Witch Thriller

The issues start with Daniel’s death, mainly because his ex is the daughter of a witch.

This witch has three close friends who are the women in her coven.

One of those friends is Daniel’s mother.

From there, all hell breaks loose.

Do they find out who killed Daniel?

This story is about a current-day witch hunt. The town becomes leary of the witchcraft that so many of them benefited from in the past.
The plot is suspenseful, not only the actions but the emotions are strong. Can friendships survive such an ordeal?

Lies, judgment, grief, and deceit push friends and neighbors to come together to punish those they see as the evil ones.

This story is as much about relationships as it is about secrets and witchcraft. And the ending, just wow. This book has it all.

💕Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing this ebook for me to read and review.

Sanctuary, a quaint town in Connecticut, has its own set of rules and protections for witches, just like anywhere else in the country. Sarah Fenn and her daughter, Harper, call this place home, where Sarah runs a small business and Harper attends school. But when a tragic incident at a graduation party casts suspicion on witchcraft, old fears and prejudices resurface, threatening the peace they've built. As rumors spread and tensions rise, Sarah and Harper find themselves at the center of a modern-day witch hunt.

Late to the game, but I got hooked on this gripping tale of mass hysteria and witchcraft, especially with the upcoming series adaptation. The story unfolds through multiple viewpoints, focusing on key characters like Sarah, Harper, and Abigail, offering a nuanced exploration of friendships, parental instincts, and the fragility of social order. Set against the backdrop of Sanctuary, the author skillfully navigates themes of fear, loyalty, and betrayal, crafting a compelling narrative that keeps you guessing until the morally ambiguous yet satisfying end. Can't wait to see this play out on screen!

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for this ARC!

I'm not really sure how to describe this one without giving too much away, except to say that the plot and the characters are compelling and intense. I started this with the thought of reading a bit before bed but ended up bingeing the entire 400-plus pages in one night and thinking about it well into the night.

We follow multiple characters but mostly Harper and her mother Sara. Sara is the only witch in Sanctuary, everyone is aware of witchcraft and it even has its own form of government with a whole lot of rules and regulations.
When a fire breaks out at a local party, one of the kids is found dead. At first, it seems like it could be accidental until someone from the party comes forward claiming Harper killed Dan with witchcraft. However, witchcraft is passed down genetically and Harper didn't get that gene. This starts off a twisty rollercoaster of a ride, that had me frantically flipping pages well into the night. Let's just say there is no end to the amount of suspects who would want this kid dead, or who want to wrongly accuse Harper of the deed. Every time I thought I had a handle on what was happening and who was behind the dead the path would take a hard left and I would have to rethink everything. Everyone in Sanctuary minus a select few starts turning on Sara and Harper, and it makes you see how easy it is for the mob mentality to take over. It was truly frightening at times. Ten OMG that ending was a complete and utter surprise and completely perfect. This is one that I would definitely be reading again.

I don't typically reread books, but I fully intend on reading this one again before the end of the year.
This was something completely out of my reading comfort zone, and I am so glad a friend of mine recommended it to me.

The premise of Sanctuary is exactly my kind of book, a witchy story and lots of drama. There is suspense and interesting twists that make for an compelling mystery. Friendships are tested or torn apart as the story reveals itself. The end of the book was quite atmospheric and dramatic. The part of the story that was hard for me to connect with was the aggressive pursuit of Harper and the unnecessary escalation of events. That is my own personal issue, but it did affect my enjoyment of the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher the the opportunity to read Sanctuary. This is my honest review.

MY REVIEW:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I really enjoyed this book. The tag line mentioned what would you get if you mixed Big Little Lies and the 90's film The Craft.....this addictive thriller, and they are right!
I LOVE The Craft. It's one of my fav Halloween movies, so of course I knew I'd love this book. I've been really enjoying YA thrillers lately, so I was definitely sold.

This book gave me a whirlwind of emotions. I did guess who the "killer" was, but I did NOT see the twist at the end coming! There's so much to unpack in this book. A police procedural element, mob mentality, backstabbing, witchcraft, sexual assault, death, and loyalty.
I don't want to say too much, just that if you're intrigued, which you should be - read it! You won't be disappointed!

QOTD ❓️⁉️❓️ Did you ever go to parties in high school? Did anything bad ever happen at any of them?

AOTD - no my parents put the fear of God in me, so I never went to any parties.

I was excited for the concept of this one, especially when compared to Big Little Lies and The Craft! Unfortunately it just was not for me!

Thank you Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for the eARC of Sanctuary! All opinions in this review are my own.

I am happy that Sanctuary was offered again on NetGalley because I can't believe I haven't heard of this book before!

When the golden boy dies in a fiery accident, the town of Sanctuary slowly starts to unravel as more and more secrets are revealed. I love how this story is told from multiple points of view because it allows for the impact of secrets to be heightened. The short chapters kept me flipping pages as I had to find out what was going to happen next and who was telling the truth!

I recommend Sanctuary if you are looking for a dark and twisty mystery! I also look forward to watching the show!

I had no idea what I was getting into with this one. But - I’m glad I did. This is not my normal genre. Witchcraft entangled into the modern world. 4 friends a small community and witchcraft make a great read

Wow! This book was so good, but also terrifying? Not in a horror content kind of way, though it had to do with witches, but more so in the chaos and hysteria that ramped up, and how realistic that portrayal actually is. It’s in our own history with the Salem witch trials. People fear what they do not understand, and throw in the threat of endangering their children? Yikes! I could not stand Abigail— the mother who incites the mass hysteria after her son’s murder. She was beyond reason and a portrayal of those who refused to be swayed or live in deep deep denial. There were many plot twists in here, and it was interesting reading the different POVs, especially that last chapter, which pretty much tied everything together.

Thank you Sourcebooks Landmark for the copy, I will definitely be checking out the new show, Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale on AMC+ after having read this!

This wasn’t for me. I didn’t enjoy the characters or the story. It just felt lack luster to me

I had such high hopes for the book. The synopsis and cover in my opinion was better than the actual book itself.

Anytime you label something with the movie The Craft, I'm going to read it and this is a very worthy comparison. This is more than just a book about witches though, this is a story about the morality of these characters. I am excited to watch the show that is coming out. I am interested to see if they captured the complexities and depth that ran throughout the novel.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark for sending me a copy of SANCTUARY. This book is out now.

The idea of this book seemed like a slam dunk but it ended up just being a dud. There were a lot of issues I had with this book, too many to lay out in a review. The characters were fine, there were too many and it was hard to out myself in any of their shoes. This book wasn't a bad book but I think it was overhyped and eventually let me down because it didn't live up to its Big Little Lies meets Practical Magic at all.

Big Little Lies, but make it witchy! I absolutely enjoyed the heck out of this book. It was such a good look at humanity, friendship, loss and small communities. I loved the way witchcraft was built into the modern world. I thought it was really unique and clever. This book was filled with a lot of twists and turns, but once all is said and done, what actually happened makes sense and you realize it was sprinkled in there all long. The characters were all very well developed. You’ll certainly empathize with all of them, but there’s a few that absolutely deserve what came to them. I also enjoyed the look at the mob mentality, especially in a small town and how easy it is to turn on friends and neighbors when you don’t understand them. I cannot wait to see this as a show on AMC+. I think it’s going to be so interesting and compelling. Highly recommend this for fans of neighborhood dramas and witchcraft.

I'm going to have to give this one a one star.
What started out as a cool mystery of a popular highschool football player's tragic death, turned into a slow crawl to find the details.
There were multiple POVs, I've lost count of how many, and most of them honestly felt pointless.
The town also has a coven of witches, that while it was a unique touch, felt very out of place with the story.
I quickly lost interest in the story and the characters. I didn't really care for any of them and I didn't feel the need to get any of my questions answered.
I can see this working out better as a TV show, but as a book I found it lacking.
I'm grateful for the opportunity, and hope this book finds it's right crowd. Unfortunately, that is not me.
Thank you again to the publisher and the author. I hope you find success.
Happy Reading and Blessed Be.

Sanctuary is a small town in Connecticut which, like the rest of the country, has legal protections and rights in place for witches. Of course there are also rules and restrictions on witchcraft and what is legally permitted for witches to perform. Sarah Fenn and her daughter, Harper, live in Sanctuary where Sarah has a small business and Harper goes to school. The small town is their home, where they have made a life and have a circle of friends. However, when a graduation party ends in tragedy with one of the town’s most popular and well-known teens dead, the old prejudices and fears about witchcraft begin to re-emerge. What will happen to Sarah and Harper if there is a modern-day witch hunt in Sanctuary?

I am late to the party on this one. Sourcebooks Landmark kindly offered me a digital copy to review, now that the book has been made into a series about to premiere in January! Wow – I just loved this modern era cautionary tale about mass hysteria and witchcraft. The novel is told from multiple perspectives and has a large cast of characters, but the primary ones are Sarah, Harper, Abigail (as the mother of the dead teen and one of Sarah’s friend circle) and Maggie, the detective in charge of investigating the teen’s death and whether witchcraft was actually involved. The real magic in this story lies in the relationships between the characters, where we see the complex friendships between the women in Sarah’s coven, the lengths that parents will go to defend and protect their children, and the conflicted decisions they must make between family and friendship. The author very effectively demonstrates how quickly common sense and public order can deteriorate in the face of rumours, superstition and fear. The ending is morally ambiguous but also satisfying.

Many thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark and I am definitely watching this in January!

This was such a clever and unique plot and I found myself enthralled from the start. This was extremely well written and I was surprised this was a debut novel, I will be looking out for more from this author

Very interesting and fast paced read that feels like you’re reading a classic book like practical magic, with a dark mystery at the center and witches and witchcraft all about. I liked the setting of sanctuary, and how it was written and described by the author. I can see why people would want to live here. I also like the use of the witch hunt metaphor literally and figuratively in the story, it really helps move the plot along and gives us a fun tale to follow.
