This was my first book by Liz Mistry, and I really enjoyed it! I do wish I had read the first in the Nikki Parekh book first, but I guess I'll just have to go back and read it now. I thought the story was fast-paced and interesting - a really good British police procedural!

DS Felicity Springer is feeling hungover and sick as she's leaving a conference. She gets behind a van on a back road and notices something concerning. She follows the van and phones the police, and then.....she's gone. DS Nikki Parekh and her partner DC Sajid Malik are on the case. As they are investigating the disappearance, a body turns up, then another, then another.

Returning to Bradford, West Yorkshire from a conference in Wakefield, Detective Sergeant Felicity Springer is shot and abducted. She had been following a suspicious Transit van and contacted the Communication room.
Detective Sergeant Nikki Parekh and her Police partner Detective Constable Sajid Malik arrive at the missing Police Woman's car. Nikki and the Spaniel ( her nickname for Springer ) do not get on but she is determined to find her, hopefully alive!
The situation is not helped by her Boss Detective Chief Inspector Archie Hegley arriving to join Nikki and Sajid and is very distressed. Nikki is later very suspicious when Archie sends her a text message to elicit information but won't tell her what it is about!
Unbeknown to the Police there is a people smuggling organization who want to get involved in all illegal activities in the area and plan to confuse the Police with various methods. The organization is headed up by someone calling himself Xavier with Cyclops and a thug called Bullet as his henchmen.
This is the second book featuring Nikki and Sajid. The author who lives in the Bradford area also has another series featuring a Detective Inspector Gus McGuire. I know the area well, so it was an additional treat to read this book. I have already downloaded the first book to read. Recommended as a good read.

When DS Felicity Springer leaves a conference she feels hungover and embarrassed but it doesn’t stop her following the van in front of her when she sees a hand hanging out the back. Then she crashes into it and disappears. Nikki and her partner DC Sajid Malik are given the case and this is only the start of an eventful week for them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Silence which is a high octane read with a disturbing and upsetting theme. It is told from various points of view, but, rather than being distracting as I often find in this approach, it makes the novel more absorbing as each character has a compelling tale to tell and the reader can’t help but root for most of them, bad guys excluded obviously because they are so bad you just want them unmasked and punished. All will become clear when you read the novel.

The novel is non stop action with a high body count and plenty of domestic and professional drama. There is no time to relax as Nikki and Saj race from one crime scene to the next when not bickering about the secrets Nikki is keeping and the bigger ones her boss, Archie is keeping. It is well done as it keeps the tension high and the reader guessing. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what would be revealed next.

DS Nikki Parekh is fast becoming one of my favourite characters. She is prickly and often a lightening rod for conflict but she’s smart, dogged and direct. I like that she’s not perfect, often unsure of herself outside work and an outright moaning Minnie at times but so natural and relatable. She makes the novel a great read.

Broken Silence is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Oh how I enjoyed this masterful police procedural. Fabulous characters and masterful plotting that shines a light on the all too real problem of modern slavery. I hadn't read this author before, but will be going back to read her first book and will be highly anticipating the third. What I particularly liked was the setting and the realistic dialogue, especially the minor niggles between close colleagues.

This is a good mystery that is fast paced and with a gripping plot dealing with modern day police issues like drugs and sex trafficking

DS Felicity Springer just wants to go home. The police conference was awful, she feels like death warmed over and it's snowing! Thinking she maybe a touch over the limit from the previous evening Felicity decides to avoid the main roads and finds herself in a nightmare situation when she realises someone in the van ahead of her is in danger. Calling 999 and then losing control of her car in the bad weather is the last thing she remembers.

DS Nikita Parekh doesn't like DS Springer but with partner DC Sajid Malik, finds herself trying to discover what happened to her missing colleague at the same time as investigating a growing number of murder cases. As the tension begins to mount in her beloved home town of Bradford Nikki suspects things are only going to get a great deal worse before they start to improve.

This is a powerful novel about people trafficking and modern day slavery which made, in some parts, for difficult reading. In the author's notes Liz Mistry says she attended a conference on these topics but has toned things down for her second book in the DS Parekh series! However much she has done so it is still an horrific indictment of life in this country and how difficult it is to stop these terrible things happening to some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Although this isn't an easy book to enjoy because of the subject matter it is a definite page turner and first class example of a police procedural mystery. The story is fast paced, the characters realistic and the relationships between the main protagonists are believable and interwoven with a caustic sense of gallows humour. This is the second book in this series and while the first does get a few mentions nothing is given away. I haven't read the previous installment but absolutely will be doing so now I've discovered just how good this series is.

I'd not read any books by Liz Mistry before this, but I'll certainly be looking for more! This is the second in a series featuring DS Nikki Parekh and, although there are references to the backstory, I don't think its essential that you have read the previous novel.

After a multi-agency conference, police officer Felicity Springer leaves the venue for her drive home. As she heads through the country lanes, she sees someone trying to get her attention from inside the van in front. Felicity Springer doesn't make it home and an investigation is launched into her disappearance. However, that proves just the tip of the iceburg and DS Nikki Parekh and her team are thrown into a complex and dangerous investigation in Bradford's criminal underworld.

I'll admit that this is a bit more gritty and grim than my usual reads, but it's also compelling and very pacy - I kept planning on reading one more chapter to see what happened until I realised it was 3am and I should just finish the book! I liked the portrayal of multicultural Bradford and the diversity within the police team and Nikki herself is an interesting protagonist. Often the personal lives of the police officers can overshadow the actual crime story in this kind of novel but this never happens here - the plot is tight and twisty throughout.

I'd recommend this to anyone who likes police procedurals, especially those with a feisty female police officer in charge. Just don't pick up this book unless you have a clear run of reading time in which to finish it because you absolutely won't want to put it down.

The next in the detective Nikki Parekh series - this got off to a cracking start. DI Felicity Springer leaves a conference centre the morning after the night before, feeling decidedly jaded. She finds herself behind a white van and notices that a hand is waving from one of the tail lights. She dials 999 but too late as the van brakes and she crashes in to it, a man exits the van and there is a gun shot.
The race is on to find her but when a young women is found murdered and other violent crimes are reported it becomes clear there is a link to the missing detective and a possible link to human trafficking.
I enjoyed the first half of this book more than the second but it’s pacy and worth the read.

This is a gripping book to read but its importance is much more serious than just being a thriller. The cast of police have modern issues in their private lives involving sexual disclosure and race as well. These are modern issues needing to be aired in a way that helps readers to understand how these matters influence behaviour. The main focus of the book is on other modern and serious events. People trafficking and sexual exploitation hit the press regularly. This brings them to life and so educates readers in the ways this can be done and its effect on lives. This book performs an essential social purpose as well as holding the reader's attention to a dramatic ending. I recommend this book.

Fast paced contemporary thriller dealing with many of today's problems. Drugs,prostitution and modern day slavery. Not for the faint hearted.

Driving home she follows a van, but sees what looks like a hand waving at her from a rear light fitting. While on the phone to the police she rear ends her vehicle into the van.
DS Nikki Parekh, along with side kick DC Sajid Malik, are tasked to find DS Springer, when her car is found empty but covered in blood. Springer isn’t Nikki favourite person, but it this doesn’t stop her from doing everything she can to find her. When a woman’s body is found, they discover it’s not Springer. As more bodies keep appearing, the task of finding Springer becomes more involved, particularly when it seems that the cases may all be connected.
Beautifully written, with so many twists and turns you almost feel dizzy, but in a good,way. I hadn’t read the first book with Nikki and Sajid, but this definitely can be read as a stand alone book. The modern slavery aspect is very relevant today and is well explored by the author. The characters are believable and there is good dialogue between them all. This had me gripped from the first page and I found myself holding my breath at times. An excellent read.

This series is turning into a real cracker, to say that it kept me up until the early hours would be a real understatement. Liz Mistry has a way of bringing the characters to life. Bradford is where the books are set, it is a northern town with its fair share of problems. The team has to deal with horrendous crimes which include drugs, prostitution and modern-day slavery which go hand in hand with extreme violence and murder. It is a city of many cultures and the book highlights the things that can go wrong in a multicultural society one of which is homophobia and extreme hatred of family members if they are found out. It is quite a harrowing read but not over the top with gratuitous violence.

DS Nikki Parekh and Saj Malik are back in this second instalment. In this story they have to deal with murder and modern day slavery. With bodies being dumped all across the city, the police force are massively stretched. Nikki and Saj need to find out who is behind everything going on.

The story is set in Bradford, the descriptive writing makes you feel as if you are there and know the area. This is a fast paced and tense read that had me hooked from the start. It is sad to know that slavery is something that is still going on in the world.

Very gripping from the very beginning till really the lats page. Fast pace of action which makes you hold your breath all the time!! I had read "Last Request" by Liz, found it good, and "Broken Silence" even better. I also enjoy the main characters whom I would gladly meet! I will definitely recommend/offer this book while waiting the next one with Nikki! Thank you Liz for letting me read this story on NetGalley.

Featuring DS Nikita Parekh this is the second in a new series and promising to be as good as DI Gus McGuire's novels

This novel deals with all to familiar Modern day slavery and is very gritty and thrilling

With bodies appearing all over and arson breaking out the police are stretched to their limit but these seem to be started as distractions as their seems to be someone wanting to the Mr Big of Bradford and extinguish all their rivals

A must read for all fans of Liz Mistry Novels

Broken Silence is another excellent crime thriller involving DS Nikita Parekh and her sidekick Sajid.
A police office goes missing after she calls in to report she is following a van where she can see an arm poking out through the back break light. The dead body of a brutally murdered young girl is discovered and then another body appears, all in Bradford. Slowly a pattern emerges with possible links to modern slavery, drug dealing and prostitution organised by one man, all adding to the intensity of the investigation by Nikki and her team.
With the cast of previous characters and some new good and downright evil ones there are many strands to these crimes that need to be brought together.
Some moments of real inhumanity being described but also some light relief with the banter between Nikki and Sajid and her family. This all adds to a really good enthralling entertaining story.
I still miss Gus from the other series of books from this author but this is just as page turning. The reveals at the end are excellent as are the characters comeuppance.
