I liked this book, although there is really nothing new in it. It does put into perspective that weight loss is a mind over matter situation, but that's easier said than done. Good points in the book and great if you need extra motivation!

Mind Over Weight by Dr. Ian K. Smith is a self-help book about weight-loss strategies.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher St. Martin’s Press, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.


My Synopsis and Opinions:

This is touted as "A motivational guide to losing weight and maintaining success by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Clean & Lean."

The book is broken down into chapters that endeavour to help the reader succeed in thinking about weight loss as a journey of the mind.  Chapters include information on unlocking your motivation, goal setting, finding the right plan, dealing with cravings, boosting your confidence and fixing your relationship with food.  All the chapters are jam-packed with information and  instructions for creating your own plan, step by step.    It is a very comprehensive plan to weight loss.

Note that there are questionnaires and action plans  in the book that do not lend themselves well to those of us who use an e-reader, but they worked fairly well on my computer, and I imagine a hard-copy of the book would be preferable.  Just remember to have pen & paper ready.

There is a great ending entitled Top 10 Thoughts to Live By, and it may be the best chapter of all. 

Overall, it was good, but I certainly did not find anything new in it.  It was a straight-forward book with plenty of tips, and it was organized quite well.  For someone starting out on this journey, it may be just what they need....and I wish them luck.

I read another book by Ian K. Smith in the past that I found very helpful, so of course, I wanted to read this too.

While there were parts I skimmed through, I found all the basic information to be very helpful including the informative quiz at the beginning to see how ready I was There were some other very good suggestions throughout.

Why did it take me so long to read this book? Because although I've been overweight all of my life and I know I need to get some of this weight off, as I began the book, we were in the beginnings of dealing with Corona Virus where I work, and I wasn't mentally ready to get through it. Thankfully I'm in a little better place at the moment, so I was able to finally read it. There are a lot of tips I was able to get from this book. In fact, I just ordered a hard copy because it's something that I'll need to refer to as I attempt to continue on this journey.

If you're looking for an eating guide, this is not the book for you. In fact, there's not a lot of new information found in this book in the regard. In this outing Dr. Ian addresses goal planning and motivation. If you have a hard time sticking to a program or even beginning a program, this book would be helpful for you. Once you get your mind set, then go read one Dr. Ian's other books where he outlines an actual plan that suits you.

Since being diagnosed with a chronic illness the medications caused me to gain as well as the sedate lifestyle so now I struggle with body image, weight, and all of the things that go along with that, The book talks about behavior based therapy and gives very simple steps and journaling techniques you can use to ensure that you have a lasting result.

I highly recommend for anyone who might struggle with their weight or self image .

I know as a sometimes runner - depends on time of year and how disciplined I am - but I've always known that the limits to my capability are always more in my head than in my lungs or feet. It is a constant head-game and not easy, as it takes a lot of reminding myself of that ironically. But the body is pretty much only limited by what the brain says - likewise the capacity for success. This book is not a dieting or food book, unlike others written by Ian Smith. Yes, the focus is still on good choices, healthy eating, and following a plan - but it is more a book about setting goals and reaching them, understanding your weaknesses, strengths, and how to come up with a plan that works. There are interactive pages after each chapter for you to think about how the sub-topic can be applied for you so that you can develop the best plan, and come up with goals that are attainable, and measurable, broken down into tiny successes that cumulatively build on each other. Even if you are not trying to lose weight, the book is a good training path for goals, for reaching them and attaining success in life - but only if you interact with it and make it your own.

I own and have read more "diet" books and plans then I can count. There are lots of great plans out there and everyone is unique so what works for one may not work for someone else.

This is not a diet book or plan per say. This is more like a road map for the journey of changing your eating habits. This book goes more into why we do what we do and how to mentally prepare our selves for changing bad habits and preparing our mind for a change in how we relate to food.

I know what I should eat and that I should exercise but it has always been a battle with my mind regarding my eating habits. This book is a straight forward approach to finding the right diet or as I like to say eating plan for you. At the end of each chapter it has helpful questionnaire that make you think about what you need in diet to be successful. It is like making a customized plan. There is also great information regarding why you eat and is it head hunger or real hunger. A realistic, no nonsense read that can help you.

Mind over Weight: Curb Cravings, Find Motivation, and Hit Your Number in 7 Simple Steps by Ian K. Smith, M.D. It has common sense talk that sometimes isn't so common or maybe I just needed to have it laid out more for me. It gave action plans at the end of the chapters. It work to help you change your mindset about eating. I found this book very helpful.

Yes! This book explains the essential need to succeed in weightless and to keep it off. It’s all about getting in the right mindset and Dr. Ian Smith explains how to do this and make the necessary goals to achieve what everyone wants when it comes to weight loss!

The author's approach of working on your mindset in order to lose weight is one that others have written about, but have somehow gotten it wrong. This author;s approach is easy to utilize and I am looking forward to seeing the results!

This isn't a diet book. It doesn't contain lists of foods that we know we should or should not be eating. Smith doesn't recommend any particular diet either. He DOES help explain our psychological thoughts on food and how we chose diets. He DOES give us an outline to follow, promoting a healthy lifestyle. Mind Over Weight is inspirational. Smith offers motivation, backed by science and psychology to help get us on track. Most impressive is his ability to clearly explain potentially difficult concepts to help us clearly understand our struggle with food and self-esteem and self-efficacy.

his book is a guide meant help you enter the right mind-set for weight loss and stay on track by defining goals and motivation to acheive success.

Overall the book isnt bad nothing groundbreaking in it mostly common sense but a few tools are very helpful in trying to decide what will make the difference this time to not only lose weight but keep it off.

This book is helpful if you track not only your foods but your emotional triggers and motivations. It promotes emotional reflection and changing your mindset for success. It has tips for reducing calories thru substitutes that easily pack on calorie consumption.

This book is best utilized if you truly track the things that not only keep you on track but the things or emotions that derail you. Weight loss and maintenance are such a personal journey and inner reflection is needed for long-term results.

This is not a weight loss plan rather a tool kit for learning strategies to keep you motivated. This will benefit some and not others but it is a book with solid strategies to help you strengthen and correct your relationship with food.

Not a diet book per se, but rather a look at how to find the motivation to lose weight. Figure out what holds us back and learn that what will help us lose weight depends on what’s in our head. That is the path to success.

I am always looking for new books on diet and healthy eating to help me on my path to a better me, and this book really fit the bill. It incorporated your mental health as well as your physical to get the best you you can be.

I liked that this book really addressed how different things work for different people!!
Where I thought, meh!, was the beginning half of the book...it is line he covered all his bases before talking about how he viewed the weight issue.

This book is about getting the right mind-set. helping to make the right goals, and find your motivation so you can stick to your weight loss plan. I felt that it made a lot of good points and gave some valuable tools to help you decide if you really are ready, and if you are then what will make the difference this time from all of the other times you have tried to lose weight.

I have to say I was a little disappointed in Dr. Ian's latest book. This is all very basic information that you can find in a hundred other books currently on the shelf. Skip this one and read one of his previous works.
