I love this series of picture books that take something that most people wouldn't want to read about, such as the mosquito in this case, and give interesting facts about them.

Cute, and informative book.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

An amusing book that teaches all you need to know about mosquitoes in a fun, cute way. The text gives us interesting facts about the mosquito, and the illustrations give us a giggle while we learn. Kids will enjoy this- I certainly did!

Elise Gravel has hilariously delved into etymology to tell us all about why we should love 'The Mosquito.' And, how could you not after reading this endearing little book?

Elise Gravel's book, The Mosquito is an informative kids book about dreaded mosquitoes that we fight every spring, summer, and into early fall. The book concentrates mainly on why mosquitoes bite/sting/or probe humans for their blood meals for them to survive.

I'm glad that the author mentions in a roundabout way that mosquitoes are in fact more dangerous than any other living species on earth because the diseases of malaria, dengue, etc that can be transmitted to humans via these tiny little biters/stingers/probers have taken countless human lives over the decades.

This book will make a perfect read-along to kids for a biologist or scientist to read to them that has stories and other facts to share with the kids while reading the book. Most importantly this book has great potential for kids to answer all sorts of questions about mosquitoes, protection, and diseases, as well as ecosystems, ecology, habitats, and biology.

The book is also illustrated by Elise. The illustrations with the text layout conveys the messages to young eyes without overly distracting their wandering eyes.

The Mosquito is a short nonfiction children's picture book by Elise Gravel. If the mosquito wasn't such a darn pest, I would have fallen in love with it. All of the illustrations are beautiful but the illustration of Mosquito, in particular, is so cute I could see hanging it as a portrait on one of the walls in my house - maybe between a portrait of my mother-in-law and godzilla (yikes I hope I didn't give any ideas to my daughters-in-law). The hero of the story describes in detail how he "gets under your skin" in the most annoying ways and places. MC describes the life cycle of the mosquito, where it breeds, and who its predators are. The book is interesting and fun ... I might have learned a thing or two, myself.

I requested this book from Netgalley to read and review, planning to read to my grandchildren. Unfortunately, we are all still stuck in social distancing mode so it may be a while (sigh). Many thanks to NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada and Tundra Books for a delightful and memorable read.

Many thanks to Tundra Books for the complimentary e-copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I discovered Elise Gravel last Christmas, when my daughter received one of her books as a gift. I loved how educational and funny this book is. My 5 year old daughter adores it! She learned a lot about mosquitos. I will most definitely buy the paper version for her (ebooks are not so fun for a kid).

Elise Gravel's series on bugs is great! The Mosquito is informative while still being playful in both the illustrations and the way facts are presented. A great resource for curious kids or a school library!

This is a nice addition to the Disgusting Critters series by Elise Gravel. It features neat facts about mosquitoes and cute pictures that help easily convey the information to the reader.

For some reason, I didn't like this title as much as some of the others in the series. I didn't feel I learned a whole lot, and the ending seemed kind of abrupt; I even wondered if I was missing some pages.

But this book does fit in well with the rest of the series, and if you're looking for children's books about pesky critters, this might be a good one to start with.

The Mosquito by Elise Gravel
Publication Date: July 14, 2020

Description from NetGalley...
“Fast mosquito facts:
 • Distinctive trait: Leaving annoying itchy bites
 • Diet: Your blood (and nectar and plant juice)
 • Special talent: Making a terrible whining sound in your ear
The Mosquito covers habitat (mosquitos live everywhere except Antarctica and Iceland!), species (over 3,500!), history (the oldest recorded mosquito was 79 million years ago!) and much more. Although silly and off-the-wall, The Mosquito contains factual information that will both amuse and teach at the same time.”

Thank you to @NetGalley #penguinrandomhouseca #tundrabooks for the digital ARC in return for my honest review.

My thoughts...
So, I just had to read this book because it is that time of the year when those pesky mosquitoes are around. This is a non-fiction book that is appealing in its’ illustration and narrative style. It’s a funny, witty and informative way to introduce young readers to mosquitoes. The language is silly at times that would appeal to children and, accompanied by information that is fact-based and scientific. FYI, it did not make me like mosquitoes any more. 😂

The Mosquito is an engaging, informative, and amusing text. Kids, and adults, can learn much from this book! While the text is simple, the content is direct and to the point, providing accurate and helpful information. The illustrations provide support to the reader as well as a humorous touch. This text would be a great addition to any school library as it provides information to the reader, but is accessible to all elementary grade levels.

I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Elsie Gravel and Penguin Random House Canada through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This was a fun, informative book about mosquitoes, not that anyone likes mosquitoes, but now you will know more about them. The illustrations were fun and simple.

If you ever wanted to learn about the mosquito, this book is for you!

This is a cute, little non-fiction picture book for kids about those pesky little bugs that like to chomp on us! Her name is Skeeter, by the way. I think this is a delightful little way to talk about mosquitos and probably would have helped me understand what these bugs were when I was little. It's packed tight with lots of info and fun pictures to make all of the learning engaging and fun.

Three out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Tundra Books and Penguin Random House Canada for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

I am such a fan of Elise Gravel's books, and The Mosquito is no exception. The cute illustrations make the facts memorable and so fun to learn. I'm planning to order this book to read with my younger students, but I am also hoping to use it as a mentor text to help my older students understand voice.

Lots of interesting mosquito facts, my 5 year old son enjoyed it a lot. My 3 year old daughter wasn’t as interested but she still seemed to enjoy it.

The Mosquito is a new nonfiction graphic art book aimed at younger readers in The Disgusting Critters series by Elise Gravel. Originally published in French in 2017, this English language translation is due out 14th July 2020 from Penguin Random House on their Tundra imprint, has 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

The art is whimsical and appealing (see cover), and the text is fact based and scientifically accurate. The info included in the book covers preferred habitat, diet, reproduction, and different species. I liked that the book includes proper nomenclature for things such as proboscis and larva. If the terms aren't already familiar to young readers (or adults), they can be researched.

This would make a super choice for classroom/public library, homeschool library, or gift. Really cute and worthwhile subject for young readers. The graphic design and interactive dialogue would also lend itself quite easily to a bedtime read. My only quibble with the book is that it's apparently one of a series called (in English) 'Disgusting Critters' and while I do know that 'disgusting' is meant as an attractive choice of words for kids, it just sat wrong with me. Are there really any truly disgusting creatures? I wish they could've called the series Cool Critters, or Interesting Critters or something. I'm a middle aged science nerd, and I think flatworms are cool, so I guess I'm not really the target audience.

Four and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

We have a lot of mosquitoes where I live in Maine. This would be a good one to add to your nf collection. It is short, but contains some good information about these pesky insects.

Another great title in Elise Gravel's series on insects. Charming illustrations and clear, easy-to-understand text as usual. Will recommend to my patrons.
