Wow. What to say, as usual, when it comes to Oates?? This book was beautiful, terrible, remarkable, and I could n't put it down. I never wanted it to end. The characters are so well-developed, you feel like you know each one. I could so relate to Jessalyn, the mother, and they way she was with her children. Each child was so different in personality, and their interactions with each other were fascinating. Whitey is the character that is larger than life, the glue that holds his family together. The first half of the book is mostly about the family and their relationships with one another, the reason that Whitey is in the hospital and ultimately dies, is kind of the secondary story. The 2nd half of the book deals more with the reason that Whitey died. All in all, it is Joyce Carol Oates at her best, yet again.

Fantastic book! It begins with a violent act, and ends with tenderness. In between is the story of a large family whose father dies, and how they all deal with the aftermath and move on, or not. The deeper you delve into this family, the more you realize the tentacles of depravity extend from within each family member, sparing no one. I didn’t care for most of the characters, but they were presented as so human and fraught with imperfections it was hard not to want to cheer them on. Ms. Oates has a remarkable way of weaving society, race, and human dynamics into a extremely believable story. Even at around 800 pages, it was hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating book and would highly recommend it.

Storyline great, Writing not a fan of. Very flowery, almost poetic, definitely not my favorite.

Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free,it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.

Joyce Carol Oates continues to impress with both the wide range of writing she offers, and her insight into the human condition. Night. Sleep. Death. The Stars. is yet another powerful work that gives Oates the opportunity to explore the heart and show us motivation, alongside complication. Such is life. Highly recommended.
