This is a story about legacy. Lizzie Moon left her hometown where nine generations of gifted healers had lived and taken care of the land of their ancestors . She learns that her grandmother has died and goes back to settle the farm, sell it, and return to New York. But things change as she prepares to do that. She discovers a journal her grandmother left her to help her make her decisions and possibly embrace her own special gifts.
This could have been a predictable book and a so so read. But its not. Some threads you may find predictable - - the romance Lizzie finds. But its a wonderful told story, well written, you learn to love the characters and while you may guess how its going to end, there are twists and turns to get there. I loved how the characters interacted in this book. My only regret is that i would have loved to see Althea alive and being her own character. But that's not part of the story is it.? Not your typical "witchcraft" kind of book, but enough magic to entice you if this is your thing, and enough "normal" to make it a good read. Definitely worth your time. Thank you to NetGalley for this proof to read!

Loved it!! I do love books that have a bit of magic in them. The Moon girls were full of magic. Enjoyed the story, writing style and characters. Loved reading about Lizzy and her family. Thank goodness Althea was there to raise Lizzy because her mom did not know how to be a mother. Rhanna pretty much abandoned Lizzy. Salem Creek was definitely lacking in their police force. They never properly investigated the murder of the Gilman girls, but were convinced Althea was guilty without any evidence. Loved finding out what really happened to Heather and Darcy and was a bit shocked when the truth was finally revealed.

Definitely recommend the book. Besides magic and a mystery to be solved, the book is full of love, friendship, forgiveness and family dynamics. Definitely look forward to reading more books by the author. Love the cover of the book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Lake Union Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book left me breathless. In tears, but not sad tears. Though it is a very emotional story and one that will make you cry in many places. It will also make you laugh out loud and in other places make your skin crawl. There is a lot going on in this story that will keep you turning the pages and wondering who did what. It’s a fiction with a mystery and some thriller all combined to make a story that is actually filled with true “magick.” From the first page to the very last word you will believe in magick.

This is the story of Elzibeth/Lizzie Moon, her grandmother and her mother. It’s also the story of two girls who were murdered and put into the Moon Girl’s pond. Althea, Lizzie’s grandmother was the one blamed for these teenaged girls death. Lizzie’s goal is to prove her grandmother didn’t do this. What she goes through to prove this will leave you one the edge of your seat. You will be holding your breath and at the same time filled with anxiety for her. Lizzie is on a mission and will not let anything stop her.

This book is about many emotions, love, sadness, loss, life, murder, mystery and magick. Throw in a few laughs and you have the perfect story. One that will keep you wanting more. You won’t want this one to end. It’s a heartfelt story of many women and the magick each one has. The story of a mother and daughter trying to find their way to each other. Of a grandmother who has the power to give them a push even from beyond. It’s not a paranormal by any means. It’s just the story that needed to be told now. One that will make you believe in things you never thought possible.

Thank you to #NetGalley, #LakeUnionPublishing, #BarbaraDavis for this ARC. This is my own heartfelt review.

A big 5/5 stars and a very high recommendation.. Read and enjoy.

This is a very compelling story that captured this reader. I enjoy the author's complex charcters and well crafted story. .Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.

Lizzy left Salem Creek and its background in her past when she left. The witch background of the area and the rumors left many women in the past subject to ill treatment. and some mysteriously disappeared over the years. When her Grandmother dies she returns to settle her home and affairs.. She wants to leave right away. When he finds her Grandmother's journal she finds that murders may have occurred and she wants to try to solve the mysteries behind the rumors.

I enjoyed this atmospheric mystery . The setting is done to perfection and I like Lizzy as a smart investigator that does not take no for an answer. It was a enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

The Last of the Moon Girls is hands down my favourite read since joining Netgalley. As a fan of magick, romance and mystery, I was instantly drawn to this book. The writing flowed so beautifully, the characters had wonderful depth and the suspense was maintained perfectly. My favourite parts were the pearls of wisdom that Althea imparted to Lizzy via The Book of Remembrances. Truly, I find nothing wrong with this book and I gladly say that Barbara Davis has become an instant-buy author for me. It deserves all the stars! So if you are a fan of the mystical like myself, get yourself a copy of this book right now!

I really enjoyed this mix of mystery, family drama, and love story with a bit of "magick" thrown in..

The Moon Girls are taught from a young age that their singular goal in life is to have a daughter -- without a husband -- and to raise her to follow in the Moon legacy of strength and magick. Elzibeth (Lizzy) Moon wants nothing to do with that life, and leaves for New York, not planning on returning. However, when her grandmother, Althea Moon, dies and bequeaths her Moon Girl Farm, she plans on a short trip back to collect some personal mementos and put the farm on the market. Instead, it stirs up old resentments regarding how the town treated her family -- and especially her grandmother -- after two teenage girls were murdered eight years earlier. When Lizzy starts to ask too many questions, bad things begin to happen...

I really like the premise of the story. It's not necessarily original -- we've all read stories about small town fear of strong women living alone and accusing them of causing problems with their witchcraft -- but it develops into an enjoyable story. While I thought the Andrew-Lizzy storyline was sweet, I liked the relationship between the women -- Lizzy, her long missing mother, and Evvie, her grandmother's friend and roommate, even more, and that was the big draw for me to want to keep reading.

The mystery part was fine, but all signs pointed right where they should have. And the police-chief-wanting-to-be-mayor part was fine, but maybe not the most believable as to why the murders weren't investigated more when they actually happened.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the arc of this book. It has not influenced my review.

The Last of the Moon Girls by Barbara Davis is not quite what I expected from the description. Moon Girl Farm has been in the Moon family since Sabine Moon purchased the property in 1786. It has passed from mother to daughter through the generations and now Lizzy Moon, as far as she knows, is the last Moon girl. Lizzy left the farm eight years after a scandal rocked Salem Creek, New Hampshire and the Moon family. Two teenage sisters did not make it home one night. After the sheriff’s department received an anonymous tip, they dragged the lake on the farm and found the girls who had been missing three weeks. People believed Althea Moon, Lizzy’s grandmother, killed the girls despite the lack of evidence. Lizzy is notified that Althea has died leaving the farm to her. Lizzy comes home to sell the farm and collect the family journals. After reading a special journal Althea left for Lizzy, she sets out to learn what really happened to the teens. Lizzy was a conundrum. She went eight years without visiting her elderly grandmother who raised her. All her life all Lizzy wanted was to be normal (highly overrated). Lizzy has wanted nothing to do with the farm or the scandal (as we are repeatedly told). But then she doggedly pursues the truth. I did enjoy the magic, the information about herbs and perfume, and Lizzy’s soapmaking. I was disappointed that the romance was so prominent. I wish it had taken a backseat to the mystery and magic. Andrew Greyson, Lizzy’s love interest, had cared for Lizzy since they were kids. He was always there when she needed assistance. They are now both back in town and Andrew is working to fix the greenhouse. I did not like Andrew rescuing Lizzy because I would have preferred Lizzy saving herself. My favorite character was Evvie Broussard, the keeper of bees and jewelry maker. I thought the story was predictable and it moved along slowly. You can foresee how the story will play out after the first few chapters. There were various storylines all happening at the same time which muddled this book. Lizzy, the farm, the magic, and finding herself would have been enough. The epilogue wrapped up the book with a bow. The Last of the Moon Girls is a good escape novel. Some changes would have taken this book to the next level and made it great.

Fun Story, Could Have Done Without The Epilogue. This was one of those moving yet fun and quirky stories about a person fleeing their home town as a teen only to be drawn back to it in the face of tragedy. The quirkiness was fun, and the magick was downplayed just enough to arguably keep this out of "paranormal" labels even while being present. (And the honeybee scene... that was cool. Freaky, but cool.) Overall has some similarities to the 2019 book The Scent Keeper by Erica Baurmeister, and that is not a bad thing at all. (This book takes a more paranormal tack, that one takes a more science based tack.) Really the only quibble I have with this book is the epilogue, where things are tied up maybe a bit too tidily for the overall tone of the book. Excellent work with a compelling mystery and fun characters - even if I did get at least part of the mystery solved by about the 36% mark. Though the ultimate unveiling was more of a surprise. Very much recommended.

The Last of the Moon Girls was written by Barbara Davis, and the Kindle Edition of this novel was published on August 1, 2020, by Lake Union Publishing. I was able to obtain a copy of this book by reviewing an ARC on NetGalley after requesting it.

The central plot of the novel focuses on the young heroine Elzibeth Moon, who goes by Lizzy, who has always been considered different among her peers. She returns to her hometown of Salem Creek after her beloved grandmother Althea dies, and she is burdened with deciding the fate of Moon Girl Farm. She left the farm eight years ago, when she could no longer deal with the accusations and gossip that her grandmother had murdered two young women and dumped their bodies in their pond. Upon her return, she realizes that the rumors have never died down, and it is not going to be so easy to sell the farm and go back to her life in New York. With the help of Evvie, Althea’s closest friend, and Andrew, her handsome next-door neighbor whom she has been trying to forget, they set out to clear Althea’s name, once and for all.

This is the first novel by Barbara Davis that I have read, but I will certainly be trying to read more of them after this one! I quickly fell in love with all of the characters, who were well-developed with their personalities and characteristics that set them entirely apart from each other. The plot was also well-developed, and none of the twists and turns seemed unbelievable. I was also surprised, to say the least, to find some recipes of remedies mentioned at the end of the book.

I will rate this book 5/5 stars. There were no faults as far as I could tell, and I was eager to finish the book, having to remind myself that I shouldn’t read when I had other things to do. I would recommend this novel to lovers of mystery and romance, with a touch of magic to go along with it.

A lovely story of second chances, family secrets, and learning to love both yourself and others. The shadow of murder hung over Althea, Lizzy's grandmother, but she was always sure Althea was not responsible. So was Andrew. Lizzy, whose full name its Elzibeth (note the spelling), left Moon Girl Farm and didn't intend to come back. She's built a life as a perfumer but then Althea dies and leaves her a legacy she has to explore. Althea's notebooks contain more than she ever expected. No spoilers from me but this was a well done mystery as well as a domestic drama of sorts. I didn't need the romance with Andrew (I was more interested in the family) but it didn't detract from the story for me. thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Davis has a nice storytelling style that made this a very good read.

Mystical and moving, this is a great novel that will have you turning pages quickly to see what happens next. Beautifully written with memorable characters that will stay with you even after The End.

When she arrives she is greeted with her grandmothers best friend, who has kept traditions going when they were unable to track Lizzy right away.

Upon arriving home she begins digging into the investigation from years ago they pushed a dark light over her grandmother. Years before her grandmother had been accused of the murder of the Gilman girls who were found deceased in her pond.

The lack of investigation during the beginning of the case no other suspects were investigated, but Lizzy is determined to find the truth.

I loved this novel that transcends genres - part murder mystery, part family drama, part historical fiction, but everything magical full of love! The writing is hauntingly beautiful, easy to read, and well researched.

The story opens up with the discovery of two missing young girls’ bodies in the pond and the double homicide investigation points to blame Althea Moon.

From that point on, the writing continues to build up as Liz, Althea’s grand-daughter discovers not only the mystery behind the girls’ disappearance, but more importantly her journey in discovering her true self as one of the mystical Moon girls through letters written by Althea educating her about the herbs and its healing powers. With this knowledge, Liz is able to build up the ailing Moon Girl Farm to what it once was.

I love the story of self discovery, family, love and second chances. Davis delivered a gut wrenching and captivating story.

Consider adding this to your TBR you will love it!

What is it like to be the last of the Moon girls?

Lizzy wasn't sure, but she was the last of the Moon girls.

When her grandmother passed away and Lizzy found a journal from her, she knew she had to go home to settle the estate.

It turns out that along with the estate, she is going to try to settle the rumors that her grandmother had something to do with the deaths of two teenage girls eight years ago.

The farm Lizzy lived on with her grandmother when she was a child brought back so many memories when she returned.

It also gave us a glimpse into the life Lizzy lived and the love that was there.

There was a love from way back but not the love of her family. It was a love that Lizzy had always resisted, and his name was Andrew.

We follow Lizzy as she tries to solve the mystery of who really did kill the Gilmore sisters.

Ms. Davis outdid herself with THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS.

We are treated to her beautiful pull-you-in story telling skills and storyline, a strong female character, a mystery, family ties, and love.

THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS is a sweet read that includes suspense and a little bit of magic.

This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Last of the Moon Girls is a beautiful story of family and forgiveness and a wonderfully comforting read in turbulent times like those we are now living in,
Lizzie Moon has built a life for herself, far away from the farm she grew up on, Moon Girl Farm, tended by her family for nine generations while they worked as healers in the community. As soon as she was old enough to leave for college, Lizzie left and never looked back, until the day she receives word that her beloved grandmother Althea, the woman who raised her when her real mother Rhanna left, has died and left the farm to her. Returning to Moon Girl farm forces her to face some dark moments from not just her own past, but that of the town. She is forced to relive her embarrassment and shame over the actions of her mother ,who turned to drink and drugs in a very public way, while also contending with the anger of some of the townsfolk who have long believed that Althea was involved in the deaths of two young girls whose bodies were found in a pond on the farm. When Lizzie decides that the last thing she can do for her Grandmother before selling off the farm is to try to clear her name, she does not realise that she is poking a hornet's nest that could have very real and very dangerous consequences. As if her life was not complicated enough, she faces a growing attraction to her neighbour Andrew and when her estranged mother appears on the scene chaos ensues.
I really enjoy multi- generational stories like this one., and I loved the wisdom of Althea, who we only really get to know through other people's memories of her , and her writings in her Book of Remembrances , it takes a lot of skill to craft such a well rounded character in this way, I also liked Lizzie, even if I did find her stubbornness more than a little frustrating at times. The writing style is simply beautiful, I found myself making note of several passages that really spoke to me. The story of the Moon family is wrapped around a well crafted mystery which is solved over the course of the book, giving it a real page turner feel. I found myself so invested in the story and these wonderful women ,that I read the book in a single sitting.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher all opinions are my own.
