As someone who is very familiar with Keto, Gary Taubes is beyond reproach in his knowledge on this subject. I would recommend this book to anyone who anyone who wants to understand the nuts and bolts of the keto diet from a very well informed source. Thej book is well written and full of information.

Gary Taubes has written a detailed and thought-provoking book detailing the evidence supporting the controversial ketogenic diet. An ideal book for those contemplating this extreme method of weight loss. However, if you are looking for diet plans and recipes this is not the book for you. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Holy hell this book is wordy. It's akin to watching all the Peter Jackson LoTR movies (the extended versions, obviously) at half speed.

Now for someone who doesn't know anything about Keto and who loves reading a story that meanders to the point, this book is perfect.

But, if you - like most people - ever researched Keto online or have actually followed it for awhile, this book is just old wine in a new bottle. All of this information is available online, you just won't get the storytelling that you'll get here.

Each chapter read like a white paper, and try as I might, I couldn't help it - my eyes glazed over too many times to count. Not because what I was reading wasn't interesting, but because I'd read about it before in a much shorter, bulleted format on various blogs.

There are however pluses to this book, which leads me to give it one extra star:- * The research done in staggering. Kudos to the effort taken. I may not relate to it, but I can credit the amount of work that went into this book.
* It actually makes a mention of the fact that there might be side effects (just a mention, mind you) and doesn't brush it under the carpet.
* It details out what you can include, what you need to avoid and what you can enjoy in moderation. It's still possible to get information overload line you would if you were researching Keto online, but at least all the information is collated in one place.

What didn't work?
* No comparison to other, more healthier diets?
* I can't help but feel like there's a conformation bias operating at the base of this book.

Conclusion: this book may have worked better with me if I had no idea about Keto. I'd followed it for a month earlier in 2020 before stopping due to not wanting to not worry about weight with a pandemic. Ergo, I'd done a lot of research back then. I was thinking about getting back into it, so this book seemed like it would do the trick in motivating me. Unfortunately, it's more of a research manual than a motivational novel. This book didn't take anything away, but it didn't really add much to me either.

Final verdict: 2 stars. Sorry. Hope it works out better for others out there.

Gary Taubes' "The Case for Keto" is an absolute MUST read for anyone who is interested or currently following a keto diet. There is no fluff in Taubes' book. Instead, we are presented with many facts, backed up by research and studies. Taube doesn't simply spout study results off, either. Taube took his time to do the research - Twenty years and interviews with over 100 physicians who prefer keto diets vs. other diets. For newbies, he also covers the diet in-depth detailing what you should eat, what you shouldn't eat, and what you can eat in moderation. I really enjoyed that he personalized the diet by sharing his personal experiences, like eating berries when they were in season. I believe many people will gain knowledge and lose weight by reading this book.

The Case for Keto is the latest book in journalist, Gary Taubes quest to learn more about food and diets. Just as in his book Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes gives an excellent history of the ketogenic diet, its uses and some of the press, both good and bad for the diet. This book is extremely well-researched with lots of sources available.
For those not familiar with the ketogenic diet, this would not be the first book to read. If you are familiar, but want more information, especially about the history I highly recommend this book. I received a complementary advanced copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

10 stars. Keto is a lifesaver. It doesn't contain a lot of information I didn't already have and skimmed over some of it. Hopefully this book will help convince the sceptics. Thank you!

I could not wait to get my hands on Gary Taubes' latest book and this did not disappoint. His book, The Case Against Sugar, was truly lifechanging for me and my eating habits/lifestyle and this read expanded my knowledge of health even more. Thoughtfully laid out and explained in an easily understood way, Taubes helps the reader to walk through debunking may traditional approaches to diet/weight loss while simultaneously bringing to light new approaches for fueling the body. Mind-blowing and life-altering. A must-read for anyone who wants to live their best life.

I have read lots of books on Keto and this one felt the same as the other ones I have read in the past. Was hoping for a little more than all the standard info you can get from google. I think if you were completely unaware of what Keto was and the premise behind it, then this would be helpful. But otherwise, it left a seasoned dieter feeling like it never quite delivered.

I enjoyed this book for what it is, an educational book backed by scientific research explaining what keto is, how it works in aid to weight loss and the history behind it. By no means is this a fun, quick read but it’s full of information that I think is important to anyone wanting to embark on the ketogenic diet. Thank you Netgalley for my ARC of this book!

This book is extremely helpful for anyone curious about keto or a low carb high fat diet. It breaks down the science behind it and the criticisms of it and the standard American diet in language that is easy to understand. It covers the different approaches and how to make it work for your individual needs. One of the main points is that everyone is different so experiment and figure out what works for you. The goal is to find an approach that makes you healthier that you can sustain for a lifetime and that will look different for everyone.

I've been interested in keto for some time and was super excited to read this book. This book was full of information and is very well written, but it's not a book that you're going to sit down and read in one sitting.

I haven't read anything from this author before but the title grabbed me straight away as I am currently doing Keto. It was very informative and explains the science behind keto. As someone who has always battled my weight and had other health issues (also recently started Keto), I found it refreshing that this was not just focussing on weight/fat loss but other health benefits also. Really recommend to anyone looking to lose weight and improve their overall health. Thanks!

I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated that it was a book about keto that wasn’t specifically a “diet book.” I also appreciated that the author discussed obesity with compassion and called out fatphobia and harmful moralistic diet culture.

****ARC provided by Netgalley for free review*** This book was full of scientific, well researched information about living a keto lifestyle. I am impressed by all of the detail and substantiated facts to prove the authors points. It is full of information yet explained in uncomplicated terms to make it easy for someone not of medical or health background to understand and relate to. This is a very good book to read if you’re considering living a keto life! It makes switching routine and habits make sense and helps you understand the way the body works and in turn, why people are having so much success with keto! Enjoy this read and be healthy!

While there is decent information included in The Case for Keto, I found it to be very redundant and repetitive - to the point that I ended up skipping most of the second half of the book. When the author did touch on the negative aspects of the diet, which I give him credit for doing, he sort of blows them off. Those sections almost read as “this can raise your cholesterol and many people need medication for it, but I chose not to take any. Good luck with your choices! Again, there is some good info included, but a case was certainly not firmly presented in keto’s favor in my opinion.

Gary Taubes is amazing. He illuminates what big agriculture (corn, wheat, sugar) and big pharma do not want you to see. Namely, that eating a diet based upon the diets of our forebears in evolutionary history will help you lose weight, keep the weight off, and feel great.

This book stands out from other books concerning Keto and low-carb high-fat diets because Taubes explains in great detail why a majority of westerners suffer from Metabolic Syndrome (i.e. most of us are overweight!).. Taubes is an investigative journalist, and he expertly breaks down the fallacious thinking around counting calories, U.S. Government food policy and the misguided war against saturated fat.

In the making of this work, Mr. Taubes talked to a variety of medical doctors successfully prescribing Ketogenic diets for themselves and their patients. Having said that, I personally would have enjoyed reading more anecdotes (success stories) from those Keto MDs, although you can easily find many such accounts online.

Taubes also does not include a list of recipes in the book; It's not a self-help book in the classical sense, but more of a scientific expose in support of a Keto lifestyle. Because there are currently a number of excellent Keto "how-to" books with detailed grocery shopping lists, recipies, etc., I think Mr. Taubes' decision to omit such content was probably smart. After all, he has proven with his prior works such as "The Case Against Sugar" to be best when setting forth a very rational expose of our flawed health policies.

The Case for Keto is a necessary companion book for anyone who wants to really understand why we're fat and how we can avoid such fate. Buy a copy, read it, and then pass it along to your friends.

I would recommend this for anyone interested in nutrition and curious about ketogenic/low carb diet. There is a lot of scientific discussion regarding the influence of carbs/sugar on our health, discussion of previous studies and the evolution of these studies over the time. Therefore, it is not an easy and fast read but it was very interesting.
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for the ARC.

Rather boring. This is just like all of the other keto books. Not enough recipes. And like all of the other there are hard to find ingredients.

Excellent book, I have read a book by this author before so I knew it would be a good read full of very useful information about the Keto way of eating. It puts forward a very compelling argument f9r Keto. And didn’t disappoint. I very much enjoyed this book and will refer to it again.

I’ve read a book by this author before, so I knew it was going to be good. And this didn’t disappoint. This book is great for anyone who is trying to lose weight, it explains it perfectly and why most diets are almost starvation diets and why they don’t work.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
