Really enjoyed this book, a great first in the series. This is my first book by Susan Wilkins and I was so pleased to have found another author that I love. This book was so entertaining, it was full of secrets, and it was dark and very tense. The characters were great and very likeable, the main character Megan was gritty and hardened but still with a soft side.. Thanks to Bookouture and netgalley I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am hanging out for the next in the series! A solid 5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read Buried Deep in exchange for an honest review.

This police procedural is gripping and very accurate, to the point that I would not recommend reading and eating at the same time. The main character Detective Sergeant Megan Thomas of the Devon and Cornwall Police is working with DC Vish Prasad and DC Brittney Saric to investigate a body that is found in a septic tank. Some graphic details are to be found in this section, as well as in DS Thomas' memories about her own abduction.

DS Megan Thomas has moved to Devon following a harrowing undercover operation in London's gangster underworld. She is in therapy and living with her sister's family. Now she has a high profile murder case on her hands but is more emotionally engaged with a rape case, all the while trying to negotiate new working relationships with her new set of colleagues.
Megan is a really strong lead character and detective. She has doubts about her abilities due to her emotional involvement in her previous undercover work but is tenacious and determined with her new cases. She is undergoing counselling and struggling to deal with the emotional impact of her experiences, whilst also mourning the breakdown of her marriage and the feeling of being a burden on her sister's family.
The plot is fast paced as it moves through both investigations. One is a murder, a body discovered in the septic tank of a celebrity. The other is the rape of a fourteen year old girl who refuses to name her attacker.
I shared Megan's frustrations with victims, suspects and lawyers keeping secrets or working the system for their own gains. There are classic elements of police procedure novels in terms of the interview of suspects and the following of leads. The people that Megan encounters are not necessarily likeable which makes them all the more believable and helps us to identify with Megan even more.
Buried Deep provides a strong introduction to Megan as a character but does also manage to be an enjoyable police mystery. This is the first book by author Susan Wilkins that I have read but it won't be the last and I hope to catch up with DS Thomas again soon!

This is the first book in a brand new series by Susan Wilkins. After years of working in London undercover, Detective Megan Thomas is now living in Devon. Her years on the force have taken its toll on her and her personal life, ad is hoping for a change of pace.

However Devon seems just as crime ridden as London as in her first week, she is thrown into the case of a murder and a rape.

Struggling with her own issues can she conquer this to successfully pursue the case?

This is a brilliant first outing for Detective Megan Thomas, and we get to know her and her history.

A really well told mystery.

I’m always excited to find a new series, and this is no exception. I liked how the author introduced the characters and think there is real potential for the chemistry to grow strong among the investigative unit. I also enjoyed the investigations themselves, as I thought that they were well-done. Any new series may have a few blips, but I enjoyed this one enough to come back for more. From undercover work back to being a detective. That is a simple description to the complicated situation Detective Megan Thomas is dealing with. Four years undercover came with cost to Megan. Having lost her cover and almost her life brought that job to a crashing end. Her marriage was ruined and she is overwhelmed with stress.

Hoping for a lighter workload, Megan hopes to ease into her new duties. One of the most relaxing things Megan to do at this point is swimming in the sea. This is a very cathartic activity, no matter how cold the water. When a body is found in a bunker near where she swims, the gruesome discovery has tainted the one thing that truly calms her. Just as Megan is about to dive into her first case, a second body is found - this one far too close where she takes her daily swim.

While Megan attempts to work the case, she immediately suffers a panic attack. Dealing with PTSD and the related trauma that goes along with it knocks her to her knees. The stress of working this crime is triggering for Megan.

As Buried Deep is the first book in a new series, no doubt readers will be able to see Megan's growth with regard to her feelings and how she copes with her triggers. I also look forward to see her progress with her new job and team. I love detective fiction especially when the primary protagonist is a real person with emotions and actions are easy to connect with. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Buried Deep was a well-written book that kept me interested and seeking clues, while I was unable to work things out on my own. I love when I am able to be surprised in a book and Susan Wilkins did a fine job with keeping me on my toes.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This is a brilliant first in a series and I am looking forward to reading more.
The story centres on Megan, a 'damaged' policewoman who has endured a lot of psychological trauma while working in an undercover operation. She has now been transferred to a more rural, seaside location well away from London. She finds herself living with her sister's family and questioning her ability to continue going on as a police officer.
In many of these types of books the main character is flawed and hard to like, but I felt a strong empathy and admiration for Megan. She felt like a safe character despite what she has been through and her judgement appeared to be sound.
The plot was tight and gripping. I am happy to recommend this book to any lovers of a good thriller.
Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

After years of working undercover Megan Thomas has transferred to Devon to go back to general police work & recover from a particularly nasty experience. Her first case- investigating a body dumped in a septic tank triggers a panic attack & makes her wonder if she will ever be able to do her job properly. However when the body of a young girl is fund, someone that Megan had met & felt the police hadn't helped enough, she recovered her old spark.

This is the first in a new series & it really has started with a bang. The characters are all interesting & the plot had many twists & turns to keep the reader on their toes. I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Detective Megan Thomas had spent four years undercover and the trauma meant she was now divorced and seeing a psychologist to help her face her past. She had moved from London to Devon to join a new station; to gain some peace of mind, but her first day on the job jolted her so much that Megan wondered if she could ever do this again. Megan’s fear kept her awake at night; it came to her when she least expected it. Could she push through it? If she didn’t it would mean he'd won…

With a body found in a septic tank on the property of a well-known personality, then a fourteen-year-old girl alleging she’d been raped but couldn’t or wouldn’t name the perpetrator, Megan felt frustrated. But when her DCI told Megan she wanted her off the rape case as she was too involved, her faith in herself was once again shaken. Would Megan find the answers she needed; help her team to put away the criminals they were chasing?

Damage Done (with the title now changed to Buried Deep) is the 1st in a new series – Detective Megan Thomas – by Susan Wilkins and I thoroughly enjoyed it. With two cases running concurrently, they were easy to keep track of and with the gradual release of clues and snippets of evidence, the suspense and mystery slowly cleared. A great start to a new series which I’m sure I’ll continue. Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Having read other books by this author in her Kaz Phelps series I was looking forward to seeing what would be offered in this book, the first one to feature Detective Megan Thomas.
I love starting a new series and starting from the very beginning is best. I like to get know the characters early on. I enjoy being able to learn about the character and seeing them grow.
The main character is Megan Thomas. After working undercover Megan now lives with her sister and getting back into life that isn't undercover. Working for the Major Crime team in Devon a new case is thrown at Megan. It soon becomes clear that Megan has issues she needs to work through and has a panic attack at the scene. Megan needs to learn to control this and get herself back to the person she was, even if it is going to be so difficult.
I think I'm going to like Megan as a character, I think she's going to have so much to offer and I believe this could be a pretty damn good series.
I am looking forward to what is offered in future books.

I really love getting into a series from the very beginning of it.....
Buried Deep is the first in the Detective Megan Thomas series and I will admit this completely grabbed my attention from the start....
It was my first time delving into the work of this author...
I loved her main character Megan Thomas
You can tell she has been through quite a traumatic period in her life but she is trying to put it all behind her and move forward in her career..
Easier said than done sometimes..
Her first day back to the police force after her undercover work is not what she expected. But she's strong, she's a fighter and has the support of her family behind her..
We get snipets of her life as an undercover officer throughout the novel and you are hungry for more......
I wonder will we see more of her previous life in the next instalment in the series..
Throughout the novel Megan questions herself and her policing ability and you really are shouting for her to overcome her emotions and scars from her previous undercover work.....
Quite a compulsive and addictive read for sure...
I felt very comfortable engrossed in this authors work...I loved it in fact....
Well worth taking the time for this series....

This first in a new crime thriller series features DS Megan Thomas. She's recently returned to Devon after doing undercover work for the Met and is living with her sister and family while she gets back into the swing of police work. Her first case on the new job on the Major Crime Team for South Devon involves the discovery of a dead body in the septic tank on the estate of an actress turned children's book author, Georgia O'Brien. As Megan leans into the tank to look at the victim, she experiences a PTSD reaction brought on by a horrible experience she had in her previous work. Although she's seeing a therapist, she has issues dealing with her past trauma and is also finding it a bit hard to integrate back into the detective role. Her boss, DCI Laura Slater, seems to have a few qualms about Megan's performance but the rest of the team seems pretty solid. As Megan jumps in to the investigation of the apparent homicide, a young, local girl is coerced by her grandmother into reporting a rape. Kerry Waycott is 14-years-old and is vague with details and refuses to identify the man who did this. Megan has her work cut out for her and things are about to get a lot more difficult. NO SPOILERS.

This was a great introduction to a new character and series. I found it easy to relate to Megan and look forward to seeing her progress in her new job and life. Also eager to learn more about the rest of the CID team. The narrative flowed smoothly and the cases were complicated and interesting. Although I was able to guess how it was all going to come together (probably because I read way too many books in the genre), I still enjoyed the way the author put all the pieces together for a satisfying conclusion. I look forward to reading the next installments of this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read, review and recommend.

This is a good start to a new series. The book moves at a fast pace and has some really interesting characters. DS Megan Thomas has moved to Devon after working undercover in the Met. The story is told from different points of view and works really well. This is turning out to be a great start for a new police procedural and I look forward to seeing the development. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

It’s quite a while since I’ve read a book by an author I have read before and it was a pleasure to read book one in this new series by Susan Wilkins. Her previous series featuring Kaz Phillips was one that I enjoyed so had high expectations for this. I wasn’t disappointed, if anything it is better.

I liked Megan immediately, her interactions with her co- workers Vish and Brittany felt realistic. Her acceptance that with being older she was a little ‘out of the loop’ but she was good with them. Encouraging, supportive and a refusal to let them take the flack for her mistakes.

The reader is aware that she faced a life changing end to her previous role as an undercover officer. They are aware that she was lucky to survive, even though she had been left with some mental scarring. But that is all, nothing else is revealed apart from a fear of rats. I liked this, I expect that more will be revealed later in the series, as she gets to know her team more.

I felt that whilst the two cases being investigated at the beginning it’s only in the second half of the book that they have more focus. They are there, but you see more about how the various team members interact with each other. You also see Megan’s sessions with her councillor, and the importance of her family.

A very character driven novel, with some that I loved to hate. I’m looking forward to reading more.

This was one of those books whose beginning had me worried if I was going to be able to finish it. I hung in there, and happy to report the slow choppy beginning turned into a story I very much enjoyed. A wonderful police procedural with a intriguing cast of characters. I am anxiously waiting the next installment of the book.
So, hang in there , don't get distracted the book is worth the read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of the book.

Buried Deep is the opening instalment in the Detective Superintendent Megan Thomas series set in the normally quiet, picturesque county of Devon. Megan has relocated there to be nearer to her sister in the seaside town of Berrycombe, having served several gruelling years working undercover for the Metropolitan Police. Her decision to move was for a better lifestyle and it has cost her dearly, including her marriage. On her first day as the new member of the Major Investigation Team, she is assigned to investigate a murder following the discovery of a body that was left in a septic tank. Still wrestling with the PTSD caused by many years as a dedicated undercover officer, Megan is dubious about working as part of a team again as she has worked alone for eons. She also finds herself investigating the rape of a teenage girl who is unwilling to name her attacker.

This was a brilliant start to what promises to be an excellent new police procedural series. With its well executed plot, the twists were plentiful with frequent meandering turns and a there was a great use of misdirection overall. I took an immediate liking to Megan; her vulnerable state and insecurity were touching and emotive though she was still able to deliver when the need arose.

I was really impressed by the techniques Susan Wilkins used to keep my interest in the story; the clever plot without being overly complicated; the timely reveals that ramped up the tension; the unexpected developments.

It will be a long wait for the next novel in this super, stylish series and I have no hesitation in recommending Buried Deep.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

After years of undercover work in the Met, Detective Megan Thomas has relocated to Devon where she hopes that living with her sister will provide her with a much easier time than she has been used to. The discovery of a body in a septic tank triggers a panic attack, however, bringing back memories that she is desperate to suppress. Not knowing whether she is capable of doing this job any more, Megan finds the impetus to continue when another body is discovered. Feeling that the police were somewhat to blame, she must try to put her past behind her in order to get the justice that she feels is deserved.

I have read, recently, how some readers are not fans of a prologue. I am firmly in the other camp, liking the hints that this seemingly unconnected part of the book gives about what is to come. If you share my opinion, then you are going to love the prologue of Buried Deep. I was instantly drawn in by what I was reading, desperate to know how this linked to what came next. Although some aspects are revealed, Susan Wilkins has kept an awful lot back, hopefully for a subsequent book, as I am dying to know the full circumstances!

The book contains two main plots, each as gripping as the other. After the body of an unknown man is found in a septic tank, we are introduced to the ultimate dysfunctional household with numerous secrets that we are not yet privy to. It was apparent that, even without the discovery of the body, there was something very shifty going on, the author drip-feeding information throughout the book to build up a clear picture of what was happening. We meet some horrible characters whose wealth and status gives them the belief that they are untouchable, but just how involved are they with regards to the dead man?

My favourite part of the plot, however, was one that made me sad and furious at the same time. After a teenage girl is raped, we see her world begin to crumble around her, not just because of the act itself but because of how it is dealt with on social media. In a world where many young girls have the ambition of being a 'Youtuber', it was horrible to see how some of her so-called 'friends' used the crime to their advantage in order to gain likes and follows. It is a sad indictment of society that people's traumas can be exploited like this, and I applaud the author for writing about this distasteful modern phenomena.

Megan is a great character with a backstory that we only skim the surface of. She understands what her flaws are, and although she is receiving help for what has happened in her past, she is aware that these flaws could prevent her from doing the job she wants to do.

Buried Deep is a very promising start to a new series; Susan Wilkins has definitely whetted my appetite for more!

Thank you to Bookouture for letting me take part in this tour and for my copy of this book via Netgalley. This is the first book in a new series and this is the first time I have read anything by this author.

Our main character is Megan Thomas. Megan has just moved to Devon from the capital. Megan was working undercover and is finding it difficult to adjust. I really liked Megan. She is good police. She has gut feelings and follows them up. At times Megan doubts herself but I could tell that she was on the right path. Megan has a dark past and I can't wait to learn more about it as the series continues.

Susan manages to hook you in, make you fall in love with the characters and then have you on the edge while you await their fate. I was quickly invested in not only Megan but her family and the rest of the team. The team are fairly new to each other and I am looking forward to seeing how they work together.

The pace of this book is spot on. Susan speeds you up and slows you down just at the right times. The book is well crafted with multiple threads and red herrings to really keep you interested.

This is the beginning of what looks to be a really exciting and gripping series.
