I love a thriller with twists and turns, that has me gasping and shocked with the final outcome. What I do not love is when there are so many twists, that the story becomes unbelievable and over the top. Last One to Lie by J.M. Winchester definitely is definitely standing on the line between love and didn't love because of the sheer number of over the top twists and the unreliable narrator. For me, the unreliable narrator has been overdone and the main narrator was so unreliable that I was both annoyed and confused a lot of the time. While I did enjoy that certain events I did not predict, I think the book would have been more believable and compelling with a few less twists. I will say that the author writes very well and excels at character development. I may not agree with the characters' decision making but I thought they were all interesting, flawed and complex people who I wanted to learn more about. I enjoy Winchester's writing style and would definitely read any other thrillers she writes in the future.

If you love a book with a twist that will make you gasp and become speechless then this is for you! Below is the description of Last One to Lie from Amazon:

Moving to a new city was supposed to be a fresh start for her family. Now it’s a nightmare. Her little girl was supposed to be at day care when Kelsey arrived to pick her up. But they have no record of her daughter ever being there. And to make matters worse, her husband is missing too—he won’t pick up his phone, and the school he supposedly works at says he never accepted their job offer. Detective Paul Ryan knows something’s up with Kelsey’s story. Kelsey’s husband might be involved in their daughter’s disappearance, but the deeper the detective digs, the more inconsistencies he finds. As Detective Ryan tries to uncover the truth, what he finds are more deeply buried secrets that someone clearly never wanted found.

What I loved most about Last One to Lie was the whiplash it gave me when the first twist happened. There were several more twists along the way, but the first one really shook me. I am someone who always tries to figure out what happens in a book, even though I really wish I didn’t. I thought I had this one figured out and was actually going to be quite disappointed if I had been correct; thankfully I was wrong.

I also loved that this book revolved around a real-life parent fear. While this is a devastating topic, dropping your child off at a day care that has no record of her ever being there, it’s what makes books so worthy of reading for me. The more realistic and scary a book, the better. Maybe that makes me a really crazy mom who likes to read awful and horrific things about what could happen, but it catches my attention. I feel connected to the characters and am instantly sucked in. This book had me from at the beginning because I just could NOT imagine.

I also loved that this story was told by multiple perspectives. In books I’ve read in the past that use this format, they normally use the name of the person as the title of the chapter. Last One to Lie didn’t have chapter titles, but I can’t share why. You will just have to read it to find out! It was a unique way to present the multiple perspectives and kept me interested for sure.

What I struggled with in this book was my ability to follow along. I can’t say a ton about this because it would reveal a major spoiler, but there were numerous times towards only the end of the book where I was very confused. I had to go back and try to figure out who was speaking and it just made the book a little disjointed for me. I am one who reads every sentence and wants to understand every little detail in a book and there were a few sentences that really made me stop and wonder if I had been understanding and following along.

In summary, I really do think this is a quick and fast-paced book with lots of twists and turns. This was my first experience with J.M. Winchester and I would definitely seek out more books from this author. Thank you to Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Woooaaaah!! This book! This book sure had my head spinning.

Last One To Lie is pretty crazy. Kelsey goes to the local day care to pick up her daughter when she is informed that there is no record of her little girl ever being there. In shock, she asks for the lady who took her in that morning, Fran who has retired and gone. She calls her husband and yup, you guessed it right! He's not working at the local school like he was supposed to!!

This book in intriguing and the pace never lets up. You are racing through the pages to figure out what Kelsey is upto. The relationship between Kelsey and the main detective is pretty interesting as well. You keep wondering who will leave unscathed.

And just when you think you have it figured there is a final twist. I did end up guessing that twist only because it reminded me of another book. I won't name that book because that will reveal the twist to readers who have read it.

There has to be a suspension of belief at certain times in the story but hey, it's still compelling reading.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending me a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.

Last One to Lie - Another Great Thriller from J.M. Winchester! Last One to Lie is a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and on your toes all at the same time! I absolutely loved the all twists and turns! As the suspense builds, readers will begin to realize much of what they think they know is not what it appears to be. That doubt and uncertainty drives the building suspense of Last One to Lie.

This was a great book that I had a great time reading. The characters were well drawn, and the storyline flowed seamlessly. Would like to read more books by this author

Kelsey's world falls apart when she goes to pick her young daughter up from the daycare in their new town and is told her daughter was never there. Her husband's not taking her calls so Kelsey calls the school where he recently started work and is told he never accepted the job. Detective Ryan gets the call when Kelsey calls the police and he's not sure what to believe, but he's certain Kelsey isn't telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

This novel is at times terrifying, achingly sad, complicated, and twisted. The plot is fast paced. Each character is dealing with serious issues and grief, in varying ways and from very different experiences. If you're looking for a true to life novel this isn't the best option - but it's a perfect book if you want a creepy, over the top, fast paced read.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.

I liked this book! Even though I had some issues with it, I enjoyed reading it. The book was really captivating. I found myself wanting to pick the story up in all the free spots I found during my day. The storyline basically follows Kelsey Jennings, a mother who wants her missing daughter back, and Detective Ryan, who is trying to locate the missing child while also dealing with the old case of his missing sister. I just wanted to keep on reading to find out what happened to the child and the detective's sister. The writing was really nice and easy to follow and the story had a nice build up. However, I did not like every aspect of this book. The quick spoiler free version: I did not like the romance and some actions of the characters felt a bit strange or unreal to me considering the circumstances. If you don't mind getting spoilers, then read along for the more detailed version.

(Spoilers start here!) For starters, the romance in the book felt a bit weird to me. I just could not believe that a police officer would try to get answers by sleeping with someone he knows he can't trust, while also risking his career. Furthermore, I also did not fully understand why Kelsey was so afraid of her twin sister. I get that she wanted to leave her past behind, but it does not explain to me why, when her sister suddenly shows up on her doorstep, she reacts by dropping her keys with fear flashing in her eyes. Later on in the book Kelsey thinks about her sister: ''She's always been so weak, pathetic. I'm almost impressed by the way she's abducted me''. This really doesn't sound like Kelsey should be afraid of her sister... Lastly, after the revelation of Mrs. Jennings not actually being the real Mrs. Jennings, the beginning of the book feels a bit weird to me. In the beginning, Mrs. Jennings went to yoga and has really strong thoughts about the move, like: ''The move to Ellicott City has been a lot more stressful than I expected'' and ''This new job of Malcolm's is definitely the right step for the family. In Florida the opportunities for him were slim''. Here, the twin sister, Holly, has already taken her sisters identity without us knowing. I feel like Holly could not think like this when she has just made the swap of pretending to be her sister Kelsey.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
10/10 would Recommend

One of the twist-iest books I’ve read since Gone Girl or A Simple Favor. This book will keep you on your toes page after page and just when you think you’ve got it all sorted it’ll flip everything upside down for you leaving you raptured.

Seriously, so so so good. I’ll be reading a second time to see what all I missed on the first go!

I was a huge fan of All the Lovely Pieces so I couldn't wait to possibly get approved for her second novel. When it came thru I dropped everything I was doing and immediately started reading. The book drew me in from page one starting out with a fast pace that kept going thru the book.

Kelsey arrives to pick her daughter up early from daycare and finds out she isn't there. They say she was never there to begin with. Who is lying? Detective Paul Ryan is immediately on the case and doesn't know if the woman is lying or what exactly is going on. Told from both their points of view and someone else, maybe, the book takes you through the search for the missing child,if there is one. There is even her husband missing but no one can even vouch if they existed in this town. What is really going on? And what is really Kelsey's past. As the puzzle pieces start to fit together, your realize maybe you have the entirely wrong puzzle to begin with.

This is a book you don't want to miss and I guarantee that you won't guess the ending.

I read until the lines blurred together in the wee hours of the morning, then the characters haunted my dreams. I awoke with a chest tightened with anxiety only to realize it was just a story and in my world everyone is safe... I only wish I could say the same for Kelsey Jennings.

The Last One to Lye is a fast paced thrilling novel. Kelsey Jennings arrives at her daughter’s daycare to pick her up only to find her daughter isn’t there – nor has she ever been there. Distraught she quickly calls her husband, who doesn’t answer. When Detective Ryan is assigned to the case he quickly finds himself pulled into an endlessly unraveling story even he can’t unravel.

This is my 13th book of the year, and is by far one of my favorite 2020 reads. J.M. Winchester writes this psychological thriller with such fluidity you find yourself 100 pages in before you've noticed a moments passed by. She'll keep you connecting the dots and guessing until the very end.

Ok, so Kelsey (our main character) drops her daughter off at daycare and somehow when she returns to pick her up there is no record of her. In fact Kelsey's daughter and husband have been wiped off the face of the earth. He won't answer his phone. Enter the detective Paul Ryan who realizes something is off with Kelsey's husband. Yes its a thriller, yes there are some plot twists, However, some of those plot twists are so off the wall, I found myself shaking my head and almost laughing at them.
The book seemed to be trying to hard to be as shocking as it can be, both with the mystery and the sex (lots of it) its like a thriller meets 50 shades with out the bondage.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC

I liked this book. Parts of it were a tad predictable but I do read a lot of thrillers so that might just be me. I still enjoyed it.

Maybe I’ve been reading too many suspense novels, as the publishing world seems to be filled with them, but this book did nothing for me. I found it read like too many other suspense books mashed together, full of plot cliches, unlikeable characters, and a feeling of who cares what happens to these characters.

HOLY. SH*T.

My mind is blown.

Shattered into pieces.

The more I read, the more drawn in I was. The more I couldn’t stop.

Definitely past my bedtime, so to speak, but I honestly could not put this book down...even for a few minutes.

Incredibly captivating, sinister, thrilling and gripping.

A story I’m not likely to forget. I am enthralled by each and every word that this author has scrawled upon these pages. A psychological thriller that contends up there with some of the best.

I don’t want to even try to summarize it because anything I say could very well shed light onto the whole story, but hot dang what a read.

I was puzzling my way through the twists and turns as the story got more and more twisted the closer you got to the end. Literally up until the last lines, my brain struggled to catch up and put all the pieces into place..because every thing I thought I knew kept getting turned and flipped upside down.

Absolutely incredible.

After moving to a new city Kelsey drops off her daughter at daycare and when she comes back to pick her up she realizes that her world has suddenly changed, she works with the police to try to find her daughter and she ends up trying to seduce the detective in a weird attempt to hide who she really is? A lot of the Detective chapters were pretty much him fantasizing about her about not knowing who she was but still having sex with this "stranger".
The book was entertaining to read but definitely corny in the sense where all the "twist and turns" were not really a shock, the chapters aren't listed as the character either so they can be a bit hard to follow.

Thankyou netgally and publishers for the early release of this book.

I was absolutely riveted by this book. Totally different than anything I have read before and a shocking twist of an ending. Highly recommend this mystery/suspense/thriller!

This was a twisted, crazy good thriller! Identical twins that were separated at a young age and brought to two different foster homes lived very different lives.. Years passed and one adult twin decided to find the other twin. But that twin did not want to be found. That is where this fun, twisted ride begins. It starts when Kelsey Jennings reports her daughter Mikayla missing. Police and Detective Ryan follow the clues to find Mikayla and it leads to many confusing dead ends. Things are not as adding up....there are secrets and lies to be told!

Kelsey just moved to a new city. After yoga one day, she went to pick up her daughter, Maikayla, early from day care, and they don’t have her daughter. The day care said her daughter was never there and they woman Kelsey dropped her daughter off doesn’t work there anymore. Detective Paul Ryan was appointed on this case. Not only was Maikayla was missing but also Kelsey’s husband, Malcolm, is also missing. Is this a case of parental abduction? In the meantime, Paul discovered that Kelsey is not who she said she is. She has a dark past that is also involved in her sister.

The pace of the story was good, and the storyline kept me reading. I think there are great twists; however, there are twists that was written as a diversion, such as the character Fran. The diversion made little sense to me and I thought was unnecessary. Each chapter was written in a different character’s voice. However, without labeling at the beginning of the chapter, which character was speaking made it frustrating to read. I didn’t know who was speaking until the second paragraph. It mess with my reading flow. It was also hard to differentiate the characters at the end, especially with such a huge twist. Putting all that aside, the story was great.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this fabulous ARC in exchange for an honest review.
