Poesy's bravery is bound to delight children who are afraid of monsters, while Doctorow's descriptions of the monsters show each more of a nuisance than an evil, child-harming being. The beheading of Frankenstein at the end might be a little too much for younger children, so proceed with caution.

Poesy knows how to do her research. Her bedtime story choice is the Monster Book. She listens and learns so she can defeat the monsters when they arrive during the night. Though successful at defeating the various monsters, she is not successful at staying out of trouble. Her parents arrive after each battle to tell her to go to bed.
Colorful illustrations bring her bedroom and the monsters to life. Her facial expressions show the determination a child can feel. Readers will see the humor and adults will appreciate this battle for sleeptime. A bit disturbing to see Frankenstein's head sewn on a stuffed animal but readers will get the humor there too. The book ends with her preparing to battle two zombies who did not get enough sleep.
Could be used as part of a lesson on doing research.

Poesy the Monster Slayer is a delightful juxtaposition of a seemingly sweet young girl with ferocious monsters. It is an ode to bedtime - young children will be able to add "monster hunting" to their repertoire of excuses for being out of bed.

Sean, age 6, said he liked this story. He loves that Poesy's parents turn into zombies! And I can definitely relate to long, loud bedtime routines! Fun book with beautiful illustrations!

Not really a graphic novel, but a charming picture book about a girl who loves fighting monsters rather than going to bed.

At first the reader thinks Poesy is a typical little girl who doesn't want to go to bed. Then we find out that she's really slaying monsters in the most clever ways. Very appealing for young children, especially when witnessing her parents frustration. Good read for pre-k-2nd.

Bedtime (and exhausted parents running short on patience) are the real monsters to be slayed in this humorous, colorful, and energetic story for children. As a librarian, I particularly love how Poesy's research in her monster book has prepared her so well! Poesy the Monster Slayer could be used to introduce young students to the importance of reliable sources!

The artwork in this book was awesome. I liked that there was a moment with each monster that left the possibility of the monsters being real rather than pure imagination

I received an ARC through NetGalley from First Second. Cory Doctorow wrote a kids picture book and it was so much fun! Poesy goes to bed and one after another she battles creepy monsters from lore. After each monster her parents come in and tell her she should be sleeping and to go back to bed. The illustrations and colors are fabulous. The strong child character shows that there is nothing to be scared of at night when the lights go out, because Poesy shows you can easily take on monsters with brain power. Beware what happens to her parents when they don’t get enough sleep. My son loved recalling all the cool characters. Super cute and not too creepy! Recommended ages 4-7.

A funny, entertaining story about a little girl who will not (much to her parents chagrin) sleep! Instead, she spends her evening fighting monsters (and turning her parents into them). Love the addition of biracial parents.

This story is great for kids who either like graphic novels and/or like monsters. The story featuring a young girl named Posey keeps her parents up as she hunts monsters that appear in her bedroom. Don't worry she is trained for this. This is a fun story told mostly in bubble conversation that appeals to graphic novel lovers. This is great for the early elementary students that are starting to read but want more than just an easy reader.

The pictures in this book are absolutely amazing. The story was a three (basically a hyperactive child keeps her parents awake -- I think it's trying to empower kids to take care of their own monsters but the story doesn't hang together well - would be better with maybe 5 more pages that show more about how Poesy preps) but the pictures are a 5. Brilliantly colored the pictures only enhance and lift the words to a better story.

This book is adorable! I loved the illustrations and the story told through words AND the illustrations. I am a new parent (our little guy will be one in a month) so watching the change in Poesy's parents throughout the book was very relatable. I definitely feel zombie-ish at times. :) I will be purchasing this book for my little guy's picture book collection. I can see this being a fun book to read as he gets older.

Posey is a little girl who knows what she wants and what she wants is to fight monsters. This adorable picture book bubbles over with Posey’s enthusiasm to stay up and slay all the monsters that arrive in the night, despite her parents’ insistence that she go to bed and not continuously wake them up with the noise. Some of the more scary illustrations are offset by Posey, who can’t be concurred, whimsy and splashes of bright colors. Very fun and had me laughing.

A fun picture book about what happens after the parents go to bed. Poesy is obsessed with monster books and wants her dad to read one before bed. It is adorable. The art is cute and there are cute little nods to nerds everywhere. It was very Buffyesque and really nice to see a book where the kid is not afraid of the monsters under the bed.

This was a cute horror-themed picture book perfect for kids who like things a little on the scarier side. I loved how Poesy was battling classic monsters, and the illustrations were great too.

Nice artwork with the perfect palette for the subject matter. Cute story about a girl who has too much monster slaying to do to bother with going to sleep right away. Some britishisms like cross and mummy. One decapitation. My favorite part was the silly story-ending bit with the dad and Poesy after he read her a story. Cute and reminded me of myself! .

This was a super cute picture book that will no doubt help any child deal with those fears of a 'monster under the bed'. The book has fun and creative ways of fighting the monsters and I loved the amusing nod to the monstrous parents at the end.

This was a super sweet picture book. I loved that the book was divided into sections with each monster getting their own moment for vanquishing. The page in the beginning with all the toys surrounding Poesy reminded me of when I was a child going to bed surrounded by stuffed animals. I also noticed a good chunk of foreshadowing on that page - loved that! The ending made me laugh. I'm sure many parents and fearless children will enjoy this story for years over.

Finally a great picture book with a horror theme! Poesy the Monster Slayer tells the story of a little girl named Poesy, who's bedtime is at hand. But! She has too many adventures and monster slaying to do before she can go to bed and her parents try, oh they try. Until they themselves become monsters because of the lack of sleep. The book isn't too scary, but actually quite cute and still creepy enough to make the whole thing exciting. So, points for that! I love Poesy's attitude and her willfulness to do what needs to be done, haha. The plot is interesting and the rhythm is great considering this is a picture book and thus not so long.

The art is beautiful with rich and deep colors! The violet hues with rays of light gives off that creepy feeling. The text is clear and easy to follow and compliments the pictures. I'm not sure if the color and font are the best, but the text content works nicely. This is a different kind of picture book and thus awesome!
