Although I was intrigued with this book, I found it hard to believe that one person could've faced the setbacks this man faced and then find his way back to the top again. Whether believable or not, the book is full of action and adventure. It definitely inspires you to understand that you can come back from deepest pits in life

This book was incredible. Paul Evans lead a fascinating life and it was amazing to read about. I like memoirs but this was something special and I didn’t want it to end.

This is the incredible story of one man's will to survive and thrive. The things Paul goes through is unbelievable, but they are true and his story is surreal. I could hardly stop reading this book!

An amazing story! When I Woke Up"is not just a story, but a man's real life, with all it's incredible ups and downs. It's about falling hard, getting back up and starting to walk again - more than just once. I admire Paul's perserverence and tenacity, his courage and above all, his strong sense of family and friend values.

A few life lessons. Interesting learning about different lives and the possibilities and what a person with fight is capable of.

I enjoyed this story from Paul Evans about his life. It kept me interested and I was happy that he survived to tell his tale. It’s truly amazing what people can accomplish when they believe in themselves and this is one of those stories. Very inspiring and well told. I would recommend!

This was an interesting book to read. The author’s certainly seems to be a constant roller coaster of events. While I don’t agree with every choice the author made, nor the way some of the people were treated by the author, it kept my attention to the end.

So many things happened to Paul Evans that it almost seems impossible that one person experienced it all. What a fantastic story. I'm surprised it has become a"major motion picture coming soon to a local theater near you". I noticed that some reviewers mentio ned that some of the things that happened to Evans could have been avoided if he made different choices and I agree. I suppose that is true for us all. If yoy like to read memoirs, especially those with lot of difficult situations that must, or rather have to, be overcome this book will not disappoint.

This is a story of a true entrepreneur. No matter what befalls him he finds his way back using his wit and his ingenuity. Paul Evans has literally been to hell and back, sent to prison twice, almost losing his life due to his partying lifestyle and finally having to flee the country he called home for several years and built a hugely successful business in. Paul's story is one of survival and really looking at your life. In the beginning I truly believe Paul had a fear of success because every time he had it all he fucked it up. I think the final straw was the near death experience which really created a shift in his life.

This was an interesting book in so many aspects. From learning about living as an expat in several different countries, to building a successful business and how the mind of the entrepreneur works. I really appreciated his candid and very honest accounts of how he fucked up his own life so many times but made changes and learned from them.

I absolutely loved this book.

It is the autobiography of Paul Evans, a bar and nightclub mogul of Dubai (previously Egypt). The book goes through a number of 'wake up calls' that he received throughout his life.

Starting with anger issues which resulted in a short prison sentence to a life-threatening illness which resulted in a coma.

This book is very honest and open account and shows the resilience of Paul and his incredible ability to keep bouncing back from events and situations which would break lesser people.

A very thought provoking book.

This book was well written and engaging and I enjoyed the stories, although I didn't relate with the main character that much, Because of this, I found myself drifting towards the end. But then again, everyone is different, so I leave it up to the reader to decide for themselves. One thing for sure you will appreciate is the stories and the tenacity of the author.

This is one person’s confrontation with mortality and it is timely – there is an amazing synchronicity with this book and the awesome global pandemic that presently impacts humankind.
Paul Evans’ story begins with a sort of standard recitation of youthful rebellion folowed by intermittent episodes of risk, disappointments, and success. But he is no ordinary man! From chilly England he lands by chance in Egypt to assist his family with a tourist excursion business. It quickly provides prosperity along with the pitfalls of overindulgence and philandering. And what follows is an amazing narrative that careens from reckless acts, neglected relationships, and inattention to the very goals he has achieved. In the end, Paul’s story conveys an appreciation for life along with a regret for the follies and hardships of others. We can’t say he’s completely redeemed from his past, but he has certainly learned from it and conveys inspiration and a rare honesty, “... there is simply no better way to appreciate what an amazing life you have than to have it ripped away from you.”

This book really gives insider perspective of what it is like to live in the fast lane. It shows how difficult life can be, even when you are living life to the fullest. It is a book of ups and downs but, overall, the message is positive. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a different way to look at their own life and value what they have.

This book is not just another memoir, it's truly written as a manual for life. During these times of sheltering in place as a result of COVID-19 people are complaining about how difficult it is to have to stay at home. If you think that's difficult, reading this book will place that into perspective for you. Paul Evan's journey through incredible obstacles illustrates the ability of mind over matter. If you need some inspiration to get through these "tough" times I suggest you pick this up!

When I Woke Up: One Man's Unbreakable Spirit to Survive was an inspirational book. I liked it and am giving it four stars.

I was looking forward to reading about Paul Evans, the man who went to hell and back. Stories of humans who survive and even thrive against huge odds usually inspire me to be brave and resilient, too.
But I only read a few pages of "When I Woke Up." There is too much profanity for my tastes. Maybe this book is good, but I cannot read it.

A very engaging biography about Paul Evans who went through devastating events that would finish others but made him stronger and more driven to succeed in what ever he desired. The book drew me in within a few paragraph and keep me coming back to see what was coming up next and boy does the events deliver. I felt close to the people in the book and was happy when they succeeded and sad when events were catastrophic, but one thing that bother me is did he really know what was important to him. I don’t know.

Highly recommended

Took a lot to get into, I don't think it's my cup of tea. I could see where some folks may enjoy it more so than me, the beginning was really really detailed and slow which normally I don't mind but this one I actually got lost a few times in the beginning and found myself re-reading areas.

This was an interesting read, but I find it hard to believe that all of these things happened to the author. It seems like way too many things to happen to one person. However, it was inspirational how the author picked himself up from bad situations and was able to move on.
