I have always enjoyed reading anything about Martha Washington whether fiction or non fiction. Boltes historical novel on the life of Martha is replete with rich details. She describes the clothing. Fabrics, and furnishings of eighteenth century Virginia very well. I think she captures the essence of Martha and her voice. While the author did take creative license with some things, she didn't go overboard. Anyone who loves colonial history and historical fiction will want to read this novel.

Hello! This was an amazingly-beautiful book. I love historical fiction, and I always find myself immersed in the time period when the writing is well done. And this book is no exception. I am a super fan of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington...so I am a little biased. :) However, Washington's and his wife's love story is one for the ages, and Betty Bolte did an incredible job of portraying this. I was taken back in a good way at the powerful opening of the book (no spoilers), but I know that the opening had to be intense and poignant to set the stage. I am typically not a fan of first-person narrative especially when this is in historical fiction based on an actual person (as I feel it is a challenge for anyone to get into that person's head). It took me a bit to adjust to this book, but I found the approach was done nicely and made for an excellent historical fiction book about this very brilliant woman.

Normally I avoid historical fiction when the story is based on true events and persons, partly because I know the outcome and it cannot be changed. Of course I know some of the happenings and story of Martha Washington. This story hurt my heart, so much loss, children, family and friends. This book is dry in places and Martha, was a stoic, strong yet behind the facade, a caring, loving wife, mother and grandmother. Excellent read, well written with a bit of whimsy, add this to your TBR list.
