Very nice read! Great ideas and beautiful photographs. A great read for anyone who not only is interested in food, but interested in the history of food and how far it has come since the beginning of time.

This book was supremely interesting and kept me hooked. So much history of foods, both common and uncommon. Regional delicacies get special treatment, as do American standards. Great read!

As a foodie and international traveler, this book was a mouth-watering treat. Full of international treats and food-related events, "Gastro Obscura" is great to flip through and explore the different cuisines and food cultures of the world.

What is not to love - food, travel and culture!
Thank you for allowing me to read about all the tastes and flavors around the world.
A truly joyous adventure of food and new knowledge.

I want to thank NetGalley, the author and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of this publication. In return, I have promised to provide an unbiased review.

I often visit the Atlas Obscura website, so I was delighted to find out that there was a Gastro Obscura book out. This is a fun read for foodies and fans of strange, unusual, and wonderful food traditions, fun facts, and interesting information. It's the kind of book you can pick up and flip through to a random page for an enjoyable journey into another culture through food. Very enjoyable.

I have followed Atlas Obscura for a while. As a lover of travel and food, the gastronomic aspect of Gastro Obscura: A Food Adventurer’s Guide by Cecily Wong and Dylan Thuras. immediately appeals to me. Food is a universal language and a part of every life occasion happy and sad. Food brings people together. In a world so divided, it is wonderful to see every effort to identify that which unites us.

This book is an absolute delight! Highly recommended for libraries. It explored food traditions from around the world, but I also love the photography and illustrations! It goes by continents then countries, but I love the sections like rice or honey worldwide or the focus of a particular city. like La Paz Bolivia or Asmara Eritrea.

This is the kind of book that had me stopping every few pages to share another fun fact with my partner. I loved "Atlas Obscura" and follow the gastro obscura Instagram account, so I couldn't wait to start this book. I loved it enough to buy it in print and will likely buy more copies to give as gifts to anyone who enjoys travel and trying new food.

This was SUCH an interesting book! I wound up pre-ordering the title before it was published (I'm delayed in sending my review, though!) because I was enjoying it so much. Atlas Obscura books are always fascinating, but I think this one is my new favorite!

Well I don't know really where to start with reviewing Gastro Obscura. The illustration and photography is absolutely fantastic and this is a true journey around the world by way of their weird and wonderful cuisines

The story element makes this so much more than a cookbook so if you are looking for a traditional recipe book this is not for you. It includes fascinating history - who knew the first sandwich was NOT invented by the Earl of Sandwich, but by the Han Chinese. A mixture of fun facts, exploration of food and its traditions and creative recipes and where and how to try them this book is a gorgeous addition to the kitchen table.

Five Stars!
Gastro Obscura is a well-illustrated coffee table type read filled with fascinating facts and interesting foods from around the world. Anyone from foodies to history buffs will enjoy it whether reading it from cover to cover or just flipping through at leisure. The only problem I had with Gastro Obscura is that after reading it, I now have an almost endless list of fascinating places to visit, though I'm not sure about some of those delicacies.

I'm grateful to Netgalley and Workman Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Gastro Obscura.

An interesting and quirky book full of information. It's good to dip in and out of when you just want a bit of light reading.
I really enjoyed this book and even learnt a few things.

Enjoyable, but a bit heavy. This is a coffee table book, not a sit-and-read book. Foodie travelers will be interested in reading about opportunities in their intended destinations. Also appropriate for armchair-traveling while we ride out Omicron. DNF because of the time commitment-- this is a big book with little print.

A wide range of food-related curiosities from around the world, including history, science, regional and local foods, innovations, and more. Organized geographically, it's beautifully illustrated and a perfect book to pick up and read whenever you have a few minutes' time. I've kept our copy on the kitchen table, where family members like to pick it up and browse while having a snack or eating breakfast. It's a great conversation starter, and there's sure to be something to appeal to everyone (we all have to eat!). Highly recommended.

While I like what the obscura folks do, I find that these collections that have to pick and choose one thing from a state or a region tend to fall short. And this one did very personally. I think a resident of any state would have inside info to cool locales and eateries, yet these books will pick some head scratchers that aren't always representative. In this book, their choice for Michigan was not only bad, not only misnamed the location, but had a choice that I found unrepresentative to the point of disrespectful. So yeah its cool but if they're not gonna do a deep dive and just pick some random thing, then what's the point?

A fascinating read, though the entries for Ontario (my home province) were little mundane compared to some of the others.

This was a great trip around the world through food and I enjoyed reading every page. I will definitely have to try and cook some of these foods.

Beautiful photos, chockful of fun facts, appreciate the focus on storytelling and celebrating culture rather than "exoticizing" food traditions. A perfect coffee table book!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of the title.

If you're a fan of Atlas Obscura, you're going to love this. It's a food-focused book that feels great for flipping through rather than cover to cover, and though some of this stuff felt very familiar as someone who loves sites like AO and Mental Floss, there's a lot of gems.
