I loved the idea of this book when I saw it and know it would make an awesome gift for foodies and fantasy fans! Who hasn't wanted to taste the delights seen on screen or read in books....? I loved the Geeky Bartender drinks edition with cocktails and this cookbook did not disappoint either.

The Geeky Chef cookbook takes us on a journey through fandoms from A-Z! Jam packed with favourite recipes from all manner of genre, fantasy, dystopian, sci-do, gamer nerds, top tv, this cookbook is sure to offer even the pickiest geeks a delicious fan approved dish! During lockdown we had the chance to try several of the recipes featured and we found some firm family favourites! Once I declared with certainty, that the new “Dragonbreath Chilli” is a popular food from WoW or that Los Pollos Hermanos is straight from Breaking Bad, even my pickiest eater tucked in. Just casually dropping “try this Elder Scrolls” dish or “this is a Zelda original recipe” was enough incentive for my geeks to at least try (if not demolish) the offerings! All recipes come with quirky background stories and the author gives us little insights into her own geekyness with her narration. Some of the recipes ingredients sound a little strange but they all work strangely well! You just have to trust in the journey!

The Geeky Chef Cookbook is a fun lighthearted cookbook full of delicious sounding recipes with lots of geek credibility. This is apparently based on a blog, which I haven't read yet, but even in this book, I can tell the author has some genuine geeky bona fides. More than me. So many of the fandoms references in this story were unfamiliar to me. It was still enjoyable, though, to read the introductions and explanations. I felt like I learned a little bit about the various fandoms as well as about the recipes.

For me personally the recipes were pretty much a bust. There were a half dozen soup recipes that would be safe for my gluten free diet, as well as some noodles, Buttons in a Blanket, and a few desserts that I'd try. This isn't a negative--if you eat a conventional American omnivore diet, the recipes would be great. But the recipes don't offer indications of what is allergen friendly, much less modifications for allergies. Which is fine, because that's not the point of the book. But unless you're an experienced allergen-friendly cook, I wouldn't recommend this cookbook when preparing geeky foods for someone with allergies.

The format is generally bright and pleasing to the eyes, although there is a lot of TINY black font used, especially in the introduction, that can be very hard on some eyes. But the food photography is attractive and well-done, with photos for most, if not all of the recipes. I don't think the ingredients were too obscure, and the directions seemed clear and easy to follow.

I think that the Geeky Chef Cookbook would make a fun gift for geeky folks in your life, as well as enjoyable reading if you're a fan of cookbooks and/or geeky yourself. It was a nice way to while away some time even for me, who cannot eat most of the recipes. A book with something for almost every fandom. Recipes for every kind of meal--appetizer to dessert, simple to fancy. Pleasing for fans. Most of these are available on the Internet but a worthwhile purchase for libraries where "geeks' are in plenty, or as a gift for someone who is into several of the fandoms involved and into cookbooks.

I loved this cookbook. Full of fun recipes, with interesting names and themes I think it's perfect for any self proclaimed geek, or anyone who has a friend or loved one they know who loves to cook and is always talking about their favorite pop culture obsession.

This is so cute. A little more detailed then I expected but my son enjoyed it and is super excited to try some of the recipes.

Are you a self proclaimed Geek who loves to cook? This is the perfect book for you! Held within these pages are many delicious recipes that are easy to follow and will bring a smile to your face when you read their descriptions. As a fan of all things geek-culture this cookbook provided endless amusement and a desire to get cooking based on many a childhood favorite like the Air Nomad fruit pies from Avatar the Last Airbender.

The recipes in this book were inventive and creative. The information along with the recipes made the geek in me squeal with joy. The array of fandoms were equally represented by those who love these types of cookbooks. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves cooking, eating, and anything science fiction/fantasy.

I always like it when people take something they like, in this case food, and look in a lot of different places how other people are dealing with it. In the geeky chef cookbook, accompanying the blog, there is a collection of foods, both savory and sweet that has links with many fandoms.

The recipes often look great, but what I particularly liked about this cookbook, except for the research that went into designing foods that have something very meagre descriptions in the works they originate from, was the sheer number of different fandoms that the book touches upon. I think it is simply impossible, if you even slightly identify as geeky, to not find at least some of your favorites here.

I haven’t made any of the recipes myself, although I really want to make those lemon cakes from ASOIAF, the cake from Portal, and the cauldron cakes from HP. Apparently, I’m more of a sweet tooth than I give myself credit from.

Cassandra Reeder’s The Geeky Chef Cookbook is a fun collection of unique recipes which are inspired by popular media like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games and The Legend of Zelda. I love Reeder’s writing style and the detailed recipe instructions. I also like the pictures but I would have liked to see all the finished food as well as a more exciting book design.

The book features recipes inspired by various media like books (Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia), movies (The Avengers, The Big Lebowski), TV series (Serenity, The X-Files), and games (World of Warcraft and The Legend of Zelda). This collection features a wide range of foods: there’s recipes for ice cream, pancakes, soups, sandwiches, pies, pastries and more! Eat your way into the world of Breaking Bad with Los Pollos Hermanos Chicken, treat yourself to Harry Potter’s Cauldron Cakes, or have Adventure Time’s Bacon Pancakes for brunch. Or, if you want something a little more complicated or unusual, whip up Mass Effect’s Calamari Gumbo or Earthbound’s Peanut Cheese Bars or maybe even some people-free Soylent Green!

The recipes are clearly detailed and easy-to-follow. I love Reeder’s light and witty humour which gives a lovely touch to an already wonderful cookbook! Each recipe begins with a great brief introduction about the media that inspired it. Most of the dishes are simple and feature common pantry staples. However, for the more adventurous, there are some slightly more complicated dishes with fun specialty ingredients like high energy plankton, herring, and squid!

Many of the recipes are accompanied by lovely full-colour pictures. However, I really would have liked photos of all the finished dishes. I like the themed photos which often subtly reflect the media they are inspired by. But, some pictures are a little generic and I couldn’t immediately figure out the associated media. Also, this book is so quirky that I wish that the layout had been as fun as the unique recipes. The recipes would have been nicely elevated by a more vibrant design.

The Geeky Chef Cookbook is a fantastically fun and unique recipe book. I love Reeder’s other books and this one did not disappoint at all! I can’t wait to pick up a physical copy to add to my cookbook collection!

Super cute and fun cookbook with a ton of useful recipes - none are super difficult, and each one is well put together. Directions are easy to follow, there's a good variety of different geeky interests shown, and the pictures/layout is great. I'd only wish for a few more literary recipes, but other than that, I love it! The Dragonbreath Chili inspired by WoW turned out great. Will be buying a copy of this in the future!

The Geeky Chef Cookbook is one of a pair of fandom based recipe collections by Cassandra Reeder, the Geeky Chef. Originally published in 2015, this second edition, released 14th April 2020 by Quarto on their Race Point imprint, is 160 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.

I am really impressed and mildly amazed at the broad array of food from a very broad array of literary and cultural icons as disparate as Babylon5, Discworld, TMNT, Hunger Games, Zelda, HP, Minecraft and so many more.

The recipes themselves are easy to read and understand. They include a header bar along with prep info, yields and a description. Ingredients are listed bullet point in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard measures with metric measures in parentheses. Preparation instructions are enumerated step by step. Substitutions and alternative preparation or serving information are given in a footer bar at the end of the recipe.

The book includes a cross referenced index which lists individual ingredients (and authors/literary references). The photography and illustration included in the book are -wonderful-, and the nerdy geeky commentary is amazing. The author is a geek, indeed.

Really really worthwhile effort and a great collection. This would elevate the next D&D or LAN or geeky movie night, or book club (when we're allowed to safely gather again) to the next level for sure.

Okay, I had never heard of the Geeky Chef until I read this book, but where the heck has this lady been all my life?!

The Geeky Chef Cookbook is full of appetizers, main dishes and desserts inspired by all your favorite fandoms. Some of the recipes are classics with a twist. Some of them are new creations. All of them sound delicious.

I really enjoyed this book. I will, however, say that I loved her cocktail recipe book just a little more, but this cookbook was still filled with a ton of nostalgia, some new fandoms I’m going to look into and a bunch of great recipes I can’t wait to try.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “but Mal, do I have to be a geek to enjoy The Geeky cookbook?” To that I say, “Dwight, you ignorant slut!” Even if you’ve never watched an episode of Game of Thrones (seriously?). Even if you’ve never heard of Harry Potter (really?). Even if you have no idea whether you’d join the Imperials or the Stormcloaks (come on?!?). I still think you’d enjoy the recipes that Reeder has created. The pictures are shiny and each recipe is accompanied by a paragraph that explains what fandom the recipe is inspired by and a little context of what and how the food came about.

I honestly cannot wait to make a bunch of these recipes. I’m already imagining the amazing Harry Potter party I could throw with those Pumpkin Pasties (which I’ve always wanted to try) and those Cauldron Cakes. If you’re a food loving fangirl (or boy), you gotta check these recipes out!

Fantasy fans will be excited to pick up the latest cookbook from The Geeky Chef, Cassandra Reeder. Reeder has always been fascinated with the food mentioned in fantasy books, games, and movies, and she has a blog for all the geeks out there who concur. The Geeky Chef Cookbook: Real-Life Recipes for Your Favorite Fantasy Foods is full of fantasy-type recipes that, while they seem a bit weird, are actually good to eat, and take away the guessing for readers who are wondering just what their favorite characters are eating.

There are a lot of fantasy lovers out there, so this cookbook fills a need, and will be one that belongs on the cookbook shelves of anyone who wants to prepare the foods in favorite fantasy books and video games. While there are excellent photographs of a few of the dishes, this cookbook could be improved if it had more. Otherwise, it is well-written, the recipes are easy to follow, and the end results are actually good enough to eat. Reeder has included recipes such as Treacle Tarts and Cauldron Cakes from Harry Potter, as well as Cheese Buns from The Hunger Games. The recipe for Highland Sandwiches from The Outlander is fairly involved (luscious handmade chutney), but well-worth it. Everybody, it seems, loves The Hobbit, and that series is represented in several recipes, including Seed Cakes, Cram, and Lembas. The legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Super Mario Brothers video games have appealing recipes, and there are also several from Game of Thrones.

All told, this cookbook is a fantasy lover’s dream and will be enjoyed and cooked out of often.

A brilliantly edited collection of themed cuisine. It’s a perfect purchase for the geek in your life, whether it be as a personal gift or to inspire a menu in their honour.

A cookbook that appeals to my daughter is a real winner for me. We're hoping to get several menus inspired by her favourite programmes. I loved it so much I need to buy a paperback copy.
