A missing baby. A mother's nightmare.

When Izzy Grant’s newborn daughter Alys disappears, her world shatters around her. Despite an extensive search the police find no trace of the missing girl, but Izzy refuses to give up hope that her daughter will be found.

Then a note is pushed through her letterbox, warning her off.

For Izzy it’s a ray of hope, another lead for the police to follow. For DC Gaby Darin it’s another piece of the puzzle that just won’t fit. But as a long-lost friend returns to Izzy’s life with a shocking secret, Gaby realises the truth of who took Izzy’s daughter from her might lie in the past – and far closer to home than anyone could have imagined.

Very interesting premise, it just feels like the author kind of rushed it. Pembrokeshire was really written in detail and the characters were good.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Plot was good but execution was ok ok.
Izzy Grant’s boyfriend Charlie took their newborn daughter Alys out for a drive.
They never came back. After years of waiting, Izzy has almost given up hoping that they’re still alive – until a note is pushed through her door telling her they’re fine, not to look for them. Suddenly the case is top priority again, and Izzy is swarmed with faces from the past: the detective who was first on the scene to help; an old friend who vanished not long after Alys and Charlie.
zzy doesn’t know who she can trust, who is sending her notes, where Charlie and Alys might be. Her only ally is DC Gabriella Darin, recently transferred from Cardiff and fleeing a painful past of her own.
Thanks to NetGalley and HQ Digital for giving me an advance copy.

These story begins with the most devastating thing that could happen to a mom, the beginning pulls you in by your your increasing curiosity of the drama that is unfolding in this poor womans life. I was fascinated by the main character, Detective Gaby Darin, a take charge, in control ,self assured female (or what she wants you to see)who can just about handle any situation. An excellent start to a great crime procedural series! To clarify the first two books have been released under different names in the past few years. The second book is great to!! I'll just have to be patient for book 3!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of the book.

Detective Darin seems to be a minor character in her own book.
The storyline was good, but I didn't much enjoy the way it was written.
There would be scenes where amongst serious stuff alongside how good looking a character was,or how much weight they'd lost.
Didn't suit the tone of book.
I was a bit bored to be honest.

DC Gaby Darin has just moved to Pembrokeshire, Wales after a difficult work-related experience in Swansea. She is teamed up with DCI Rhys Walker, a man who seems to have hidden secrets but is a copper that she respects.

Bucket

Izzy Grant has tried to move on with her life. She now runs a cottage industry which supplies knitted goods. She lives alone with her rescue cat, Bucket. Five years ago, her partner and one week old daughter vanished without a trace. At the same time, her friend, Grace Madden disappeared. Now, while doing some Christmas shopping, Izzy spots Grace in a busy Cardiff street.

Naturally, Izzy tells the policeman who was on the case five years ago... DCI Rhys Walker. He and the new to the area DC Gaby Darin re-investigate the cold case.

Gaby is increasingly aware that her partner, DCI Rhys Walker has personal feelings for Izzy.  She tries to keep this knowledge on the back burner whilst working the case.

Meanwhile, Izzy does more than a little amateur sleuthing herself.

Izzy receives a postcard from Charlie, her daughter's father:

With renewed hope that her daughter might still be alive, Izzy makes every effort to determine what happened five years ago. Her efforts put her in grave danger.

MY THOUGHTS

I was pleased to make the acquaintance of a new female police protagonist. DC Gaby Darin was an interesting character. Bright, brash, overweight, lonely, and very good at her job.

The Pembrokeshire setting was well-described and the plot contained more than one 'red-herring' which will please most mystery readers. One of these had me thinking that I had the story all figured out - I was dead wrong. Another red-herring led the story down a path that I felt wasn't resolved as much as it should have been. Finally, I put my own brain in gear and guessed the outcome of the story. I was nearly at the end of the book, but as they say 'better late than never'. LOL

I am convinced that "Silent Cry" will be well-received by all those readers who delight in a well-written police procedural mystery. I look forward to the sequel which has DC Gaby Darin starting out again at a new police station  - this time in Llandudno.

Booklover BEV review
This book tells the story of Izzy Grant finding happiness with Charlie Dawson and excited to be awaiting the arrival of their first child. But nothing is straight forward for Izzy as you read on. After the birth of baby Alys, Charlie takes her and goes missing. DI Rhys Walker on the case and five years on DS Gaby Darin joins the case with their disappearance. This book is full of twists and turns to the story. You will be gripped into it all. There's so much happening I recommend it to all reading genre's. This author has no doubt wrote a best seller with this book. I just couldn't stop reading and moving in places. Well set out chapter after chapter. Just a fabulous story till the end.

I read Missing in Wales last year and was delighted to be asked to read an early ARC of Silent Cry – more than delighted as the story had changed quite a bit with, I think, a tighter storyline and crisper writing.
Silent Cry is a Welsh-set crime series and Jenny O’Brien brings out a sense of place very well. The story concerns Izzy Grant whose partner, Charlie, vanished with their new borne daughter five years before. From an initial breakdown, she’d learned to deal with the loss by withdrawing and burying herself in her business. When a postcard comes from Charlie telling her to forget about them, she decided she can’t just give up on seeing her daughter again.
The police haven’t given up but it takes this postcard to reinvigorate the case – and the new member of the team, Detective Gabriella Darin, also takes an interest in the case, seeing it with fresh eyes and puzzling over things that had and hadn’t been done 5 years before.
There are lots of twists and turns along the way to a very satisfactory ending. Detective Gaby Darin is a perfect addition to the crime scene genre and I look forward to seeing her character develop over the next few books.
