I am operating under the "better late than never" mindset here. I received an advanced reader copy of this one on Netgalley thanks to the publisher and author, and then unfortunately, it slipped through the cracks. And I missed reading and rating this one. So yeah, better late than never.

Darynda Jones has such a distinct voice. I have read two books by her, and I think I could pick out one of her books after reading only a few pages without knowing who it was by. So massive kudos to her. That's tough to do. She has such a unique writing style, and I love it.

I can see why I wanted to read this one when it came out. It checked all of the boxes of what I was interested in at the time, and it still holds up. For upper YA readers, I think this would be a really fun series, featuring memorable characters and an intriguing plot. Definitely still worth a read. Great on audio or in print.

I really liked the Charley Davidson series, so I thought I'd like this one too. I don't think I'll continue this series though.

Darynda Jones always delivers. I really enjoyed this one. It was quick and fun, and carried Darynda's signature humor.

Darynda Jones is my favorite author. I have read all of her books and always recommend them to the teens.
Her books always have adventure, mystery, action along with romance, all in one book.

A rather weak effort to be honest. There’s hints of some creative ideas but the romance angles weigh the narrative down. The writing has potential but the cliche plot choices - instalove, love triangles, all the hallmarks of an overwrought teen YA - make it hard to finish. Lorelei doesn’t do a lot to distinguish herself both in world and in the genre at large, so only the writing itself stands out as “good.” A disappointment - though I do plan to try the author’s adult series. Perhaps it has more inspired story choices and plotlines.

I requested this book so long ago and just now am realizing that I never reviewed it. I will need to do a re-read in order to do a proper review.
