It took me awhile to get into the story but once I did I quickly became invested in the characters, in particular Billie Walker. The descriptions of Australia post WWII, how society was adjusting to the return of soldiers and how women in particular resisted the return to domestic roles, are skillfully woven into the telling of the mysterious disappearance of a young immigrant. Much like Phryne Fisher, Billie is able to navigate high society and hold her own with some shady characters. She is a strong, opinionated and determined woman, characteristics that serve her well in her relentless pursuit of the truth.
