Author Gillian Andrews https://www.gillianandrews.com published the book “Interdicted Space” in 2019. Ms. Andrews has published seven novels. This is the second in her ‘Enforcement Agency’ series.

I categorize this book as ‘PG’ because of scenes of violence. The story is set in the far future. The primary character is Ryler Mallivan Bell. Months have passed since the first book in the series Termination Shock ended. Bell and his crew have become the Interstellar Enforcement Agency. They are on the starship Nivala and are on their first patrol. None are happy with their mission. They are tasked to transport three unwelcome passengers to Nephealis. Once there, they are attacked by the birdlike Vaers.

Bell and the group are trapped. The young girl Zenzara surrenders to the Vaers to save the others. That sets Bell and the rest of the Nivala’s crew on a desperate hunt for the young girl. She and her abilities are being used to establish wormholes across the galaxy. A development that will drastically change the balance of power. It will also likely cost Zenzara her life.

I enjoyed the 9+ hours I spent reading this 341-page science fiction novel. I like a good space opera and this series fits right in. It does have a few technical glitches. Like mentioning a location ‘west of [the planet] Nephealis’. There are no compass directions in space. Not even an up or a down. Overall though, I enjoyed the novel. This could be read as a stand-alone love, but it would be best to read Termination Shock first. I like the chosen cover art. I give this book a 4.4 (rounded down to a 4) out of 5.

INTERDICTED SPACE is Book Two the Series INTERSTELLAR ENFORCEMENT AGENCY. Feckless hero Mallivan captains the spaceship Nivala on its maiden voyage of enforcement patrol. Commanded to take on unexpected passengers, one is highly prized by the extraordinarily powerful alien species, the Chakrans. Of course, there will be danger...and fecklessness.

Before reading this book I recommend reading the first in the series - it sets the characters and their world in place .

Mallivan Rye and his motley alien crew are back …………. more able to make better decisions he continues to grow in experience ……….. he needs all that experience now that they have been thrown into life and death situations once more . Not all will survive - is this just another facet of leadership - will he be able to cope .
The story line flows well as the crew go from one disaster to the next, building friendships and enemies as they travel .

The books are light reading in the Sci Fi/Space Opera genre and are highly entertaining - I look forward to more of the same in the future .

While I enjoyed the first book, this is the one where Andrews hits her stride. Mallivan has always been good at thinking on his feet, but we see him continue to grow in experience as he continually gets pitchforked into the middle of life or death situations. I like the fact that he finds himself having to cope with the fact that some of those he leads into fights don’t return – the fact that people die matter in this adventure. And we also have Bull Cunningham making a reappearance – the antagonist I particularly love to hate. He’s well drawn. Charming and persuasive, he manages to make his stance sound very plausible – and it’s an interesting change to see the representatives for humanity on the wrong side, morally, which puts Mallivan at odds with his own species…

There are an interesting mix of aliens serving alongside Mallivan, mostly having been thrown together in the former book – particularly featuring young Zenzie, the eight-year-old who is bound to Mallivan by the ‘Savior Protocols’ after he saved her life, for as long as she lives. An offspring of a formidably gifted race, she was frankly something of an unbearable brat in the first book – however, this time around, while she still has her smug moments, there is a major plotline involving her and I was a bit shaken at just how emotionally invested I was in her continued wellbeing. It takes some writing chops to turn around a reader’s initial perception of a character to the degree that Andrews manages during the course of Interdicted Space.

I also liked the fact that Andrews clearly knows her science – in amongst the mayhem, we get plenty of slices of techie information that satisfied my inner nerd, without slowing the pace or throwing us out of the story. The only sticky point in this pleasing adventure, was the info dump right at the beginning, which I could have done without. Once that was out of the way, the pace picked up and I was swept away by the problems of Nivala and her plucky crew. I’m delighted that the third book in the series was published in January – I’ll be getting hold of it. Space opera this entertainingly enjoyable is not to be passed up when I’m this desperate for escapist adventure. Highly recommended for space opera fans – though I’d advise you to get hold of Termination Shock first. Like many indie books, these are very reasonably price and represent excellent value for money. Termination Shock
Interdicted Space
By Gillian Andrews

3 Stars

Introducing the Interstellar Enforcement Agency Series.

Book One – Termination Shock
Book Two – Interdicted Space

Lodged tightly in the Sci Fi & Fantasy genre these books feature a young captain Rye, and his motley crew of aliens from most of the major races across the galaxies.

The story line flows well as the crew go from one disaster to the next, building friendships and enemies as they travel. The captain seems to come up with the best solution on a continual basis to pull the crew from certain death.

The books are light reading in the Sci fi genre and engage the reader to keep turning pages to see the end result.

This is a great book. I really enjoyed it. The characters are well developed and the story is packed with action and adventure. The author does a great job delivering a story with a solid plot and interesting subplots. If you had read Interstellar Enforcement Agency series it will make great follow up to how the last book “Termination Shock” ended. Can’t wait for the follow up book or surely the next book in Interstellar Enforcement Agency series which will pick up exactly where this book ended.
