Susan Straley began keeping a journal as a way to keep friends and family informed the three-month trip she and her husband George took around the USA in 2016. Her journal became her first book, Trippin’ With George: Diagnosis to Discovery in 10,000 miles, and I was pleased to receive a copy of the second book, The Journey Continues: Alzheimer’s Trippin’ With George from Books Go Social. And NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.

The second book’s cover subtitle adds “Over the bumps with friends, family and community support,” which sums it up nicely. Susan was initially encouraged to reveal information about George’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, symptoms, progression of the disease, and how she was doing as a caregiver, along with the story of the travel. During that trip, she “shed the strong urge to run away from the care-giving role she has been given when George was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.” That is something that resonated with me, and I expect with many family members and friends of Alzheimer’s patients. .

My husband’s sister has recently been diagnosed with sudden onset Alzheimer’s and I plan to recommend this book to every member of his family. Susan’s friends, who encouraged her to continue to write, should know how grateful many people are for her writings. As she put it, “It will be so helpful to others who have loved ones with dementia,” they said. And wow, were they right. Five stars. It isn’t “great literature,” but it is full of valuable information, heartfelt emotion, and it really helped give me a boost when I needed it.

This is not a text book reference on Alzheimer's Disease. It is so much more. The author is honest and raw. This book is heart-warming and heartbreaking. I have been a caregiver several times in my life so far and I saw so many things that reflected my path. I really liked this book and feel it is a worthy read.

Description
Susan and George, married for 40 years, have just returned from their 10,000-mile-Last-Hurrah road trip. During their travels Susan has shed the strong urge to run away from the care-giving role she has been given when George was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The readers of her travel blog encouraged her to keep writing when she got home.“Your journey is not over,” they told her. So Susan kept writing the friendly, open posts that seemed more like a letter from a friend than a computer post. She recorded life moments honestly and openly. The readers would open their mailbox periodically throughout the day, anxious to dive into another update that would have them laughing, or crying or just shaking their heads. Now you too can take the journey with Susan and George. Learn how they found fun, joy, and fellowship despite living with progressive dementia symptoms.

My Review
Heart-wrenching journey of George who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer. It is a very well written story that gives you a glimpse into the life of the person diagnosed and the loved ones.

This is not a book about the disease, but rather the journey. Definitely hard read, but well worth it.

I received a complimentary copy of The Journey Continues Alzheimer's Trippin' with George from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Both heart-warming and heart-wrenching! I have sooo many thoughts about this book! First of all, it hits very close to home for me as this is a VERY magnified look into what Alzheimer's truly looks like. Secondly, this is an intimate account (maybe too intimate at times!) from the point of view of the amazing caregiver and wife of George, the Alzheimer's sufferer. Susan is a strong, giving woman who had been very blessed to have made the friends she and George had made before his diagnosis, and she in turn will be a blessing to those same friends in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

From the moment I started reading this book I could relate to so many things. We are caregivers for my MIL and it was good for me to read and relate. See the real, raw reality others go through. We are not alone.... I plan to seek out the first book also.

As a caregiver new to the role of taking care of a partner with dementia, I found this book helpful. Someone who has been there before me and can guide me down the path I am forced to take is appreciated. I appreciate how she was able to find joy in daily situations and how she coped with challenges.

An open, honest and encouraging look at life with a spouse with dementia is presented in this journal , which features a lively blog post format, enhanced with family photographs. I wanted to read this book because while I do not have a family member with a dementia condition, I do have friends who are living this situation, so I wanted to learn more.

This book, the second one about life with husband George, focuses on the years when George is at a moderately severe level. While this could be a sad and depressing time, the author makes the most of their daily lives. The author, Susan Straley is an upbeat and positive person and her love for her afflicted husband shines through. She makes sure that each day is active and pleasant for both of them.

It seems like it helped them to live in Florida, close to The Villages. This provided George and Susan with nice weather so they could be active outside, make lots of friends, and have access to hobbies as well as dementia support services. They were able to continue their love of recumbent bicycle riding almost to the end of George’s life.

So what did I learn from this book? That while every day life is challenging, in the midst of sadness the author found joy. I learned that friends are vital- they can help with errands, bring meals, visit, and most important of all, show love. I found out that it’s possible to continue to travel and live a companionable life. Thanks to the author for sharing her life and her love for her husband with readers.

I received a digital review copy of this book from NetGalley and BooksGoSocial. This is my honest review.

I think I was expecting more of a reference guide to Alzheimer’s and dementia, but found more of a journal About a George and his highs and lows with dementia.....still a good read since we are dealing with this at home with my dad

An honest look at the ups and downs of life with dementia. This book is a series of journal entries written during a husband's decline. As a family member who has taken care of a loved one with dementia, I appreciate the author's candidness and willingness to share the ugly side of dementia. Each experience is different but the tips given to the reader should be held close, like gold, because there will be a time when you need it. I marvel at the amount of outside support the author had and what a help they were -- a safe spot in a very irrational world. Her village is full of tremendous, loving people.
