As someone who plans exactly what and where she’s going to eat, as a priority when planning any trip, this seemed like just my cup of tea. It is a great gift for the adventurous foodie, with a penchant for the weird and wonderful, and an interest in bizarre historical tidbits. It’s the perfect book to have sitting on the coffee table, to browse and dip into, and read the quirkiest and most fascinating bits aloud to anyone in earshot! My only disappointment was that the photography and design felt a bit dated, but I guess it’s expected for a book gathered from endless sources. Thanks NETGALLEY.

This book is absolutely beautiful, and filled with amazing photos and "weird" food suggestions from around the USA and world! It is definitely one you want to own, so you can refer back to it before your travels. Being a vegetarian, there aren't too many things I will be trying on the list, but it's still interesting to read about. I also enjoyed the restaurant suggestions, such as the Huashan Teahouse on top of China's highest peak, and lots of the other tidbits, such as museums, distilleries, history, etc. This book is HUGE and filled with so much info. A must read for all foodies!

I really enjoyed this book and how it looks at different cultures and the food those cultures enjoy and some history to go with it. It has great photos and gives you interesting facts to go with it. If you love food and learning about other cultures this book is a must read.

Thank you to Cecily Wong; Dylan Thuras; Atlas Obscura, Workman Publishing Company, and Netgalley for a free copy of "Gastro Obscura: A Food Adventurer's Guide" for an honest review.

If you are a lover of Atlas Obscura and a lover of food, look no further, this is the guide you need! This tells you about all the big names and little holes in the wall of foods you should be trying close to home and out there in the big wide internationally traveled world. There are so many new and different kinds of foods it's raved about, encouraging a wider tested pallet, and also a deeper knowledge of the history behind foods.

I VERY much wanted to read this but it wasn't available for kindle. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC (well, sort of). I'm sure this is fascinating.

If you love to travel and love to try local cuisines, then this book is for you. Food and restaurants from around the world with rather interesting foods. I'm not that brave to try them all, but several sound quite interesting.

A huge book, full of interesting food bits and food wonders from all over the world. Truly amazing how many different kinds of food, indigenous to the place, more specific than just the country, where it's from. Some steeped in history and others a modern invention. Some borne of necessity and are still served today. Others lost, alive only in tales.

You can't finish this book in 1 sitting. It is meant to be taken in bites. Such an interesting read!

A brilliant compilation of food, popular gastronomic spots with history, quirky facts about foods/places/cultures from all over the world - this book is entertaining, packs a lot of information and gives you so many fantastic details that it makes a great coffee table book. Any page you turn to, you are immediately informed about something somewhere that existed or still exists with the hype that ultimately made it into this book. I enjoyed reading it, and highly recommend it to all who are interested to know about the world through the lens of food, culture and history.

A food lover's dream come true. Gastro Obscura will be a hit in bookstores and a conversation starter at many dinner tables around the country. The pictures are scrumptious, the recommendations are divine and the book is drool-worthy. This book has sealed its spot at the top of my holiday gift-giving list. This is a very interesting book of strange foods around the world and food related traditions. There were lots of pictures in full color, which added to the experience.

I recieved an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review..

A fascinating look at food from around the world that could make your mouth water or your stomach turn.

It is in sections of the world by continent and then by country and area. Each section highlights food festivals, events, items, specialized produce, and strange food eaten by the locals. There are pictures for many of the foods or festivals and some notes to help aid in comprehension. Some of the history is more in-depth but most are done in shorter summaries.

The HOW TO TRY IT hints are useful as some of the foods are a little weird and wonderful and it may not be obvious how best to indulge in said treats.

Given the current lockdown situation, it was a nice trip around the world via food since I can't actually do that in person at the moment.

I've been a fan of Atlas and Gastro Obscura for years, and have read many of the entries online for both topics. I was worried that many of the entries in Gastro Obscura would be repeats of what's online, and was pleasantly surprised that 85% of the entries were new to me! This book isn't just about looking at gross or weird foods- it's about examining the way that food intersects with culture, how food is affected by capitalism and political upheaval, and the ways people have innovated to have tasty foods in hard times. I read every entry in this book and learned a lot! My only qualms is I wish there was more.
Thanks, NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Gastro Obscura delivered exactly what I hoped it would - interesting, insight, informative, and of course obscure entries about food all around the world.

I read it straight through, but I think it would be just as good if not better as a coffee table book, as the short entries are perfect for picking up and putting down again.

Have always loved Atlas Obscura content and Gastro especially, as I love food writing and culture. Having all of this content spanning the continents in one book is amazing! This is also a great one for the coffee table or for gifting.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for an e-ARC of this book!

In the true odd fashion that Atlas Obscura is known for comes this beautiful, detailed, and fascinating book! A perfect read for those looking to take a journey through food, culture, and history one page at a time. It's super fun, thoroughly researched, and so informative and I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy for myself when it comes out!

This is an immersive, detailed, fascinating book. With the characteristic odd stories Atlas Obscura is known for, Gastro Obscura focuses on strange food--from unusual dishes to wacky restaurants and more--all over the world. For anyone interested in culinary history, or simply to learn offbeat facts, this is an excellent read.

Well, thanks to Gastro Obscura, my Christmas shopping is done. This book is informative, entertaining, and at times really disgusting. It is a must-read for anyone who eats. It is one of those books that has such fascinating info, the reader must share tidbits with anyone nearby, which can be annoying. I advise people to buy two copies and read them in sync with a partner, This is one of those books that is better shared while reading. An absolute blast!

Foodies, armchair travelers and trivia buffs rejoice! Gastro Obscura: A Food Adventurer's Guide takes you on a mouthwatering journey through food, culture and history one page at a time.

Authors Cecily Wong and Dylan Thuras explore endangered traditions like the fire fishermen of Taiwan and culinary wonders such as Tanzania's "Zanzibar pizza." And as the title suggests, obscure oddities abound such as the Sourtoe Cocktail, where visitors to Canada's Yukon territory can drink an alcoholic beverage of their choice accompanied by an actual preserved human toe.

This is the perfect browsable read to inspire a special outing on your next road trip or overseas adventure.
