This amazing book tells the story of M. A. Bright. She’s a reclusive, somewhat prickly retired school teacher and author of a bestseller. At the age of seventeen she gets a job in the service of HRH Prince Edward; it’s like a dream come true. As they tour Australia after the great war and Maddie gets to know the Prince and the rest of his staff, she decides to write a book.
This book is SO, SO GOOD. The author skillfully weaves the different threads of the plot together until all the pieces fall satisfactorily into place. It even surprised me with its unexpected ending. It’s a love story and a story of loss. It’s about fame and the media and their relentless pursuit of a story no matter the cost. Maddie is a remarkable character, one I won’t soon forget. Her story tugged at my heartstrings. For lovers of women’s fiction, historical fiction and anyone who enjoys a really good royal story.
