This is the third installment of the Royal Highlander series. The Series follows three strong women. In this story, we learn Morrigan’s story. Morrigan meets Aiden, a famous barrister. They have a connection which Morrigan tries to resist.

The Serious is well put together. I wouldn’t recommend reading them out of order however. The stories in the series build on each other. So if you read them out of order you get some spoilers.

Overall it’s highly enjoyable. And I’d recommend it.

Morrigan is a warrior who wants revenge for what was done to her and her family. Aiden is a barrister who wants to get into politics. They meet when Aiden stops Morrigan from murdering a witness he needs for his upcoming trail.

Their is corrupt government, danger, blackmail, passion, love, loyalty and redemption.

Morrigan Drummond has so far led a life full of danger. Her father was a doctor but involved with the rebellious causes. After his death she traveled with her stepsister and step-mother, also a doctor into the Scottish highlands. She has learned to protect herself by training with the men. The sight of an old enemy sends her rushing for revenge.

Aidan Grant is a laywer who defends those accused of offences against the crown. The biggest problem he has is the courts and officials he must deal with are corrupt. He needs an informant to testify.

This is an action packed story full of excitement, danger and humour. Fabulous characters many of which were in the previous books in the series. You can enjoy this on it's own but the series is better read in order.

Very exciting.

While I enjoyed this book, I thought it was too busy. I got a little lost with all the subplots. I know it the author tying up the loose ends from the prior books which makes it worth reading. It was good to have everything complete.
The romance of Aidan and Morrigan was fun and the writing very good. It was interesting about the politics of Scotland.

Aidan and Morrigan are very likable characters and make an interesting pair who seem perfect for each other. But this felt more about history and the happenings after the Cullodeon war in Scotland more than romance. I wish there was more romance between the pair. For the fans of Outlander series, Cullodeon war aftermath events will be more interesting for sure. Morrigan is so much ahead of her times especially the way she can fight, wield the weapons and inflict wounds. Her characterization is built upon her troubles in the past from which she only grows braver. Aidan is such a perfect gentleman who is full of empathy, nobleness and brilliance that no wonder Morrigan couldn't stop herself from falling in love with him. The adventures they plan and face are brilliant as well.

This one brings in more about the plots for the kingdom around that time where the lead characters do play key roles. I expected more romance and steam which felt lacking. For the history buffs, this will be a good read.

Thanks to Netgalley & St. Martin’s press for this ARC! The review is my own.

I loved the description of this book!
“Fiery Morrigan Drummond flees to the Highlands to avenge her father’s death. When she arrives, she meets a barrister named Aidan, who hopes to convince Morrigan to help him defend two innocent men and strike a blow to the man responsible for her father’s death. Can two warriors committed to a cause stand down long enough to open their hearts to a love fierce enough to last … forever?”

Morrigan had been the character I wanted to read about the most from the beginning and she didn’t disappoint! Aidan is a barrister who values both reason & passion - the second of which Morrigan has in spades. There are a few twists to their love story and the backdrop of the Radical War of 1820 provided some historical basis that made it more interesting than a typical contemporary story.

I highly recommend this book!

The story starts slow and it is a little confusing at first. However it picks up. This is a fun read.

Excellent! Very well written historical romance. Perfect blend of intrigue, adventure, history and romance. Morrigan is feisty, practical, a pillar of strength, courage and compassion. Absolutely loved her interactions with Aidan, that are so comical yet serious. I laughed my way through several pages after their first encounter which is one of the most unforgettable, engaging and instantly gripping scenes I've read. Aidan is a great character as well, very kind, determined and patient. This was such a joy to read and will be my go-to when I need to read a book that I am guaranteed to love revisiting.

Morrigan is not your average young lady, she’s more comfortable being with the warriors, learning to fight and fighting the “cause” than being a true lady. During one of their missions she sees an unwelcome blast from her past. Thinking with her passionate heart and not her brains she sneaks away from her group with thoughts of killing her foe but along the way she collides with Aidan. As a Scottish lawyer trying to defend his unjustly imprisoned clients Aidan will use any means to support their defense and having his witness be attacked by this slip of a girl does not follow along with his plans. After a scuffle the two separate not realizing they would soon meet again. Most of the story circles around the political climate of the Highlands during the early 1800s with lots of interweaving characters but relationship between Aidan and Morrigan seems almost a side plot. They seem to compliment each other but there’s little heat to the romance (mostly later on). Still there is a lot of intrigue and mystery, especially surrounding the mysterious “witness” and his part in Morrigan’s past, which help fuel the story line and lots of tender moments between the leads. I just wish there was more of the relationship as the focus. 4 stars. I received an arc copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.

Morrigan is such a great character. She is feisty and determined. She makes a great addition to the other strong women of the castle. I like how she learns to fight and protect herself at a time in history when women would just ornaments. If I was going to live in old Scotland I want to be in the same spot as these women.
Aidan makes a good match of wits for Morrigan. He is a lawyer calm and logical where she is impulsive and a fighter. A good love story mixed with the political background to add interest.
I liked the book.

I found it hard to get into this book but persevered and within a few chapters started to enjoy it. A tale a bit different from the normal romance which tells the story of an extremely feisty lady and her tall, handsome, brave and clever man. Entertaining

The McGoldricks have crafted an edge of the seat tale based on a period of time and an interplay of characters whose like we rarely see in historical romances. Both Scottish and English royalty make appearances in this story about the meeting of a barrister, who is a former soldier, and a female resistance fighter who battle at first glance leading to blood spilled by both. Despite a truce being called, plenty of conflict remains as the two battle themselves to arrive at the inevitable HEA. A pleasant and interesting read about a period of history we ought to be familiar with.

“Highland Sword” is the third installment in May McGoldrick’s Royal Highlander series, and it is the perfect accompaniment to this trilogy. Morrigan Drummond was finding her place in her stepmother’s house by training with the other warriors of the laird. She is allowed to accompany the warriors into town when she hears a voice from her past that makes her blood run cold. As she attempts to bring harm to the voice, she is foiled by a handsome stranger. Aiden Grant is a lawyer who is meeting a secret informant that can help him defend two young men who have been accused of insurrection against the crown when he takes on the young lady before she can injure his informant. Aiden’s and Morrigan cross paths once again at her home where they both are fighting for the same cause. The time they spend together brings them closer and soon they become inseparable and love conquers all. I was given an advanced copy of this book, and all of the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

While this book had a bit of humor, mystery and romance, it was not really my favorite historical fiction. I think the problem was there were too many characters and plots right away and took me a bit to get everything straight and begin to enjoy the story. Aiden and Morrigan were the two main characters and their story was fun to see develop.
Recommend to those who read the first two books in the series.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Outstanding historical fiction! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was full of interesting characters, historical perspectives, intriguing plots and of course, romance. The humorous banter between Aidan and his brother Sebastian and Morrigan and Aidan was entertaining and balanced the seriousness of the plots and dangers they endured. Great book!

While I enjoyed this book, I didn't love it. I loved the first two books and thought this would be the same, instead it started very slowly and with so many characters that it took effort to actually follow what the author was writing. I think part of the problem is that the author tied up all the loose ends from the prior books, in addition to this book telling a complicated story of its own.

I liked both Morrigan and Aiden and enjoyed their romance. However, it was weighted down so much by the subplots that I kept putting the book down.

If you've read the prior books in the series, this is worth reading just to see how the series concludes. While I remain a fan of the author, this is not her best work.

Sorry, this book just wasn't for me. There were too many characters, places, and relationships to try and keep up with or really get into the novel. Perhaps this book will resonate with others, but I could not finish the book.

Thank you, NetGalley for providing me with a copy to read and review.

A story of life in the highlands. An area torn about by wars and aristocracy, can two people put aside their differences and embrace the love they feel for each other.

While I did enjoy the main characters, I found that I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story. There were a lot of characters coming and going from the plot. About half way through the book the chapters began to alternate perspective, which is not my favorite way to move the story along. If you enjoy law and a very in-depth back story, this might be just the book for you.

I found the main characters to be delightful and I was rooting for them to be together. All in all, I believe I was just looking for a little more love story and a little less every day life.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the opportunity to read Highland Sword. All opinions are my own.
