I had high expectations for this book after reading the description, and after reading, I can honestly say this book knocked it out of the park and wildly exceeded those expectations. The book said everything I’ve been thinking about the way we look at what bodies are good bodies and how we make assumptions about what we as people should strive for, that I couldn’t put into words myself. I am truly in awe of this incredible read and would recommend to anyone, and have been recommending to everyone I know! Chapter seven was particularly informative and made me think. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital copy of this book, I'll definitely be getting a physical copy when it's available.

Sitting Pretty is a Body-Positive memoir unlike any I have read before. Taussig’s humor and honesty bring you to a greater understanding of empathy for the perspective of people with different abilities. As a teacher, I could really relate to her fears and hang ups about relating to a room full of teenagers, and the impact that a teacher can make on their perspectives. I enjoyed this book, the respect for all marginalized people groups, and Taussig’s fearless pursuit of being seen. I highly recommend this book.

Sitting Pretty
The View from My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body

I am reviewing a copy of Sitting Pretty through HarperCollins and Netgalley:

Sitting Pretty is a memoir in essays from disability advocate as well as creator of the Instagram account @sitting_pretty. Rebecca Taussig processes a lifetime of memories in order to paint a beautiful portrait of a body that moves and looks different than most.

While Growing up as a Paralyzed girl in the 1990's and Early 2000's Taussig only saw disablity depicted as something Monstrous, such as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, or something Inspirational like Helen Keller, and even something angelic like Forest Gump.

Rebekah writes about what it means to live with a body that doesn't fit with rhythm and reflection. She covers everything from the complications of charity, to living independently as well as dependently. She deals with everything from dealing with intimacy to how the
pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life.

Rebecca Taussig reminds us that disability will affect us all at some point either directly or indirectly. In exploring this reality through lyrical essays, the need for more stories, for my voices being heard is pointed out.

I give Sitting Pretty five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Sitting Pretty is the first book I have read that really dives into the world of "this is my body and how it works in your world". An honest look into the life of a girl and a disability that does not define her. From a child of nothing can stop me to an adult that needs to connect not only with her students but the people in the world around her.

Rebekah Taussing does an excellent job meeting the reader where they are then showing them how it looks and feels from where she is. Worth the read.

I really enjoyed reading this book. As someone who has a disability and is in a wheelchair I could definitely relate to a lot of the things said in this book. It was truly an honest story and very raw. I give this 5 stars and really enjoyed reading this book. Thank you Netgalley for giving me an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the book you read when you need a new outlook on life. It was so well written and worth your time. I love books that tell a real honest story and this one fully delivers.

I really had a hard time with this one. Her family were so neglectful and oblivious to her (making her drag her body on the ground for years vs getting a wheelchair) and she doesn’t really seem to see it.
