This excerpt is a great look into this vast universe. I am interested in continuing this series now because it is historical and fantastic there seems to be the beginning of a great love story and this is an awesome mix of all the types of stories that I love.

This is one of my most anticipated reads of 2020 so it was nice to get a little sneek peak to tide me over until I read it. Matthew, Cordelia and James are going to be in my top ten character in the Shadowhunters universe probably by the end of this and I have only heard good things so far.

Great excerpt! Couldn’t wait to get my hands on the full book and it did not disappoint. Thanks for the preview!

Reading this excerpt has me excited to read the complete book. I am working on reading the series prior to starting Chain of Gold, I love Cassandra Clare and anything to do with Shadowhunters.

Successfully got me even more excited for the book!! I can't wait to learn more about the kids and I'm really interested to see how the first direct next generation interaction is going to be!

I loved this excerpt. She does a great job. I can't wait to read more about Cordelia. Cordelia was the first wielder of Cortana and I'm just jumping up and down to read a story about a strong female character.

Ive been waiting for this book for 3 years now. Three long years and as soon as I knew the due date for this book, I immediately pre-ordered. This excerpt was not enough, it was so good! All these new characters were just perfect and I wanted to read more. I know for a fact that I will have a new obsession. Cassandra Clare's books were so good, I read her entire shadow hunters series in a month, that included the Clockwork series. Her books send you into another world and I cannot wait to read the entire book! I may have to read it slowly, at this rate it may be a long while before the next one comes out.

I have received this ARC excerpt from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lowkey, was super excited to get a little bit of this book. I liked it so much that I actually went out and got the book so I could enjoy the whole thing. Haven't dipped into yet but I am super excited to do it whenever I get the time. There are so many books out there that I need to get my hands, eyes, and ears on!

Other than that, I'm loving the next journey that Cassandra is giving me. Heck, I'm already thinking of diving into all of her previous series once again before the next book of this series comes out. It doesn't help that I miss all the characters and their stories already.

Ugh, the torture!

Cassandra Clare's new book Chain of Gold has beautiful cover artwork and is beautifully detailed. This is a mini review on the excerpt from the book. The story takes place in Edwardian London. There is great imagery and Cassandra makes me feel as if I am right in the middle of the story where it's taking place. She hooks you early and holds your interest. The excerpt hints at further romance , drama, mystery and action.

I loved Chain of Gold and I can’t wait for the sequel! I especially loved the characters of Cordelia & Alistair Carstairs, Matthew Fairchild, and Anna Lightwood. I’ll absolutely be recommending this to my young patrons!

RATING: 5/5 STARS

So basically, Cassandra Clare wrote another book and I instantly fell in love with all of the characters... what's new. I'll be in a perpetual hangover until the sequel comes out. Don't mind me, I'll just be bringing up these characters in normal conversations like they're people I actually know for the unforeseeable future until I can get some answers about what happens next to these precious beans. Why does the agony and heartbreak feel so good?

❝ She supposed it was not the most romantic thing in the world to say that every time she saw James Herondale she felt as if she’d been attacked by a waterfowl, but it was true. ❞

Please be aware this will be a mini-review since it’s for an excerpt and not the full book. With that said, let’s jump into it!

Despite being a little behind on Cassie’s series (catching up as one of my top goals for 2020), I was totally excited for Chain of Gold! Not only did I have a pretty covered but I’m a huge Cassandra Clare fan so I knew the book was bound to be good.

One of the elements that I loved right away was that there were siblings as main characters. Family (blood-related or family you choose/make for yourself) is pretty much a big theme in every Cassandra Clare book it seems, but I never get tired of it. I love the strong bonds between characters and we definitely see that again and Chain of Gold.

Another thing that caught my interest, in the beginning, was the mystery of the boy in the forest from the prologue. I was hooked right away and 100% invested in finding out more. Plus, there seems to be something strange about Grace as well. I have a feeling there will be plenty of romance, betrayal, and drama in this book.

And speaking of drama, I thought Cordelia’s family situation definitely added the potential for drama and tension. With their father about to go on trial, the pressure is on Cordelia and Alastair to save their family essentially, which is a great burden on its own.

One thing that I think kept me from fully immersing myself in the story, however, was all the history between characters. There were characters constantly being mentioned from other families that I’ve heard before (Blackthorns, Herondales, etc.) and I spent a lot of time being distracted trying to figure out/remember who was related to who. At this point, I think Cassie needs to include a glossary at the end of every book haha!

But overall this excerpt showed me a promising start to a new series and some interesting characters. I can’t wait to read the full book and fall in love with them like I did with everyone in The Mortal Instruments!

Chain of Gold takes place in Edwardian London after the events of Clare's previously released trilogy The Infernal Devices. Cordelia Carstairs has just arrived to London with her mother and brother. Though it seems she has arrived to begin her training with her future parabtai, Lucie Herondale, her true mission is to establish relationships with influential shadowhunters. It's the only way she knows to save her father from persecution or to protect herself from the embarrassment of his impending failure if she doesn't save him.

The dilemma is she has already fallen in love with James Herondale, son of Will and Tessa Herondale and Lucie's older brother. James it seems has already promised his heart and his life to someone else. Will Cordelia fight for her love or simply look away and seek another partner? Does it even matter when there are much darker, more dangerous happenings in London?

Review:

I loved this book so much!! It was the first shadowhunters book I've actually read, and I'm already planning out reads of the other series. Cassandra Clare KNOWS how to write. I was immediately sucked into the plot of this book. With every single page she left me wanting more, wondering what was going to happen next and who was deceiving whom. The story took so many twists and turns. I simply couldn't put it down! She did a wonderful job describing scenery, words, actions, etc. that were first introduced in her previous novels. So it's definitely easy to drop right into the shadowhunters' timeline with this book. I 10/10 recommend it to everyone!

Pros:
-very descriptive
-easy to read
-constantly evolving story line (it kept me intrigued until the very end)
-plenty of loose ends for the next novel (though it might be frustrating to not have all the answers!!)

Cons:
-occasional repetitiveness
-over explaining settings (I don't need to know every single decoration Tessa Herondale has changed or not changed since Will took over the Insitute)

I absolutely loved this book! It kept me on the edge of my sheet throughout the whole novel! Cassandra Clare does it again by crafting a great tale that keeps the reader engrossed until the next novel. My standout characters would obviously be Matthew Fairchild who reminds me of Will Herondale but with a much more tragic turn,

I've read most of the shadow hunter series books and I really liked this one compared to others! I like Tessa, I really liked the clockwork books not sure if it was the time area or that I liked the characters more or that it was the first books I read but im looking forward to the rest of this series out so I can reread them both together!

There was times in this book when I found myself bored but not much compared to the last one I read, but I also always end up putting off reading these books until I have to finish them quickly lol so that may be it

This is a book I really do want to reread with the clockwork series though, since I feel its been awhile since Ive read them and don't remember all the characters as well a I would if I did and would probably get more out of this book!

“Tell me the name of the shadow that is always hanging over you. I can become a shadow. I could fight it for you.

Cassandra Clare always leaves me wanting more... needing more of her stories and her incredible ability to describe love. The Shadowhunter world is huge and all the stories and the characters are connected and this just made me want to pick up City of bones and start the series all over again! I have been waiting for this book for so long that I was afraid it would have disappointed me, but the atmosphere is exactly the one we had in the infernal devices and the characters are absolutely awesome! Of course every time Will Herondale made an appearance my heart skipped a beat and I honestly would have liked to have him in every page, but I really loved his children and I adore the very cute and caring father he has become. James and Lucy have both angelic and demonic blood and so they powers no one has ever seen. Cordelia Carstairs is one of my new favorite badass heroines, she is fierce and proud but also ready to do everything for the people she loves. As usual Clare makes very clear how the lack or the loss of love can destroy you and makes you do terrible things (just consider Tatiana), but she introduces thoughts about real sicknesses too, in particular alcoholism. Indeed Matthew drinks a lot, just not to think about what he has done to his family. Honestly I thought he would have faced it but I guess I need to wait for the next books. Just to be clear, the best character of this book is Anna Lightwood and I think I am desperately in love with her. She is such a strong character who lives the life she wants without fear in a time when appearance is everything. I really wish I had her strength and her self-confidence. Alastair is another rare treasure, I really think he is on the road to redemption and I can’t wait for him to find the real love (and of course I already have a ship for him 🙈). oh and for goodness sake, please, just say to Charles to SHUT UP, I really couldn’t suffer him anymore 😂.
