I really enjoyed this short excerpt and it only made me more excited for the actual book which I found is the authors most ambitious and impressive novel to date.

Unfortunately, I think I have outgrown my love for Sarah J. Maas novels. There have been quite a few over the years that have left an impact and those that I keep going back to - but those are more for sentimental reasons rather than for relatable writing.

I know this book has been our for a while but the huge book itself
Left me intimidated! I can say I finally pushed through that fear and once again Sarah is incredible! Can’t wait for the second one!!

First of all, I want to say that I am so sorry it took me so long to review this. I joined Netgalley when I was much more stupid and didn't take reviewing seriously. That changes now. I loved this. The whole reason I joined Netgalley was so I could see more of Ms. Maas! I thought that the beginning was very info heavy, but I didn't mind it. I thought that the characters more than made it interesting and I was excited to learn about the world. The ending of this excerpt does an amazing job of hitting you in the gut (and I even knew some of what would happen because of the synopsis!) I thought the writing did a phenomenal job of putting you into Bryce's head and having you feel what she felt, be the feelings physical or emotional. At the end of the excerpt, I was so so excited to get the book when it came out! I love this and I love Maas! She is one of my favorite authors. Everyone, go get this book!

Honestly the story was a little disappointing I was expecting more Throne of glass main character then A court of throns, I probly won't read the sequel which is very disappointing because I love Sarah J Mass.

This was my first Maas book and I loved it. Immediately I went back to read her earlier works. This was just the excerpt but I did buy the book as I needed to know what happened!!

Sorry for late review--

I did complete this book in its enterity. If was great. However, the first 90 pages were slow. I get that--- to build up placess and certain characters.
Overall, I look forward to book 2! And hope for an advance read. This time I will leave earlier review.

Thank you

I'll he honest, the beginning didn't really hold me. Maybe SJM is just not for me any more. However, I still recommend this book for those interested. I am definitely the odd one out here.

I'm normally always excited for a new Maas book, but I found myself underwhelmed with this preview. I wasn't as drawn in or attached by either the plot or characters this far. I do have high hopes that it'll turn around though. But based on this excerpt in only giving it a 3 star.

I think I exploded a little bit inside when it was known that Sarah J Maas was writing an adult urban fantasy book. And I think that's because adult urban fantasy is one of my all-time favorite genres and that I absolutely adore Maas' other two series, ACOTAR & Throne of Glass. I was both nervous and excited and after I finished this beast of a book I can honestly say it was absolutely amazing, but it was not without it's problems and flaws.

Now CRESCENT CITY aka. House of Earth and Blood (Note: I am not calling this HOEAB. It was always known as CC and CC is even in big huge letters on the cover. I guess when book 2 comes out it will be known as CC2) is about Half-Human, Half-Fae, Bryce Quinlan who's close friends were all murdered by a demon and when the murders begin again after two years she is selected to help solve this murder mystery with the help of Fallen Angel, Hunt Athalar if the two of them don't kill each other first.

I loved the characters! I had so many favorites! Bryce Quinlan was just such a bad-ass! Sassy and taking no shit from anyone! Adored her! Bryce and Aelin would totally be besties! And Hunt Athalar! I fell for him the moments he was introduced. Like, please marry me! I loved his lethal and dangerous vibe, but once we got to know him...He's a total softie! I love the whole bad-boy on the outside and cinnamon roll on the inside persona! Sprinx & Lehabah are my babies! I fucking adore them. I swear they made me a big puddle of mush inside my heart! Ruhn, Hypaxia, Declan, Tristian, & Tharion! Like I said, I had so many favorites!

“No,” she whispered, closing her eyes. She put her hand on her chest. Over her heart. “I was waiting for you—in here.” Hunt couldn’t stop his own tears then. “I was waiting for you, too.”

If I had to say what this book represented as a whole I would say friendship, love & healing. And it was a beautiful message. Especially Bryce's & Danika's friendship. How Bryce was basically broken and dead inside. And Hunt? He was broken in a way too. Bryce and Hunt both healed each other. And I'm calling it right now! Those two are endgame! I know Maas' screws around with us and her characters relationships, but after what Maas' said on her Q&A on youtube & what these two went through in this book, they went to hell and back, you cannot tell me they will not be together in the end! They are OTP! End of story!

CRESCENT CITY like many adult urban fantasy books has very intense worldbuilding. I am still not sure that I completely understand everything that was thrown at me. For example, there are 4 Houses and each House has a set of different paranormal creatures that belong to each House. A few of the diffrent creatures are Fae, Vampires, Angels, Mer, Witches, Sorcesess and much much more... And even though you have these creatures you have to do something called the drop to become truly immortal. It can be really hard to keep track of. There is still so much more to this world that I would love if we had a guide for this world.

A few issues I had with this book was the alpha-holes of the books. Maas decided to make fun of her other series with the whole mates and alpha males thing. In a sense it was like a joke, but the joke went on for way too long and I just became so fucking annoyed with it. Throughout the book you seemed to get the males who are 'alphas' who got what they wanted and took what the wanted and what you wanted be damned. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but it was way overused and happened too much that it seemed so unrealistic!

“Isn’t it exhausting to be an alphahole all the time? Do you guys have a handbook for it? Maybe secret support groups?” “An alpha-what?”

Let's move on to the alpha-hole term. Again, this was put in to make a little fun of Maas' other series and I know it was apart of Bryce because it was a part of her family past, but the term just annoyed me. And the head of the different creatures or Kings or Queens, whatever, seemed to be more into themselves, about what they wanted, that it seemed to be all about the power play with them. It should've been what was right for their people, and the world. When you are a leader you don't put yourselves above everything.

I was able to get into CRESCENT CITY fairly easy, but I wasn't able to fully get into it until chapter 5 or 6. That was when it had my complete attention. After saying that, did this book really need to be 800+ pages? I think it isn't a good idea to have a first book in a series this long. I am assuming Maas' is relying on the fanbase from other other two series. But me who did like this book did have problems with it being this long. I like murder mysteries, but come on! It dragged on for so long!

So yeah, I definitely had my problems with the book, but I did enjoy it as a whole. CRESCENT CITY is a commitment at 800 pages, but it was worth it. I loved the characters and after the last 200 pages of the book and that fucking epilogue I see epic things happening in the next book. And second books in Maas' series tend to be my favorites.

I kind of can't believe I even have to leave a review for an excerpt. I regret downloading excerpts most of the time because they're more trouble than they're worth, and this is why.

This excerpt was enough to get me interested in this new series. I was on the fence, because I am not ready to commit to another really big book in what could be another really long series by Maas. I have enjoyed ACOTAR and Throne of Glass but after the third book in each series, I just wanted it to end. But after reading this teaser - and another thing I'm not such a fan of are the more contemporary fantasy/fairy plots - I decided to buy the book and take a chance. Still have to dive in so pending a full review, but the introduction was enough to whet my appetite for sure.

I was so excited to read Crescent City, I downloaded the excerpt the night before it was published! I completely forgot by the time I finished the book. Bryce was an interesting character, she reminded me of a less cheerful Mor, who is my favorite character in the ACOTAR world! I think this is Maas’s most complex world yet, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series! The only thing keeping this book from being five stars for me is that I felt like the plot dragged at several points in the middle of the novel.

Love love love! I have no idea how I made it until the book release date after reading this excerpt.

I have mixed thoughts on this book. The story and the plot was 5/5. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and kept me guessing. This was my third SJM book. I started Throne Of Glass but never finished it. This book caught my attention because the genre and plot reminded me of my own WIP, Mark Of Genesis.
Now, the thing with this book is it is labeled adult fiction. The content, thus, was less appropriate. There was a lot of swearing and some sexual content I had to skip over because I'm not into that content.
Once I finished the book, I had to take a moment and question whether this book was worth reading. I'm not scared of the 'f' word. I won't use it but I won't panic if it shows up in a book because I know it exists. However, the sexual content was way too out there for my taste. If it had been YA I would've DNFed it ASAP.
I learned a lot about writing while reading this book but this has some very heavy adult content I caution people to be aware of. I give this book 4 stars for the story and not for the content.

I have a love/hate relationship with Sarah J Maas but I loved this excerpt and I have ordered my own copy.

Absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to read the rest of this book and see where things take us! Bruce and Danika are awesome and the story seems such a cool mix of modern and fantasy!

I've been looking forward to this release for a long time! Due to its length, it took longer than I expected for the action to get started and to get into the story, so I struggled a bit getting into it. I’m so glad I persevered though because the payoff was more than worth it. I read a mix of the audiobook and physical book, which I think helped me when it came to learning the world-specific terminology and concepts. Once I got past all of that, I was really able to sink my teeth into the characters, the story, and the world. And, of course, Maas’s writing is always beautiful. This book absolutely wrecked me; I was uncontrollably sobbing at certain points, which is how you know she was doing something right. If you haven’t read this book or are hesitant about it, just be patient with it, because it will be worth it!

Admittedly, the new world, terms, and characters felt like they were thrown at me pretty quickly. When I got about 20 pages in, I actually started the book over because I wasn’t sure I understood what was happening. It was also a bit jarring for me to have a mix of this very specific terminology along with such modern terms and expressions that we see in our everyday lives. I’m glad I had both the audiobook and the physical book because I feel like the audiobook helped me better understand what was happening. Still, once I got into the book and figured out the terminology, I did really enjoy it! I just wish the beginning hadn’t been quite so slow.
