2.5 stars.
The cover is beautiful, it almost looked like it was painted.
Charles and Dalton had more chemistry together, than with Alexandra. I said was i said.

I received a complimentary copy of This Day is ours in exchange for an honest review. This was a great book reflecting on the Revolutionary War error. I loved the story, and the way it was written. As a reader, I felt immersed in the era, and could easily see the story unfolding. Alexandra and Dalton had a rough road, and I wasn't sure how their happy ending was going to happen.

The only negative was the length of this story. It was very long winded, and I found myself skimming through most of the war discussions and fighting scenes. It was well written and interesting, but I wanted to read more about Alexandra and Dalton's story. Even skimming, I don't feel that I missed anything of sustenance.

Overall, this was a a book that I would recommend to friends and family.

This was a very good historical romance. I learned some things about The Revolutionary War and that is always a good thing. The romance was good as I really liked the characters. It was an enjoyable read.
Many thanks to BooksGoSocial and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

An epic novel of the revolutionary war. Alexandra Pennington. a widow who is a Tory and Dalton Jameson a Patriot are deep;y in love and the war is on. It takes a while for them to realize they are meant for each other no matter what others think or try to do to keep them apart. The story was good but maybe a little too much is taken up with the battles themselves. The story does present the good and the bad on both sides. It was a tough time for all. The Patriots did prevail and today reading the book will give us a sample of what they endured to free this land.

Ugh. That is the first word that comes to mind when I think about think long-winded utter disappointment of a novel. I'm super irritated not only that I wasted so much time on this story, but also because of the promise that it held in the first place.

I was totally sucked into this story - at least for the first 1/3 of it. When Dalton was secretly masquerading around as Jack Flash. I enjoyed reading about his exploits, I enjoyed getting to know his friends. Heck, I even enjoyed Alexandra and her ill-tempered betrothed (although not going to lie I nearly quit reading the book altogether when he shot a horse for his own stupidity and mistreatment of the animal). Hands down one of my favorite characters quickly became Alexandra's former brother-in-law George. I loved his no-holds-barred attitude and the way he leapt to the defense of his loved ones.

However, as soon as Dalton went off to war? Gone was the story that had been told up until that point. Instead, the reader was treated to long-winded, graphic accounts of the battles he encountered. To the point that it was obvious this author spent a lot of time doing her research. And normally? I wouldn't have found this to be a problem, but in this instance, there was just so much information dumped on the reader that honestly? I lost interest. To the point that I found myself skipping over the mentions of the battles altogether, resuming only when I saw Alexandra's name again. Not to mention the fact that I counted NUMEROUS instances of Dalton cursing the pending arrival of the "blue coats" in those early battles. Uhhh buddy, I would be more worried about the RED coats if I were you.

I think a lot of this novel could have been saved by a strong round of edits. Not only to clear up what I mentioned before, but also to deal with some other glaring problems (like the fact that in his letter to Twiggs, Dalton mentioned Twiggs should take extra care of Dalton's horse Mercury specifically even though Dalton had taken that horse into battle with him). I also think it would have helped the author condense her battle scenes to a point where they were more interesting. I'm sorry but hearing "READY, AIM, FIRE" repeatedly gets old quickly.

Sadly, although this is one of my favorite time periods, I couldn't bring myself to really become invested in this one mainly due to the long-windedness of the battle scenes. It's my opinion that this author could have made better use of her research by making this a series and focusing on different couples and different battles. I definitely would have kept Dalton and Alexandra as the first as there is a lot of good build-up to the war, but unfortunately this plot was spoiled by too many details.

This book is a great book to read right at the Fourth of July as it is all about the Revolutionary War. It is full of action as you learn about the Patriots against the British during the difficult times in the history of this war. The characters are strong, warm and loyal on the Patriot side and ruthless on the British side. I am reminded as I read this book of the Outlander series which I loved. This story touched me in the same way and I hope she will write more of these books. The heroine is beautiful, kind and a strong-willed woman and when it comes to Dalton, well Sigh, what woman wouldn’t swoon over this guy?
I feel the author was true to history as she informs the reader about the different battle sites and hardships the fighters endured. I learned a lot and I always enjoy a book when I feel I am learning something. It was a long book, about 550 pages so it was not a quick, but I was totally involved and hated for it to end. Thank you Gretchen for a great read.

This Day is Ours is such a good historical romance! I am a sucker for Revolution Era stories and this one was no exception. I loved the characters and the writing!

Such a great story! Highly recommend!

Gretchen Jeannette's This Day is Ours didn't work for me.

The narration felt overly described and detailed, a fact which caused the pacing to stagnate and hindered both character and plot development.

I respect the readers who enjoyed the author's writing style, but the novel was not a good fit for me or my tastes.

This was an epic book. It was too long but I persevered and cannot say that I enjoyed it. I did learn about the American war but it was too long winded for me. Sorry .

Before I start my review, I would like to say that I am very grateful to have received a free copy of this book. It was not my cup of tea, but other readers might enjoy it. However, it would have been unfair not to fulfill my part of the agreement, so here is my honest opinion.

This 562-page-long novel was a trek. The writing was daunting and I skimmed entire chapters (and still managed to need over two weeks to finish it). The author sure did a very thorough job researching facts, but all the info is constantly dumped on the reader. Plus, nearly every noun was accompanied by one or more adjectives. I got too tired of the writing style by 20%.

There was very little development in the characters department. They were nice at first, I guess, but they felt flat as sheets of paper as the story advanced. I could not relate to the female MC because she was whiny (one of those women made to come across as super-strong but whose attitude usually brings problems about) and I didn't get attached to the love interest either.

The 3rd person POV shifted from one person to another mid-paragraph. And the plot just never ended. It was the same struggle on repeat.

There are so many triggers I can't remember them all, but let me list some that bothered me the most: the n-word (I don't care if it's an era-appropriate word), voluntary nearly-submission to rape, gore, physical assault, murder of a defenseless blind person.

Honestly, I'm not giving it 1 star because it's from an indie author. As the rating is low, I will not publish the review on my blog.

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a story about social classes, war, good and evil men and my favorite romance. I loved it!
It had the same feel and writing style as “Outlander” and I wished she would write more about these characters.
I knew very little about the details of the revolutionary war and thought the author did a great job explaining it to me. I loved the romance! I coveted every moment the h and H were together. They ended up having a very special connection and it made me smile a lot. And I’m totally in love with Dalton. ((Sigh))
To be honest I wasn’t crazy about about the cover. But as the story progressed I would flip back to it and understand why she chose it.
I really feel like this author has a lot talent and want to read her other books. I hope she keeps writing because I loved this story and it was a HEA!
I highly recommend this book. ♥️

“With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you, most devoutly wishing that your later days may be as prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable.” —From George Washington’s farewell speech to his officers

This was a NETGALLEY gift and all opinions are my own. But, I just bought it because it was that good!

I thought I would get hooked on this but it feel flat for me. I was excited to read a historical fiction novel set in the American Revolution but I found it to be lackluster and didn’t even make it a few chapters.

***This Day Is Ours, a romance about a widow torn between two suitors set during the American Revolution should have been exciting read, but this reader struggled to get involved. It’s not as if the author doesn’t have a good command of English and hasn’t researched the subject, but this reader was a good third of the way through the book before the characters engaged my interest enough want to keep reading. The story is a study in contrasts: patriot vs loyalists, rich vs poor, educated vs uneducated, honest vs dishonest. The villain certainly has an agenda, but his duplicitous motives are suspect. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
