Another outstanding novel from Daisy Johnson. Johnson tackles a lot in a fairly short book. This one may be quite polarizing, even more so than Everything Under, but I would not be shocked to see it making some longlists once it’s released.

Three and a half stars - I liked the book, and the end was absolutely chilling, but overall I felt like it took too long to get to the big twist/reveal (I figured out what was going on pretty much right away). I usually like a good unreliable narrator, but I couldn't settle in with this one - then again, I realized later that this wasn't so much of a psychological thriller as it was a horror book (in my opinion). I think I would have appreciated the book more if I'd thought of it as horror all along.

All that said, the ending absolutely redeemed the book and made it a worthwhile read. Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for a review.

This book was too confusing. Kept jumping around and was hard to follow. I had so many unanswered questions at the end.

The cover is AMAZING. LOVE! I have to admit I didn’t care for the prose and finally gave up after several days of forcing myself to read. I just couldn’t get into this one.

I really liked Sisters by Daisy Johnson. This is a fairly short and quick read. It's full of suspense and dark tones throughout. Lots of family dysfunction. I would definitely recommend!

I received this ARC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 stars

I love the style of this novel. It is unsettling, the narrators are all either unreliable or at least suspect, the tone is deeply sinister, and the sense of foreboding is insidious. The connections between Settle House, with its sordid history, the various events it has contained, and its Grey Gardens/_Repulsion_/Poe-style mirroring of the characters' mental states through its dilapidated and deteriorating condition, are well devised and add complexity to the work.

While these many aspects resonated with me, I struggled with the ending, which felt predictable and a bit drawn out. I'd have liked to hear more of that final perspective (intentionally evasive so as to avoid spoiler markers) and experience more surprise/twist/growth(?).

At the conclusion, I still feel unsettled and disturbed. Readers who are in the mood to feel these sentiments - or who can live with these feelings in exchange for some pretty intriguing style, tone, and setting inclusions - should dive right in.

This book cover is amazing and the actual book is delightful to read! The author did an amazing job of creating a book centered on family dysfunction. My only complaint is that this is a short read. I cannot wait to read more from this author!!
