Very late t0o this review, but I hadn't used NetGalley for a few a years due to work issues and stufying abroad. I'd read this book almost as soon as I received it and I remember it was a positive and rewarding experience for the most part.

I loved the emotional and heart-wrenching description of women at their best and worst, and how others' perception of them can change according to personal circumstances, cultural beliefs, and world ideas getting widely spread. The writing was quite mesmerising as well, especially if you take the relatively short length of the book into consideration. 3 out of 5 stars, but I would definitely recommend it to essay and philosophy lovers, it's got a lot of food for thought.

Algunos relatos me dejaron con la boca abierta y otros me dejaron pensando. Me pude identificar con algunas características de los personajes y algunas de las situaciones. No sabía que pensar cuando termine el primero de los relatos, pero lo disfrute.

I did not enjoy this book or how it was laid out. It made it hard to follow. It was not what I was expecting however the cover was eye catching.

I wanted so much more from this. It was just lacking. With a title like this perhaps it’s just a lot to live up to but it just lacked depth and variety. Still a good read, wont take long and well worth it.

A story collection revolving aroud women, perticularly 6 women. Women in different situations, ages but in a modern setting. I liked few stories but nothing caught my attention much. They were all good but not so extraordinary.
No flaw in writing, narration but just plots or characters were not so gripping.

Thanks to NetGalley for ARC in exchange of honest review.
Happy Reading!!!

DISCLAIMER: The book is given by NetGalley, the author and the publisher in exchange of an honest review. All the review written is not related to any personal issues or connection.

TRIGGER: This book contains several steamy stories.

The book is basically compilation of several steamy stories. I was intrigued by the title “Women on Top,” thinking that the stories written will circulate about women who are sexuality liberated, mentally and emotionally independent. Yet I found out that the characters being portrayed are all too fancy and too good to be true. I do not mean to be fuzzy anyway with that kind of portrayal. Some people might think that, ‘hey, it is overall only a fiction novel!’

One thing they neglect: even an author needs to put a little bit of sense into their writing in order for the readers to be able to relate themselves with the real life. A lady cannot be a princess and a cinderella at the same time. They will always have their lowest and highest point. A feminist as what is mostly portrayed in the novel does not only circle her life around men and men and men. It is okay for her to end up on her own. A man for instance cannot be a total asshole all the time ey?

The pace of the stories is pretty slow. I sometimes miss the surprises and the small bites that come from the story I read. I sadly could not find it in this novel. The ending seems too quick too and I sometimes feel like, ‘Oh, I haven’t reach a climax and the things have come to an end?’

To those who are looking for a light short reading then this novel will fit them well. It is an okay book tho- just not really spicy and bitey!

I really enjoyed this book. It was short and made for a pretty quick read. I liked the format of it being short stories, and it was fun to see all of these different women's lives and how they were dealing with love and their careers. I know that they are short stories, but I would have liked some more detail about the women. I also felt that all of their lives revolved around men, and I felt like it could have been displayed in other ways. I would definitely recommend reading it.

Such well-written stories about so many unlikable people. The characters were so over-indulged and self-absorbed that it was hard to empathize with any of them. I just wanted to tell them to get over themselves. It was a quick read but don't expect to walk away with warm, fuzzy feelings.

“Women on Top” gives you the idea that you’re going to read about women that create paths for others to follow or to I influence people in a good way.

The title fools you as the book cover.

Reading about women that enjoy their femininity, their works, their sex life is perfectly fine, the problem is that this book is about spoiled women that have a lot of privileges in their lives (I know they’re people that have good luck and that can have extraordinary experiences, that’s not wrong, what’s wrong is their personalities). The thing about these characters is that their main purpose in life is to find men, based on their appearance or status; the thing about these characters is that their resilience is proven if one of them sweats.

The stories could’ve been handled better, especially because these are short stories. Here you can find descriptions that aren’t relevant, things that won’t be mentioned again, and even tables attached as if they were essays.

The pacing in general is slow at the beginning of each story and too fast at their endings, which make you feel dissatisfied. They’re unnecessary flashbacks, masochistic love, and some naïve woman. Also, there’s mentioned that the universal feminist dream is ending up with a man and family. Equality? Not in this book.

Both women and men have no depth and lives filled with lies, pathetic people, expensive wine bottles, fashion brands which purpose is to show knowledge in that area somehow. Almost everything is about convenience and s*itty people can still get some kind of reward.

The image of love is wrong, although we all can fall in any of them, of course (masochistic, toxic, stupid). There’s a sentence that made me cringe intensely. A man takes one of these women to an art gallery because it had reminded him of her. That sounds kinda cute, right? And the resemblance turns out to be: “[He took her there] because he was thinking about her vagina.” Add a sarcastic smile here, please. Oh, mother of Thor!

The few tiny good things, a couple of sentences, intertextuality, and plot twists aren’t enough to make this book worth it. I’d definitely not recommend this book to anyone unless, like the author, such person has a fetish for khakis and calves.

I loved this quick read! I thought it was a unique look at women and their experiences. I've heard some negative press that "nothing of importance" happens but I disagree wholeheartedly; even the stories without flashy endings were stories that were highly relatable.

I got this book because of the title. I didn't read the description. I have to say I liked the short stories but i wish there was more to them. I want to thank netgalley, the author, and publishers for giving me a chance to read this book

Women on Top is a book of short essays that you will wish were expanded as full books! Each essay has twists and turns and I felt invested in every main character. Excellent read, highly recommend.

**Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy from NetGalley for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.**

I initially chose this book because of the cover and synopsis, and... that's about it. The formatting of the book is odd and makes it very hard to read and stay engaged. I had expected that because "Women on Top" is listed as an "Amazon Originals Story" that it would be formatted to be readable on the Kindle and corresponding app.

There is an attempt at a social commentary (as noted in the synopsis), but I didn't feel that the women in these stories were "wrecking balls" at our assumptions of women.

While I didn’t love every story in this collection I did enjoy most of them. I appreciate that in a world where so many of us want “The happily ever after” it’s just not realistic. This collection show that. This collection is also geared towards Millennials, a generation in my opinion, that realizes this all to well. Times are changing, this collection shows the good, the bad, the ugly and sometimes a happy ending.

This was a great collection of short stories featuring different women. I enjoyed this because it has variety and the stories are the perfect length to be able to read on a lunch break or while waiting at an appointment. I also liked that some stories were funny, while others made the reader sad or angry. The author was able to transition between story types without the book losing momentum.

Having read Michelle Miller’s collection of short stories The Fairer Sex, I was grateful for the opportunity NetGalley and the publishers afforded me with an Advanced Reader’s Copy of “Women on Top”.
Here are six further short stories written from a female perspective with role and relationship at the heart of each tale with a doze of realism with the romance.
As a father of two daughters I have always enjoyed hearing and listening to strong female voices and this book was not too long to ensure my interest was maintained.
These are modern stories about how women view relationships with men and their different priorities at times. Although there are common themes each account is refreshingly different and even where there is an overlap of issues there is more contrast than comparison. Sufficient perhaps for any woman to identify with some of the circumstances and choices made.
Everyone I suspect will be drawn to different stories here among the lives of these six intelligent and successful women. It would be churlish to pick a favourite or dismiss another as less significant since there is truly something for everyone here and it is short enough to re-read them several times. I guess over time and your own changing situation for which one resonates most. On first reading I liked the surprise in Kate, although there are twists in each along the way. My current preferred story is Ashley’s. She turns a setback into some new found empowerment but then realises she is more than men make her feel. I sense if I reflect seriously on each of the six tales this reflection can be found in each story where the ending doesn’t measure up may also point to where self-awareness went unanswered.

I was drawn to this book based on cover and synopsis alone. A series of short stories about the lives of different women who are out to destroy our assumptions about women? Hardly. There was truly nothing special or shocking about these specific stories. Even the parts meant to be sexually exciting fell short. The frustrated puppy mom at the dog park was a cute story, but that wasn’t enough to bring this to 3 stars for me.

I had high hopes for the book with the description posted about this being a collection of "stories that swing a wrecking ball at our assumptions about women." However, either my assumptions about women (as one) are vastly different than the assumptions the rest of the general population makes or this is just another book about the commodification of women.

As short stories, some of them were interesting and had a Roald Dahl-esque quality. The first two stories, especially, were slow starts. (I admit in the first one, I got hung up on the main character wishing someone would invent camera phones six years after they made their way to the US.)

After that, though, came Jules. A story about a pair of best friends who had no chemistry when they met but because she has no other real prospects--because all women really want is to land a man--decide to date seriously. The regret of all of this only comes later.

Then comes Jocelyn, an aspiring actress who is #MeToo-ed out of the industry so marries an extremely wealthy creep because, again, all women want is to land a man, and then she counts down the time until she can divorce him and get back to acting. Of course, when someone tries to save her -- another stereotypical handsome, muscular man -- she suffers the brunt of that, as well.

And finally, we get to Ashley, who had given up her friends and her career to chase a man across the country (at his request) and after eight years, he tells her he wants to sleep with other women. This story, at least, allowed Ashley to be somewhat empowered in deciding to brush away the tears and sleep with other people of her choosing. Even though it was all meaningless, wild oat-sowing sex, at least it was on her terms. Until the end of the story when the boyfriend decides he made a mistake and wants her back, and she's super excited because he can treat her however he wants and she'll always come running.

Again, as straight short stories, they mostly worked, but as social commentary, we have a long way to go to actually see empowered women achieving real satisfaction in their lives (and not just in terms of whether or not men want them.)

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review. It has not influenced my opinion.

I received this book for free as an ARC on NetGalley (thank you).

I admit that I chose this book because of the cover and the title. Now that I have read it, I am not really sure what 'Women on Top' refers to. On top of their lives? Nope. On top of their relationships? heck no. On top in the bedroom? Uhhh, maybe?

As a whole, this book was well written and easy to read. It's a collection of short stories so it moves quite quickly. I am not sure if it was intentionally funny, but I laughed A LOT, which is great. Due to it being short stories, I'll quickly review each one:

Caroline - This girl is BASIC. I'd skip this one and go right to Kate if I were you. (Girl, put down that Skinny PSL and treat yo'self.) It was written in an essay style with footnotes and was followed with Study Questions. That was weird.

Kate - At first I thought this story was a total joke but by the end, I was SCREAMING. #YASQUEEN

Gwen - This bitch is vapid. Her entire life revolves around men, despite her claims to the opposite and to all men I would like to say "RUN". The unnamed woman at the dog park had me howling. So, there's that.

Jules - I am Jules. Jules is me. No further comment. #Relatable

Jocelyn - "... and maybe that's all a wife was, really, and women ever were - just actresses auditioning for roles in powerful men's narratives about themselves." Girl, please. Maybe the women in this book, sure, but come on.

Ashley - I was super into this one until the end. All Ashley's are liiiiiiiars. #BoyfriendsBeware

Other than that, I am generally just grateful that the author used the words 'penis' and 'vagina' instead of phrases like 'throbbing member'. Oh, but she did use loins. LOINS. Hilarious.

This book wasn't for me, I expected strong female characters at the top of their game and owning their shit. Oh well.

A collection of fun, flirty and sexy stories. Many left me wanting more; yet I was perfectly happy with each their endings. Each story hooked me quickly, and since each one was short it held my attention perfectly. The author was able to capture emotion in so few pages it’s really impressive. If you’re looking for a quick read that has just enough depth to get you thinking and still keep it light and fun, take a chance on these short stories, you’ll be glad you did . #Netgally #WomenonTop
