolf Under Fire by Paige Tyler. The is a supernatural thriller that kept me engaged the whole time. Think Mission Impossible with a supernatural twist.

The novel centers around Jess, a human agent who is part of the Special Threat Assessment Team (STAT). The team's mission is to intervene in situations where supernaturals are behaving badly (most humans are unaware of the presence of supernatural beings). I loved Jes. She is a great, strong, female lead. She may not be supernatural but she manages to keep up with everyone else and is a force to be reckoned with. The hero of the story is Jake, a relatively new werewolf who is adjusting to his new role as werewolf alpha and leader of his STAT team. Jake was a perfect blend of alpha male combined with thoughtful protectiveness. I also really enjoyed the supporting characters in this story ranging from werewolves, to someone with the power to communicate with electronics, to other human characters. They made for an interesting and diverse range of characters.

The storyline centers around the STAT team's mission to find a kidnapped girl. The story had a great flow to it. We move from place to place with the team as the plot develops. I really enjoyed the fast pace with lots of action. It is a book I did not want to put down!

If there was a weakness to the book I think it is that I wanted to know more about this supernatural world. Tyler describes the basics of the world but I wanted more. After I was finished with the book I found out this was a spin off series. The book is definitely enjoyable and completely readable without having read the first series but I'm about to go on a binge of Tyler's previous series, SWAT.

Wolf Under Fire by Paige Tyler

Paranormal shifter romantic suspense.
1st book in the Spin-off of the SWAT series (Special Wolf Assessment Team).
Wolf shifters law enforcement goes international.
Can be read as a stand-alone.

STAT Agent (Special Threat Assessment Team) Jake Huang joins his new team and pack in London to investigate supernatural killings. STAT agent Jes Ridley doesn’t know what killed her teammates, but it wasn’t human and neither is Jake. Trust will have to be earned within her new team mixed of humans and werewolves.

A fast moving, easy read with non-stop adventure. Full of action, espionage and hot sex, this new team is dynamic and smart.
I enjoyed the action, the beginning friendships and learning the special characteristics of the team. Finding The One makes these romances uplifting and hopeful.

Excerpt:
“There probably wasn’t a werewolf out there in the world who didn’t know the legend of The One—the thought that Jes might be his had never entered his mind. Seriously, how could she be? Soul mates were supposed to be a one-in-a-million thing. Maybe even one in a billion.
“You’ve heard wolves mate for life, right?” Caleb asked Forrest. When the guy nodded, he continued, “Well, in some ways, werewolves do the same thing. There’s supposed to be one perfect person out there for each of us who we’re meant to be with forever. When a werewolf meets his or her soul mate, it’s supposed to be like catching lightning in a bottle.”
“Soul mates. Wow,” Forrest breathed. “I mean, Misty and I are solid, but I made a lot of dumb mistakes when we first started dating. Would have been nice to know we’re soul mates the moment we met.”
“You’d think so,” Caleb agreed with a snort. “But for some reason, Jake is too busy swimming around in that river in Egypt to notice what’s right in front of him.”

I have been a fan of Paige Tyler for about 3 years now. I have read all of the X-Ops series and am working through the SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team series. I hoped at the chance to start reading the new STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team series.

Jestina Ridley horrible luck. She looses her teammates to an unknown supernatural creature only to be put on a new team, lead by Jake Huang, full of werewolves and supernaturals. Now she must learn to put that fear aside to save a little child who was kidnapped.

Most of the story is centered around Jes and Jakes story, through the book you also learn more about the other people who make up this STAT team. A team that has zero time to train or even really get to know each other before being sent half way across the country to work together.

Paige takes you on an adventure from being coop -up in a small house in London to a car chance down the narrow streets and more. She gives you the picture of what the cozy little house looks like. You can almost feel as if you are sitting right alongside the team during mission discussions.

I really enjoy how Paige pulls the reader into feeling the confusion of seeing a supernatural for the first time, or even how Jes is scared of how strong her feelings are for Jake after such a short time because he is a werewolf and how she believes they are dangerous. But then you go to the next chapter and you can feel exactly how Jake feels for being judged because he is different and on things he didn't do.

It might say the first in a series but readers will really want to go back former series to understand the different characters. Paige Tyler does a wonderful job of catching up readers from her other books in the series. The author is able to create character development, action, romance and heart in to her short fast paced books. There is romance, wonder and sex. Not to mention lots of bad to the bone characters I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley.

Readers will find a new world with use agents who are just as different as the first Wold Series.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Paige Tyle Wolf Under Fire.

Wolf Under Fire
STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team Series - Book 1
Follows SWAT Series Book 10
By Paige Tyler

Sourcebooks Casablanca - June 2020

Paranormal Romance

Jake Huang had moved to DC with his small pack, Zoe and Chloe, twin eighteen year old beta werewolves. He had rescued them after their parents were murdered. They had all agreed he should take this new opportunity to work for STAT, where he could fully utilize his alpha werewolf abilities on supernatural cases. His new team included both werewolves and non. One was a woman whose teammates had just possibly been murdered by werewolves.

Jestina Ridley knew she was lucky to have not been killed by the monster whose eyes had glowed yellow. She wasn't happy to join a team with three werewolves. She wasn't sure she could trust any of them after what she had seen, but she quickly realizes her prejudice. Even if it was a werewolf, that didn't mean she couldn't rely on Jake and the others. It had nothing to do with the growing yearning she felt for Jake.

Jake knew their priority was their assignment to rescue a kidnapped teen. The whole team needed to learn how to work as a cohesive unit, learn each other's strengths and weaknesses. They had to uncover the truth of what and who was behind the attacks and the kidnapping, and try to survive. Only then Jake could approach Jes about the not quite a myth of her being The One for him.

Wolf Under Fire is an action packed international adventure with a fascinating new team, a supernatural mystery, and romance. Jake and Jes are equal parts tough and tender. Willing to face both the danger and their emotions. I loved Jake's care of the twins, and his willingness to face rejection from Jes. Jes was a fighter, willing to fight for the vulnerable, and for her love for Jake. They are the perfect match. Although Jake and the twins had been introduced in the SWAT series, and it is in the same world, this new series does stand on its own. Wolf Under Fire is a brilliant introduction to the new STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team series, and I eagerly await the next.

This was my first book by this author, though she's been on my radar for a while. I really enjoyed her paranormal world, and I'll definitely be reading more!

Jestina Ridley is a human STAT agent, and she's in London on a kidnapping job, when everything goes terribly wrong. When she calls for backup, they send her a new team, headed by a sexy wolf, and she's shocked by her sudden attraction to him.

Jake Huang is a werewolf, and a former Navy SEAL and police officer, who's just taken a new job with STAT. He moved to D.C. with the twin teenage girl beta wolves, who he is guardian of, after their parents' deaths. They are his pack now, though the fellow wolf agents on his new STAT team will be his pack too. If they can manage to form a proper team with all their disparate personalities. But, when he meets Jes, he's SHOOK because he's never been drawn to someone as strongly, or as quickly. But what about the whole team dynamic?

Jake and Jes felt a connection from the start, but she had to get over her preconceived notions about werewolves, and he had to figure out if the legends he's always heard about "The One" are for real. I loved their little dance around each other, in between all the drama going on with their case. Their team was fascinating too. I enjoyed the dynamics between each of the team members, and how it was a mix of humans and supernaturals. This series was cool because of all the varieties of creatures that were involved in the world. Many were familiar, but with slightly different mythologies, and some were new to me.

The suspense plot was exciting and unexpected. I guessed a few of the things, and others had me totally surprised. I really enjoyed all the action and intrigue. The stakes felt real from the beginning, even with the wolves having super healing abilities.

Jake and Jes were delicious and their connection was steamy and awesome. I adored them as a couple, and how the whole team really became a family. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series!

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks for the advanced copy of Wolf under fire by Paige Tyler. I love Paige's SWAT series so when I found out there was a new spinoff series starting I couldnt wait to read it! I love the tag line they came up for the series too...For the cases no one else can solve, they send in the Special Threat Assessment Team! STAT agent Jestina Ridley must come to grips with new supernatural teammates when something kills her team in London. Convinced it was werewolves that butchered her team, she doesnt trust Alpha werewolf Jake Huang but they will have to trust each other in order to get the job done. I enjoyed the book. The thrill of the chase, the sexy scenes, I did miss SWAT. It was a good start to the series. What did I love? Caleb....dont ask me why....but I want more Caleb 31/2 stars

After having devoured the SWAT series of Paige Tyler, I was very happy to see a spin-off series starting with Wolf Under Fire: the STAT series: Special Threat Assessment Team series. However, where the SWAT Series are a lot about hot and hunky werewolves, this series goes more into the supernatural world, with different species being a threat to humanity.
In my opinion, the story is much darker and less swoonworthy than the SWAT series. So, although I enjoyed the story of wherewolf Jake and his new crew, I don't know if I'm going to follow this series or not. Maybe I'll give the next story a try. But if it stays as bloody as this one, I think I'll pass and stick to my hunky wherewolves in SWAT. Three and a half stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

Wolf Under Fire by Paige Tyler is the first book in her new STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team series. STAT series is sort of a spin off from Tyler’s SWAT series, which also had one of the members from the SWAT team being the hero in this series. The STAT team is assigned unsolvable cases, which will include supernatural creatures.

Jestina Ridley, our heroine, works for Special Threat Assessment Team (STAT) and is on assignment with her fellow team mates to investigate a kidnapping, which horribly goes wrong with the death of her teammates. Jes had a glimpse at a strange creature when she arrived on the scene, but what she may have seen disappeared quickly. Her boss brings her back home, as she is now being placed on a new team.
Jake Huang, a former Navy Seal, whom we met in previous SWAT story, has been placed in charge of the STAT team. Jake is an Alpha werewolf, and meets his team for the first time, before they all head to London to work on the kidnapping case. Jes at first is not too keen on some of the members of the team being werewolves, as she fears werewolves were the ones who killed her team. In a short time, she will learn to accept them as good guys, as well as the surprise attraction she has with Jake. The rest of the STAT team were awesome, as I loved them all; Caleb, Misty, Harley and Forest; as well as Zoe & Chloe, whom Jake took under his wing, as part of his pack. I loved the concept of Misty being a technopath, and what she can do. Very cool.

Once the team begins to investigate the case, it becomes obvious that more is at stake than just a kidnapping, which could involve high level attacks on political and wealthy people, escalating to a major world changing effect. The team will also discover these creatures (more than werewolves) are difficult to kill.
What follows is an action packed, non-stop, exciting thriller that held me on the edge of our seats throughout, unable to put the book down. There were so many dire situations that had the team in danger, with their lives hanging by a thread; Tyler had so many surprises and twists, that kept us on our toes. I loved that over a short period of time, Jes and Jake began to have strong feelings and chemistry between them, and soon Jake will realize that she is the ‘One’. They were so good together.

Wolf Under Fire was a sensational start to this series. It was an exciting action filled adventure from start to finish, with a wonderful couple, and great secondary characters, whom I am sure will play major parts in the future books. Once again Paige Tyler gives us fun new series, which I cannot wait to see what she has in store of us next.

Well Paige started her new series off with a bang! Literally! I felt there was more suspense in this book than in previous ones, and it worked. With the new series STAT, we are introduced to a team that moves around the world instead of focusing on one location. I really liked the team development in this story. It was well thought out.

Jake and Jes really worked. The dynamic of their relationship really was sweet to watch. Knowing that Jes was a little freaked out by supernaturals Jake handled their relationship very well.

A great start to a new series.

Wolf Under Fire by Paige Tyler is a spin-off from her SWAT series. Jake Huang has been recruited to head up a new team for STAT: Special Threat Assessment Team. Jestina Ridley has been teamed up with Jake to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. If you love a little adventure and mystery in your books this is the one for you. I loved the characters and I can’t wait to see where their next assignment takes the team.

This was a good start to the series. while a spin-off of her SWAT series and taking place in the same "world", you don't need to have read that series first as the ties are the same world and the hero (plus a couple other of the wolves) was only a only a minor secondary character in a prior book along with the idea of the STAT team/division. While this is an insta/fated love match, it isn't overly rushed and issues/concerns addressed as part of the developing relationship. The author expands her paranormal world with new types of characters and team dynamics. There's plenty of action right from the get go along with a nice touch of humor. All in all, this was an enjoyable read with plenty of interesting characters and plot. I'm curious as to what will happen next.

Here we meet the newly formed Special Threat Assessment Team (STAT), bravely headed by Jake Huang. Jake has recently moved to DC to start a new life and a new job with the twin beta werewolves that he has taken responsibility for. The STAT team is a mixture of werewolves and humans, and nobody really knows each other. Jes is one of the humans of the new STAT team. She is distrustful of the three werewolves that are now part of the team. They all have to get over their individual reservations real quick, when they are sent on a mission to London to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl.

We are introduced to a new species of non-human, who are also the bad guys, but for most of the book we have no idea who they are or what their motivations are. The team learns through trial and error what works and what doesn’t when it comes to taking down the bad guys. This was interesting and things do fall into place very neatly.

I liked Jake and Jes, and their romance was okay. I liked them together, but there wasn’t enough spark. Since all the characters in the team are new, there was a lot of time spent introducing them. Each of them is unique and makes a valuable contribution. Caleb especially was an interesting character.

The action scenes played out well, and the team definitely learned how to work together.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC to review. Any thoughts and opinions are my own.

As a new reader to Paige Tyler, I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a quick read, flush with action and romance, sheltered under the umbrella of SFF. Her worldbuilding is perfunctory (there are werewolves, they work for the government sometimes, maybe, and there are other creatures), and it felt like more time was taken describing the romantic scenes than there was building the universe. The action was fine; I don't think I cared enough about any of the characters to worry about their survival. All in all, it was an ok urban fantasy/romance novel - missing the romance tag on the information page definitely threw me for a loop.
