“All About the Amish” author by Karen M. Johnson-Weiner is a book that answers most questions people have about Amish. There are 7 sections, each examining different topics. Within each section are series of related questions. I found some things that I knew and many that I didn’t.

The author says she has been friends with Amish and studied them for decades. She has a wealth of information to share, although she stays away from controversial items. I enjoyed her style of writing. The information is clear and easy to understand. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the Amish lifestyle.or faith. I highly recommend it and rate it 4 stars. A copy was provided by NetGalley but these are my honest words.

I enjoyed reading this book because it answered a lot of questions that I had regarding the Amish. I was able to read why they believe what they do, the history of their life, and their lifestyle from birth to death.

“All About the Amish”, by Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, provides answers to a wide variety of questions that people have about the Amish. The book is divided into 7 sections, each of which examines a different broad area. For example, one focuses on what it means to be “plain”, another on what Amish church communities are like, and others on various stages of the life cycle (Amish childhood, courtship and marriage, and adulthood). Within each section are a series of related questions, many of which cover issues I’ve wondered about. Basically this is an “Amish for dummies” sort of book!

The author has been friends with the Amish and studied their culture and their faith for several decades, and has a plethora of information to share. She writes in a straightforward manner and the information is clear and easy to understand. At the same time, however, she goes into considerable detail. She also clearly respects the Amish, both their religion and their culture.

I found the first section (basically the history of the Amish) a bit difficult to get through but after that it was a pretty quick read. I particularly liked that she clarified that the Amish are not a homogenous group; there are different Amish communities, some more progressive than others.

One thing I did notice is that the author avoids almost any controversial subjects, such as questions of sexual abuse among the Amish, gender roles and the limitations placed on Amish women (although there is some brief discussion of female submissiveness), substance abuse, and so on.

Overall, this is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who is curious about the Amish, or who reads Amish-themed fiction (mysteries, etc.) and wants a better understanding of the setting of these novels.

Karen does a wonderful job answering all the questions you would ever have about the Amish.
I knew that there were a few different groups of Amish, and knew of some of their ways.
All about the Amish goes into more detail, answers questions and shows how they choose to live their lives.

All about the Amish helped to answer some the questions I was not sure about. I have read some about the Amish, but know I know just a little bit more.

This was a quick and easy read.

Karen Johnson-Weiner gives us an Interesting read. Gives many interesting facts that I did not know.

Anyone interested in the Amish should give this book a read when it is released, March 19, 2020.

This is a very interesting book of questions and answers about the Amish.

Living close to Holmes County, OH and having spent lots of time in this beautiful Amish area over the years getting to know the people and their lifestyles has been a wonderful experience. There are many groups within this area, so it was very interesting reading the information, some of it being new to me.

There are lots of questions and answers to just about anything you would want to know about the Amish communities.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about their lifestyle and religion.

While I have read other accounts of the Amish, I enjoyed the breakdown in this book on the many different sects among the Amish. I live in Ohio and am aware of some differences among the Amish, "black bumper" drove cars, but had to paint all chrome black, I often see Amish dressed traditionally, but using cell phones and even computers in the work place. I am also aware that the Amish are not entirely separated from modern society- they face many modern issues such as drinking and drug issues, as the rest of us, among other issues. I have always found the various Christian religions interesting in their diversity and the Amish simply because they are nearby and I really hear so little true about them and their religion. Interesting book and, well researched, on a little known group.

This book aims to provide a comprehensive and easy to understand collection of answers to questions about the Amish. Divided into several sections covering different areas (history, church practices, beliefs, lifestyle, etc.) the book provides a great deal of information in an easily digestible format. Each section is concise but still provides a solid answer to questions ranging from "how are Amish communities organized" to "why don't the Amish allow photos?" One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the acknowledgement of the many different Amish communities and their different beliefs and practices, which can come as a surprise to readers who may have assumed all Amish live the same way. Overall this is a great starting point for anyone curious about the Amish and looking to find answers.

I've been always curious about the Amish lifestyle and choices, and this answered all of those burning questions. This was a great read and an excellent reference book for readers. It is arranged in a question and answer format, breaking each chapter into smaller topics, like the history of the Amish, their families, school, children, and family. It ends discussing technology, health, and tourism.

Although this was a very short read I found it very interesting and I learned a lot. I would highly recommend it.

i have always been curious about the Amish people and their lifestyles. this book was very informative. I liked the question and answer format. It was a very fascinating book and I will purchase it for the library.

I live in Pennsylvania and go to Lancaster quite often, which is home to quite a number of Amish. I have grown up around them, but have never really taken the time to know more about their life and choices. This book was perfect for me, as it wasn't a very long read and answered most of the questions that I had.

Super introductory book with full information, should be helpful to all who want to know about the history and beliefs of the Amish.

This is a fascinating book of questions and answers about Amish history, life and religion. A short book, it's easy to read it straight through (like I did) or flip between sections. While there is certain information repeated, it is because it's in different sections - more easily allowing for this to be a reference book. I did get bogged down a bit in the beginning with the section on how the Amish came to be (partly by searching and reading more about certain things for more information) but once I got past that - it was a faster read. I really appreciated how the author included "in some communities" and "in more progressive communities they do X, in more conservative ones they do Y" - making it clear that the Amish aren't as uniform in their lives as some outsiders may believe. This helped the book be so much stronger overall, and really showed the depth of understanding that the author has about the Amish. She's really an expert. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read Amish romance, Amish mysteries, or is just curious about religion in general.

"All about the Amish" was exactly that. The author answers many questions that I'm guessing most people would have about the Amish. I have been enamored by the Amish ever since I lived in Michigan. I already knew quite a bit about them, but wanted to see what this author had to say.

The thing about Amish is that there are several different groups and each group has their own set of rules and guidelines, even down to the shape of the prayer cap. So while I agree with the author on many points, it is important to understand that this does not pertain to everyone who calls themselves "Amish".

When I think of the Amish the image comes to mind of a horse and buggy, long beards, and hard working people who work together to make things happen in their community without the use of modern tools and technology. There are a lot of Amish around my hometown in Upstate New York so I wanted to get some answers to questions I had about their culture so I picked up this book!

The book begins with an overview of the struggles the Amish have had in trying to maintain their long-standing beliefs and culture while being increasingly exposed to American modernism. The opening chapters trace their European roots and arrival in America. Then, a thorough explanation of their religious roots, rituals, and symbols continues the insightful look into Amish ways.

Practices vary widely among the Amish people. Some are very strict and some are now becoming more liberal allowing their members to use computers, tractors, telephones, and other equipment to perform their work. Since there is no centralized governing body, each group—sometimes as small as just a few families—is able to adapt its beliefs to accept or reject any element of modern culture as it deems appropriate.

The book closes with an in-depth look at how the Amish have adjusted to such factors as technology, health matters, government interactions, and tourism. There Is a helpful appendice that compares the beliefs and lifestyles of the Amish to those of the Mennonites and other related groups which was interesting information to know

While the authors present information in a respectful way, they do not avoid some of the darker subjects, such as child abuse and domestic violence which surprisingly seem to be pretty common within the Amish group.

So if you have ever been curious about what being Amish means this book may be of interest to you.
