This nonfiction novel chronicles the romance between the King and Wallis Simpson. I found this new book did not add any information to the story of King Edward and Wallis Simpson that I did not already know. Thus, this felt more like a re-hash of many known facts. As to Wallis, the author did not really paint her in a positive light. Therefore, she continued to remain unlikable. I recommend this for readers who do not know much about the love story of Wallis Simpson and King Edward. However, biographers like Andrew Morton, Anne Sebba, and Moniek Bloks have done a better job detailing their love story!

King Edward VIII of Great Britain stunned the world, when by his own choice, he abdicated from the throne and so he could marry the woman he loved Wallis Simpson.

The King and Mrs. Simpson looks at the couple’s childhoods, Wallis’s two previous marriages, and what King Edward VIII gave up to marry her. As the head of the church of England, Edward was rather naive in thinking he could marry a twice-divorced woman, his mother Queen Mary refused to even meet Wallis, the government couldn’t support him, they were hounded by the press, Wallis had to flee to France, the English public was outraged and King Edward VIII received death threats.

At the time it was a different and judgemental world the couple lived in the 1930's, Erin Schulz ignores the rumors, her novella is based on facts, it made for very interesting reading and four stars from me.

An okay overview of the months around Edward VIII's abdication, but seems to skirt too easily over more serious issues (such as the couples Nazi leanings) and take a romanticized view of the events.

While I am grateful to the author and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this title, a busy schedule got in the way, and I was unable to read it before it was archived on Netgalley. I will be looking for a physical copy of this title at my local bookstore!

A good overview of the meeting of the King and Mrs Simpson and leading up to his abdication. There is also some background on both of them. It played down the grand love affair you normally hear about. Left to facts vs. romanticizing it..

Ever since watching The Crown I wanted to know about King Edward and him abdicating the thrown for true love. This was the perfect pocket sized book that had just the right amount of information needed to learn what I wanted to without overwhelming me! If you are like me and want to know more about these two, definitely pick this book up!

I wanted to thank the Net Galley for the free copy of the book for review.

I must be honest, I did not know much about this "royal" couple when I obtained the book, so my very limited knowledge was vague, at best. I found this to be based in facts and good primary and secondary sources, but also a bit off-putting in the way it was arranged. There were some organizational issues that confused me as a reader and I feel there was some bias in the way the relationship was portrayed to the reader. (I definitely feel as if there were pieces important to the story that were skimmed over and missed entirely). I certainly felt the author's passion for Mrs. Wallis, but maybe the biographical format wasn't the best way to get across that love.

This book is quite short and as such it is light on informative. There are many omissions in the narrative and little in the way of character exploration. However as an introduction to the relationship between Wallis and Edward/the abdication it is clear and well written.

Really an overview of the love story that captured the hearts of the British public in the 1930s. With his abdication, King Edward VIII gave up everything for "the woman he loved." This is really a short look at this fascinating time in history, and whets your appetite for more detail. Well done.

Romantic drivel about a complex and not very likable woman. If you think The Fuke and Duchess of Windsor was the greatest love story of all time, this book is for you. For a more objective account, you can read dozens of other books

The King and Mrs. Simpson is a fairly short but informative book about the love affair of the King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. After reading the book one might want to research more on the topic. It is a great introduction to the most controversial love story of the modern history. I think the author did a great deal of the research but tried to eliminate some of the boring names and facts. In a book like that I'd want more of the factual material and more references to the sources. Some of the parts were just a wikipedia-looking narration.
Even though the author herself states that it is a short narration and the reason it was written at the end of the book, more detailed information could have been provided.

A great little short book about the courtship and eventual marriage of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Told through a limited number of pages, this book cuts straight to the facts and isn't a characterization of what happened, it is what happened.

Wallis Simpson was invited to an event that King Edward VIII attended before he was crowned king and as they spent more and more time together they realized that there was something growing between them and they had some tough decisions to make. I appreciated hearing the real truth as to Wallis' reaction to his possible abdication and how this would truly impact the family and the world.

As a fan of the show The Crown, this read was great to make me see a behind the scenes of how Elizabeth ended up on the throne and how this truly impacted her and her family. I would love more small concise books like this on other subjects.

I was given a free copy of this e-book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is a light, quick read about the events leading up to the abdication of King Edward VIII. There is a short introduction to both the Duke and Duchess of Windsor regarding their lives prior to meeting to provide a background to the primary subject of the book: the meeting of the two, the evolution of their relationship, and the abdication itself.

The author does not bring up any problematic parts of their story that historians and other biographers have mentioned in other works. She mentions that book was initially published privately as limited edition for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor Historical Society.

I would recommend this book as a brief introduction to the subject matter. If you are interested in a deeper dive into this story, you will likely prefer a different book.

Was she a bad woman? Was she a gold digger and social climber out to get whatever she could?

I must admit I never had a very good impression of Wallis Simpson though I knew very little about the whole story surrounding the abdication. After reading this book, however, I must say that I at least sympathize with her. Who are we to judge her and the circumstances that led her to make those life decisions, which may or may not have had an impact on the Duke's decisions.

This is not a comprehensive book about the life of the Duke and Duchess by any means. The focus seems to be on their background and what happened just prior to and after the abdication. There is little about their life after exile.

This book was originally written for members of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor Historical Society in 2008. If the purpose of the book was to put Wallis Simpson in a better light, they have partially succeeded with me. That is, until I read more of their story after the exile on online sites! I am more convinced than ever that the King used Mrs SImpson as an excuse to get away from the royal duties that he just seemed to despise!

With the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (ie Prince Harry and Meghan) stepping down from royal duties not too long ago, interest in the story of the abdication may have been revived. The republication of this book seems timely.

I enjoyed reading The King and Mrs Simpson. It is well written in my humble opinion. I like that the author used the memoirs of the Duke and Duchess as the source of information. I also like that she wrote it in such a way that the narrative is highly readable and not full of quotes like some historical works that I have read. I hope to read more biographies by Erin Schulz.

Thank you Netgalley and W.S. Beetle & Company for the review copy. This is my honest review.

As a big fan of the British royal family and The Crown, I was excited to get my hands on this book and learn more about this infamous couple. I knew the highlights but I feel like I learned so much about about them and I can see how much the royal family has and hasn't changed since going through that era..

I love British royal history but didn't know much about Wallis Simpson so I really enjoyed reading this book and learning more

Although i was not completely unaware of the whole Edward/Wallis story, reading this book gave me a broader point of view on the whole scandalous relationship between the two. I didn't like the book that much, because as i did a bit of research on the couple, i realized there were important highlights of their lives that were totally ignored throughout the book. I don't believe the narration was of a neutral nature, rather biased; leaving out the darkest spots of Wallis Simpson's character and other important and unpleasant moments of her life out. But it could be a nice read for Meghan and Harry fans out there.

This book is a concise look at the relationship of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. It follows their first meeting up until his abdication. It is not an in depth story about their romance and the politics of the day, rather it's a snapshot of a love story that changed the course of history. It's incredible that if Edward hadn't abdicated, Queen Elizabeth would not have been on the throne. There are many quotes from the couple throughout the book and the author's writing style made this book seem as though it was a historical fiction, allowing the reader to be a fly on the wall in the palace, hotel rooms, and chauffeured vehicles that were all part of this wild scandal. The book is written from a neutral perspective so it would not contribute to the many unflattering and probably untrue biographies of the couple.

If you are like the many other people around the world who have become fascinated with Harry and Meghan, whose own love story eerily echoes the trials and tribulations of Edward and Wallis, than this book would be a good read. Or if you would like a succinct account of who Edward and Wallis were and how their relationship unfolded, this is the book for you.
