Tim is involved in an accident and has amnesia and can’t remember his past. The past has him working as a CIA agent that he retired from or the death of his wife. Drinking and not knowing what is going on he volunteers for a program but gets into something different. A good book.

I struggled to read this, as I found it very hard going, however I did actually enjoy the story. Well worth a read, even if it does take a little perseverance!

The Adults in the Room
by Jeffrey Mechling

3 Stars

The book lacks tension, with a slow start. The tension does build over time, although it lacks the fluency of a good story teller.

I found the story line unrealistic. Retired CIA officer Tim Hall drinks heavily to forget. With a fractured memory he is thrust into a deadly mission that could decimate American politics. But unsure if can trust his own mind, his dangerous new role may be patriotic—or treasonous.

The Adults in the Room is the first book in the Tim Hall Mystery series.

Still suffering from the car crash that killed his wife and stole his memories, he volunteers for a medical trial to recover the mysteries of his past. But after he wakes from a blackout lasting days, he’s convinced two sinister men are hunting him down…

Relieved by the familiar face of his biker girlfriend, he’s shocked to learn her true identity and the devastating secrets about his accident. And soon he’s swept up in a deadly mission that could decimate American politics. But unsure if can trust his own mind, his dangerous new role may be patriotic—or treasonous.

Can Hall fill in the blanks of his fractured memory before his choices turn fatal?

The Adults in the Room is the first book in the high-octane Tim Hall Mystery series. If you like stunning revelations, deep state conspiracies, and a touch of romance, then you’ll love Jeffrey Mechling’s mind-bending thriller!

Tim is a retired Social security government work in Baltimore. He was transferred from the CIA, after a road accident lead to amnesia and the loss of a large number of years of memories. This includes all of his time serving in the CIA, and much of his memories of his late wife Pam. Pam was killed in the road traffic accident.
He has been well locked after with health care and pay but when he tried to find out about his past, he is met with obstruction and dead ends. Life in Baltimore is extremely mundane, until he starts to date the owner of his local bar Mary Ann, a biker chick. She is fiery and just what Tim needs.

A chance conversation with the regular at the bar, leads to Tim, seeking out Experimental Stem Cell therapy. He believes this may reverse his amnesia, and possibly stop the effect of Dementia, he believes are starting to appear.

After mysterious treatment, he finds that his health has improved in a number of ways. His memories start to return. Thing become much clearer. Strangely he start to encounter people who he doesn’t seem to know but are strangely familiar. He is being watched. Leading to a compulsive page turner of the story.

A gripping narrative, which races ahead. There are many other books set in the murky world of the CIA. This is different, in that Tim is not Jason Bourn, he is not a fictional augmented machine. Tim is very much real and could the bloke sat with you in the bar. He is an agent that you can get under the skin of. Set in the present time and the plot rings very true with current events. They are all actually quite possible and believable.

The Story moves forward and is certainly not predictable. It moves with pace and interest is held from beginning to end. There is scope here for a brand new franchise and I am really hoping that we see further story’s set in this world. In Summary a gripping and pounding page turner. Completely recommend.

The novel is the beginning of a new series which shows promise. I hope that in future entries a more polished products appears. The characters seemed two-dimensional to me, and they were made to be loved or hated. The storyline was too predictable. I hope that the next books in the series create more depth of character and allow the reader to fill in some of the gaps in plot development

A CIA canal to kill a president who, while it named, sounds remarkably like the present occupant of the White House is the plot that drives this pedestrian thriller. It's all made murkier by a former spy with amnesia, the wife he thinks us dead, the strangest bar maid in recent memory, and a few other diversions. Mostly it's an exercise in wish fulfillment for one side of the political divide and a cause for teeth-gnashing for the other
