I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I met and interviewed Gen. Curtis LeMay several years before he died, and I never knew such a compassionate side of him existed.

Old "Iron Ass" will never be the same in my book again.

A great read..

Beyond Valor is the story about Red Erwin, a radio operator on a B-29 flying missions against Japan. When he attempted to drop a phosphorus bomb from the plane, it exploded. He was severely burned, but managed to pick up the burning bomb and drop it out a window, saving the crew and the plane. He wasn’t expected to live, and a Medal of Honor was quickly awarded him.
This book is written by Red’s grandson. Besides a review of Red’s life, it covers the history of burn treatment, post traumatic stress disorder, the history of the Medal of Honor, POW Hap Halloran’s experience in Japan, Harry Truman and his similarities to Red, the B-29, firebombing, and George Patton’s prayer during the Battle of the Bulge.
The most interesting part for me was Red’s story. Also some good thoughts on the Medal of Honor. Heroes aren’t born in a moment, but in a lifetime leading up to the moment.
I received a free copy in exchange for my opinion.
