This was a classic Mike Lupica sports story- you know what to expect when you're going in, but it still manages to be a great reading experience in surprising ways. One of my 8th-grade students found the read engaging and very much appreciated the mystery of trying to find out what was happening with the main character's grandfather and the secret he was keeping. If you are looking for more books to add to your classroom library for your middle grades sports readers, you can't go wrong with this title!

This is a great story about what can happen when a secret is revealed.

In this case, Lucas learns that his grandfather's vagueness about his earlier life was really to hide a bad decision he made in college.

Told with plenty of basketball play, the story shows Lucas coming to grips with the fact you may not know all about a person's past but it shouldn't negate your relationship completely.

With the underlying sports component, this is a great book for upper elementary and middle school.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this advance copy.

My 10 year old, basketball loving son enjoyed reading this book. I'm looking forward to getting him more books by the same author. He said he really liked the sports stuff, but he also liked the different relationships.

He gave it 3/5 stars.

Middle grade readers who play basketball will love this story. There is lots of technical talk about basketball plays for them to enjoy. The story line is good and the problem is unique. I didn’t enjoy The Turnover as much as I enjoyed Heat, also by Lupica, but it was still a good sports book.

Another fine work by Mike Lupica. It belongs on the bookshelf at home, in class, and in the school library. I would be glad to add a hard copy of this to my collection.

Our pre-teen loves Mike Lupica and was super excited to read his May 2020 release The Turnover. He found this book super engaging and I appreciated how Lupica shines at sharing relatable and thoughtful topics while connecting it to sports which makes these super readable for his target age group. This was quick and engrossing read and he highly recommends it. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced copy.
