Sadly this book just was not for me. This sat on my kindle for quite some time - twice I have attempted to read and twice I did not finish.

Thankyou for the opportunity but I will not be providing feedback on any commercial sites for this book.

A good revenge, trapped theme. I enjoyed the plot and relationship building Elle so artfully leads Charlotte through. Plot would have been more effective with a shorter book - I wanted a more brutal twist.

The premise of this book sounds phenomenal. But unfortunately, I DNF'd it at about 15%. The writing felt so stilted and awkward, and I just could not keep reading it.

A fabulous book which I could not put down. Really easy to read, gripping and wonderfully told story that I would recommend to others!!

What We Forgot to Bury by Marin Montgomery

Charlotte Coburn finally feels safe from her troubled past, she lives in a gated community and has a good life. During a huge storm, Elle knocks at her door asking for shelter from the storm; she can’t place it but she knows Elle from somewhere. Elle purposely chose Charlotte’s house, her secrets destroyed her family, and her life. It’s time that everyone knows the truth. As the story unfolds, and the truth is revealed, who's really playing who?

What We Forgot to Bury is a great psychological thriller that has you questioning everything. The story is told via multiple POV through Charlotte and Elle, and it was written so well. The story is dark, confusing, and so entertaining. The characters were interesting, and so flawed, which kept the suspense going; however, with all the shadiness it was hard to really connect with them. I enjoyed the pace, it was a slower burn novel but the twists and turns made me want to rush through, and that ending? I did not see that coming!

Sorry to say that I didn’t enjoy this book very much. What about the 70% mark I started asking myself why did I even Regis. This was just a huge disappointment for me unfortunately

Review: An Implausible Mess

I don’t even know where to start with this novel. I was really excited to read it initially because it’s one of those stories where you know there’s going to be a revenge plot but you don’t know how it will take place. Well, now I know. It’s a disappointment.

There are just far too many characters in this story. I struggled to remember them all, especially with the changes in timelines. Perhaps if the characters had better chemistry and backstory, it would have made this easier. However, there was just no connection between the characters and it was all so implausible.

And that word basically sums up my entire experience of this story. I was in a constant state of disbelief. Absolutely nothing about this book made sense and there were so many tangents that were completely unnecessary. There was just nothing redeeming about this novel, and I still have no idea what the title is referring to.

At the end of the day, this book was difficult to get through, and I really couldn’t find a single positive thing about it. Hopefully, others have had a better experience than I have, but I’m giving this one 1/5 stars.

It's not often I hand out a two star rating. Two stars makes me sad. I feel deflated. I find no enjoyment in bursting an author's bubble; but, an author and their readers deserve honesty.

I wanted to like this book; but, I didn't. It was S-L-O-W, drawn out, and didn't find its footing until the last quarter. Things ended at a decent clip; but, I'm surprised I hung around that long to be rewarded by my stick-to-it-ness to reach the finish line.

For anyone that has had a bit of life lived under their belt, the twists in this book just aren't that twisty. If anything, sometimes the book is confusing. You question the importance of certain facts. Maybe you even begin to question your own sanity; but, not in relation to your struggle to fit yourself into this storyline. Unfortunately, questioning your sanity has to do with why you'd feel compelled to finish this book in the first place. For me, I'm always trying to finish what I start; but, this book wasn't worth the effort I put into it. 😔

The twists, once revealed, are in and of themselves okay; but, "the bad guy" doesn't come across as flat out evil. Sometimes this would lend itself to a higher creep and scare level factor; but, this book just fails over and over again to fully deliver. There are lies upon lies and too many moving parts/characters to keep this book from being inherently flawed.

From chewed to the stub, bloody fingernails that keep being referenced to a foster mom and foster brothers that are never fully fleshed out or handled to a satisfactory conclusion; to the everyday mess of living, and life itself, to an all together too easy end to the main protagonist's father's release from prison; to an ultimate ending that's happy enough (and yet not) and unfortunately quite predictable.

The whole thing from story, to the writing, to loose ends that didn't feel finished; this book has left me feeling, "blah", "meh", and somewhat dirty? I don't know 🤷‍♀️ I just didn't like it.

Occasionally, the behaviors of both characters require a stretch of the imagination, but the plot is twisty and engaging. There are HUGE surprises in store at the end. My only quibble is that when the revelations come, they strike like a thunderbolt—quick and done. I wish there had been a bit more build up to the final cards being played. It all happens so fast. That aside, this was an inventive and suspenseful read and the ending was jaw-dropping. Well done!

This was unfortunately a DNF for me. Like some of the other reviews I've read online, I did not like the characters much at all in this one and the writing wasn't great. It was kind of a boring and somewhat confusing story that just didn't hold my interest or have much suspense at all for me to stick with it. Sadly, it just felt like too much of an effort to read all the way to the end.

Ugh I'm giving this book 1/5 stars because I DNF it. Very seldom do I not finish a book. While I tried to like it and I know I'm in the minority here, it was it too confusing for me.

Absolutely blown away by this book! It kept me guessing from the very first chapter all the way until the end. I loved that it wasn’t what I expected!

For the most part, while reading this book, I found it a bit hard to keep track of what exactly was happening and where the plot was headed....it was only the last 100 pages that made up for the mostly implausible and elongated plot line with a climax that I did not guess at and which managed to tie everything up together.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers Thomas and Mercer and the author Marin Montgomery for the e-Arc of the book.

Well hello, twists and turns galore!!

This was a story that had me going in so many different directions that I nearly gave myself whiplash while reading it!

This story had lies built on top of lies, with more lies buried underneath!

Nobody knows the whole story. Nobody is who they say they are or claim to be. Everyone wants something they can't have. And of course-everyone is lying!

This story was so fast paced and filled with tension, that I found myself gripping my iPad from all of the suspense, and I was certainly on the edge of my seat the entire time while I was reading.

This was a thrilling read from start to finish, one with a plot and narrative that I could never quite predict.

Highly recommend!

What We Forgot to Bury follows two women; teenaged Elle & thirty year old Charlotte. Both women are haunted by a past that led to to the dissolution of both their lives and a past that interconnects them in the most surprising of ways.

This book was one shock after another. Told from both women’s perspectives, neither woman was all that reliable as a narrator. As a reader I had no idea who to trust and first and foremost I in no way trusted these two women. Showing up out of no where one stormy night at Charlotte’s house, Elle is set on gathering evidence which would prove that her father had gone to prison unjustly due to Charlotte’s testimony of his abuse towards her during their relationship. Charlotte on the other hand tells a horrid story of a viciously abusive ex so.. who do we trust? And Noah? Charlotte’s seemingly perfect new husband has his own secrets he’d rather keep buried himself.

One shock after another, this book leads us in a rollercoaster of thrills and shocks right to the very end!

3.25 stars

Special thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for granting a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, I definitely have mixed feelings about this one...

When Elle was only a child, she saw her dad being taken away from her. Her mother died right after. Almost a decade later, she sees herself on the wrong side of the tracks. Living with a careless foster mom, having very little to eat daily and about to flunk out of school, the only important goal for her is find a way to prove her dad's innocence and for that she'll need to find Charlotte.

"You can bury lies for only so long before the truth surfaces."

Charlotte lives the type of life anyone would be happy living. A good job, a kind and thoughtful husband, a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood… She would be thrilled if it wasn't for the monsters of her past. After she had experienced an abusive relationship, Charlotte is very insecure about her security and tends to be very careful about who she allows in her life.

But that was until Elle appears on her doorstep, asking for shelter in the middle of a tornado alert. Reluctantly, Charlotte lets the girl get in the house without knowing that the encounter was something orchestrated.

"It's always better to have someone owe you a favor, especially when it's an enemy."

After giving Elle a ride home, Charlotte is convinced that there's nothing abnormal about the situation. It's not until she comes back the other day to return something to Elle that she finds out the first of many lies: Elle doesn't live where she said she lived and doesn't go to school where she said she did.

The biggest question in her mind is: Who is Elle? And what she was doing on my doorstep?.

In Elle's mind, though, things are much clearer: Charlotte may play the victim role well, but Elle knows everything. She knows the truth.

Or at least, she thought she did.

I was very excited when I started this book. I liked the premise and thought I have everything figured out from the beginning, but I didn't. And I was good with that.

The book tells the story of two female protagonists with different backgrounds, lives and goals. Because of the past, their paths are bound to connect sooner or later. One of them just want to let go of the ghost that still haunts her even in her new life. The other just want justice to be made so she can get an actual life.

What We Forgot to Bury is a book about the past, the lies we tell even to ourselves and what our misunderstandings can cause on another person's life. It covers themes like: domestic violence, poverty, pregnancy and miscarriage.

A lot of times I had some difficulties in keep on reading because the story was very confusing and a little unrealistic sometimes, but as I was approaching the end it just became more and more interesting. The end could have been more explored and explained, but it wasn't bad either.

3 Things I Liked:
"2- POV" narrative
fair amount of plot-twists
captivating writing style

3 Things I Didn't Like:
the aggressive nature of a "former" abuser being ignored at the end
bad development of the "villain" ( not a good "didn't see it coming" for sure
rushed end

Even though I didn't work that much for me, I would recommend What We Forgot to Bury for those who likes psychological thrillers and I would definitely read something from the author again.
