The author's writing made the emotions real and it so felt like i was in the room with her.
If you're having a second thought on this book don't because it's worth the read

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.

This is a very raw, honest account of Yasemin’s experience as an expat in Africa during a terror attack. The memoir outlines the wisdom consequential PTSD and impact of their family’s life following this terrible attack in a brave, honest manner.

This story is proof of how much human beings are able to handle and push through, even when it seems like the entire world is against them. It is an extraordinary story of a struggle with all the obstacles that came after the terrorist attack. When Yasemin was describing what she went through with PTSD, I often felt unease. I always knew PTSD is a hard diagnosis to deal with, however, I don’t think I have ever realised the full consequences of it. I greatly admire her for being able to get through all of this without giving up, because Yasemin continued fighting even when it was incredibly hard.
My only criticism would be the style of writing which made feel like I am reading a description of someone’s life rather than reading a story.

The author's emotional writing of her experience of living through the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kenya. Reading this, I felt the author's emotional journey come through the pages. The writing was vivid and made it easy to understand what the author survived.

Yasemin's story interested me because my family and I were working in Africa at the time of the bombing. Despite being a long way from Kenya, we were in Ghana, West Africa at the time, we still felt repercussions of the terrorist attack. The American Embassy school which my husband and I worked at closed for several days as a result of the attack. Rumors flew throughout our American community that other embassies were also being targeted, which put a lot of us on edge.

So many Americans and local Kenyans died during that senseless attack. What Yasemin and Frank, her husband, went through was horrific. Their experiences were traumatic, however, with the help of counseling, their families and a positive attitude and belief in God, they persevered and eventually got their lives back.

Yasemin tells the story of how and where she and Frank got together and what led them to Kenya, thinking it would be a safe place for them to live and raise their family. She lays her feelings and emotions on the line as she blames herself at times for choosing to live in East Africa. Although the author's writing is emotional and honest, I found it to be somewhat simplistic and choppy at times making the reading a little less enjoyable for me.
