I found this to be really interesting, the recipes are good and I have tried a couple although I would sa some are quite intricate and require ingredients you may not necessarily recognise. The information contained in the book is enlightening and relevant.

A great guide to making your own DIY beauty products, a really useful way to avoid mass-produced plastic packed big brands who might not have ethical production. More and more of us are trying to make our own things where we can, and this book is a really useful thing to help with that.
There are over 100 recipes for things like scrubs, shampoo, masks and other cosmetics, and all the instructions so you can get started at home.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. My love of beauty and self care combined with the realization that some of the big name beauty brands have cancerous compounds in them, led me to find clean alternatives. This wasnt such an easy task, but this book helped greatly.

Thank you for this, unfortunately I did not manage to read in full. It I will be buying it as the books would be useful to make my own make up.
I have given 3 stars only because I could not read in full

Good Clean Beauty by Caroline and Isabel Bercaw is a book full of beautiful images and lots of ideas to create your own beauty products. It is written with a fun, upbeat style that will appeal to younger readers. While the book has quite a few recipes and tips for making many beauty items, such as face masks and eye shadow, it is one that I recommend with caution.

The book is a comprehensive collection of simple homemade beauty recipes that can easily be made by tweens. Good Clean Beauty starts off with detailed explanations of the benefits of many natural ingredients and supplies that are used in the guide. It is then broken up into sections that focus on different types of beauty products. The contents include:

Introduction
Ingredients and Benefits
Supplies and Equipment
Hair
Body
Makeup
Eyeshadows
Skin Care
About the Authors

❀ INITIAL COST FACTOR IS HIGH

If you have made products like these before, it is likely that you already own some of the ingredients and supplies. However, if this is your first time creating beauty products, there is a significant cost in acquiring the tools and ingredients. Therefore, if this is not something that you are wanting to commit to, it is not a cost-effective way to obtain natural products for your body.

❀ A LACK OF SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

While I appreciate the layout and the simple instructions in Good Clean Beauty, I do agree with many other reviewers that there is a lack of safety information in this book. When making products for your skin, it is important to be aware of what the risks are for certain ingredients and their combinations. Also, as the ingredients are natural, knowing how to store them and for how long is another key aspect that has been ignored in the book.

❀ LOTS OF GREAT IDEAS

If you are looking to create your own skincare and beauty items, Good Clean Beauty by Caroline and Isabel Bercaw is one book to look for. There are a multitude of recipes in this easy to follow instruction book. That being said, this is one beauty book that should be used cautiously.

I didn't really know what to expect at first, but what a tremendous resource this is! I've wanted to get more into natural products for myself but I thought making them myself would be too difficult. It lists all the ingredients you’ll need in the beginning as well as jars and storage containers. Think of it like building up a pantry, pick what you need first and slowly build it up as you go along. Even before I got special oils/extracts/clays, I had ingredients for some in my own. The domino effect hair mask was incredible! I’m definitely looking forward to trying more of these. The only thing I would change is adding shelf life estimates for each recipe.

Good Clean Beauty is a tutorial and recipe guide to making beauty products at home with (fairly) easily sourced natural ingredients by sisterpreneurs Caroline & Isabel Bercaw. Due out 17th March 2020 from Quarto on their Rock Point imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

The writing and formatting are young, upbeat, and positive. The recipes are clean and appealing and made with safe ingredients. The book starts with an alphabetical glossary introduction of supplies and ingredients from activated charcoal to witch hazel. The rest of the book's recipes are grouped roughly by category: hair, body, makeup, eye shadow, and skin care.

Each recipe includes a short description, ingredients (both American standard and metric measurements included - yay!) listed bullet style in a sidebar, and step by step directions. Special tips and usage info are included, highlighted with a sidebar or asterisk.

The chapters are tab highlighted so that recipes can be easily found by using the page margins to find chapters quickly. There's an ingredient index, but the recipe index is not included, and is found in the table of contents. There are no resources or links lists for ingredients, but most everything can be found from online retailers. My only quibble with the book (and it's almost universal with the newer crop of cookery and lifestyle books the last year) is that there are very few photos of finished items and recipe preparation. None of the recipes are extremely complex, so the omission isn't terribly crippling and there are -some- illustrations. The photos which are included are clear and appealing and are in color (see cover photo for an example).

This would make a good choice for young/tween/teenagers who are interested in making their own cosmetics and beauty products for themselves or gift giving.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I just reviewed Good Clean Beauty by Caroline Bercaw; Isabel Bercaw. #GoodCleanBeauty #NetGalley

Quite amazed with this book. Since opening the ingredients page, found an extensive list of organic materials we can use, some even got pictures on them, which am so grateful to the authors.

And from hair, to body, make-up (even got a chapter of eye shadows *wink*), skincare ....... this book got it all. If you're a health conscious person, or want to start a DIY cosmetics as hobby, or even can't find ingredients that suit you, you can purchase this book and try their methods!

Good Clean Beauty by Caroline & Isabel Berceau

This book gives straightforward easy to read recipes for creating hair, body, skin care and makeup products using natural ingredients. There is a fairly long list of ingredients and supplies that might be needed and each specific recipe provides the items that will be necessary to create the product you have decided to make.

I believe this would be a handy book to have if you live in a place where the ingredients are readily available. Some of the ingredients sounded familiar and others I have seen used in the paints I use for watercolor while yet others were completely new to me. I am not sure where I would go to find some of the oils and clays and such but do think it might be fun to try a few of the recipes in the book at some point in the future.

When I told my husband about some of the recipes he told me that women in the village when he was growing up made their own makeup, shampoo and hair rinses though he is unsure just what they used. I also remember talking to a woman, now in her nineties, that uses rose water on her face daily and her skin is still lovely.

So, finding the right combination of ingredients and creating recipes at home would be less expensive, you would know just what was in your product and it just might be better for the earth. Why? You could reuse the containers that hold the products, no packaging required for the product, no animal testing required, no transportation from factory to store to home, no taxes to be paid...etc.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I try any of the recipes in the book? I believe I might

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This book gave good advice in how tro produce different beauty products that are at least a little bit less toxic and synthetic thant the commercial ones. And while I appeciate some of the recipes, I think that not all the materiales were that affordable or easy to get your hands on. It's said you can do it with btw you have in your pantry, but there were very few recipes that actually proved that point. With the rest you had to buy different kinds of special oils that are rather pricey.

This was a nice book with some good tips. I’m not totally into some of the things that they suggested, but I think everyone could find something here to use.

2.5 - 3 stars

I REALLY wanted to enjoy this book more because I was interested in trying out some of the recipes for DIY makeup and skincare instead of depending on products that are loaded with chemicals and goodness knows what else that I can’t pronounce. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything included that piqued my interest enough to try, despite the beautiful pictures throughout the book.

There was nothing wrong with the book that I could find, I’m just apparently the demographic that this book seems more geared to.

I was really surprised by this book. I’ve read similar books to this (or so I thought), whereby you make your own toiletries. But this went well above my expectations. I thought the raw ingredients would be a bit ‘out there’ being that natural ingredients were being used. I couldn’t have got it more wrong, whilst it was a mix of everyday things like coffee, it also had things like liquid castile soap and shea butter. Which I notice are readily available. The instructions themselves are so simple and straight forward. To be honest it would probably easier just to make some than get some from the shops! Each recipe was very clearly written, and it was easy to navigate through the book. I would recommend this book if you wanted to make your own natural products and as an added bonus make your own cosmetics too, something I wouldn’t have ever considered.

Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion. This is a good resource for anyone who is concerned about all the unsafe chemicals in their beauty products and wants to make their own. The recipes are easy to follow but some of the ingredients could be difficult to find. There is a good variety of recipes for hair, body and face.

This book contained helpful tips and recipes for your homemade beauty care needs. It was easy to read and understand.

Cannot recommend this book at all because there is never once any mention of safety and hygiene regarding those products to be made. This ends up very much like playing with goop , especially the makeup part, with no regards for the health of the skin and what it can do to the eyes and cheeks and everywhere else.

This was the perfect book for starting to accomplish one of my 2020 goals: cleaner and healthier skincare. Tons of tips for taking care of your body while looking and feeling at your best.

I love to buy clean, natural beauty products, that are free from nasty chemicals. I had thought about making my own and when the chance of reviewing, Good Clean Beauty came, i jumped at the chance.
The book is divided up into sections, beginning with Ingredients + Benefits and Supplies + Equipment. The next sections cover, hair, body, make-up, eye shadows, and skin care. You will be shown how to make everything from deodorant, night cream, lip balms and body scrubs...in fact everything you could want for beauty products.
The ingredients are easy to source such as shea and coconut butter and essential oils, as well as staples such as baking soda and lemon juice, oats, etc.
This is a really good reference book and the authors have packed lots of 'recipes' into it. I made their 'So Zen Skin Toner' and was so pleased with how effective and cheap it is to make. Next i would love to make the 'Rare Earth Fragrance'.
However they do need to give some idea of use by dates, as homemade products have a short shelf life.
All in all a wonderful book with great ideas to make at home.

Good Clean Beauty is filled with recipes for natural skincare, makeup and beauty products, written by sisters who started their own bath bomb company when they were teenagers. The sisters, fed up with beauty products being filled with harsh chemicals, decided to share their recipes for natural and organic cosmetics. In theory, it sounds great. In reality, it’s still pretty good, but it’s definitely not without its issues.

I’ve already read one of the sisters’ books, which included mainly recipes for the bath bombs they’ve created, and it’s very easy to see that with Good Clean Beauty, their writing style is definitely improving. Good Clean Beauty included a lot more helpful content, such as how to use or apply each product, tips on using the products and slight modifications that could be made. And a lot less repetitiveness in their step by step process writing. There was a good selection of products and simple to follow instructions for making and modifying each product.

That being said, there were some issues with the book. None of the recipes included expiration dates or use by dates, or even any ways of telling when a product had expired. For young women who have been in the beauty business for several years now, that was a huge oversight on their part. There was also a lot less pictures than I would have expected. In their bath bomb book, almost every bomb had a picture included. Good Clean Beauty had a bunch of products with no pictures. Photos would have greatly increased the pages of eyeshadow recipes!

I think that these women are still young and still coming into their own. They’re obviously very passionate about making the products that they love and I’m sure that as they grow, their writing will also continue to develop.
