Fabulous! Outstanding! WOWZA! I know it's early into 2020, but I feel safe to say that Katie Tallo's Dark August will easily be one of my top reads for 2020. Augusta Monet lost both of her parents at a young age. She was sent off to boarding school, and pretty much forgotten by her great grandmother. After her grandmother dies, Augusta is called back home, and stumbles into one of her mother's cold cases which she has some memory of. It's a fascinating read as Gus and her faithful sidekick, Levi, investigate her mother's cold case, all the while someone is nipping at her heels so she does not find her sought-after answers. I hope Ms. Tallo has more mysteries coming soon!

Wonderful crime novel, artfully told in a distinctly different style which makes it more of lyrical literary masterpiece. A young woman, Gus returns home after her grandmothers death and finds hidden files her mother, a police officer, used to pour over when Gus was little. At a loss, Gus decides to follow the clues left behind. Interesting plot, wonderful characters and a really surprising discovery. Will be a bestseller this year!

Gus Monet has drifted through life with a series of bad relationships, but she returns home when she learns her great grandmother has left her a house. It’s in bad shape and comes with a mangy old dog named Levi, but it’s a place to stay. While rummaging through the attic, Gus finds old police files belonging to her mother, a cop who died under a cloud of suspicion. When a body is found that relates to one of her mother’s old cases, Gus, decides to look into the investigation and uncovers secrets that some very prominent people will do anything to keep buried. It’s hard to believe this is a debut novel, Tallo creates strong, believable characters and a web of lies and deception that held me spellbound
