This was an okay book - it sounded really interesting and definitely has a great premise! It just wasn't really for me.

3,5 stars, rounded down to 3. This book sounded incredibly intriguing (I also love a good groundhog day story), but I found myself annoyed by the characters and couldn't enjoy the story. I understand that this is because the characters were mostly 14 year olds, and as someone almost a decade older, I can't relate to as much of their story as I would've had I read this at age 14. More importantly, the "time loop" element of the story (the premise!) is dealt with too neatly for my liking - I would've enjoyed more conflict over its resolution. In the end, this is a fine young YA, but nothing so special that I would actively seek it out for my personal library.

This was a pretty cute, feel-good type story, but lacked any meaning or moments that made me go "damn, that's spectacular." Overall, not a terrible book, but I would have liked something more *exotic*

A huge thank you to NetGalley, Random House Children's, and Sarah Lariviere for sending me an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This was a solid read. My goodness, what a ride. I'll be the first to say, it's a lot of math and science and a whole lot of trial and error, but this book was fascinating to me. I was hooked from the first page and I rode that all the way through this book. I had to know how Nephele's story played out.

The setting was beautiful and as unique as our main character Nephele. Named after an obscure character in Greek mythology- a freaking cloud nyph- Nephele has always been a bit odd; Name aside, she's got an obsession and an understanding of math that marks her as a genius at a very young age. She's always been an outcast and naturally wants to make some real friends, wants to have a do-over to become more well-liked. So when a time travel book comes along, she latches onto the idea and starts to build a time machine. What could go wrong?

This book was full of life lessons, hard truths, and a lot of growing up and realizing you'd been doing the wrong thing all along. This was one hell of a coming 0f age story.

I received an arc for this book from netgalley. I think it was a cute story but it was lacking. I felt like there was a huge build up and then just nothing. Nephele starts out with one main reason to build a time travel machine and when things go wrong she has multiple reasons to fix it. She does learn some valuable lessons along the way but the ending was just disappointing. I feel like she went from being a true scientist to being just a love sick teenager. There were a lot of what ifs that I can understand with the topic of time travel and science but I also feel when its story you have the creative freedom to make things possible. I just think that it is a really good plot that was not executed well.

“Time Travel For Love And Profit” is centered around a high school freshman who is determined to travel back in time and redo her freshman year, but ends up getting stuck in a time loop in the process.

I like the time-travel aspect of the plot, and that was probably the most interesting part of the book for me. While I wasn’t as captivated by it as I was hoping to be, I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book! I was really excited for this book, and thought the concept was great! However, the execution of it was a bit of a let down. I simply couldn't get into the writing style, or the characters, although others might like it! I also found the book a lot slower than I personally enjoy books being.

I think this might have been the strangest book I've ever read. I'm really not sure where even to begin with this review so forgive me if it's a little discombobulated.

Strange....so strange. I thought the more of this book I read, the more I would understand, but that wasn't the case. The more I read, the more confused I became. The storyline, the main character, all of it was so odd. But, weirdly enough, I was so intrigued that I didn't even realize I'd read half of the book until I did.

While we're talking about the first half of the book, I should point out that it's slow. The whole book is kinda slow, but the beginning is especially so. I think part of the pace has to do with the face that there is not too much dialogue exchanged. It's mostly the main character talking to herself and thinking about things.

This book was written pretty well though. That's why I decided to give it 2 stars instead of one. It was just everything else that I didn't like.

Honestly, I'm not even sure what I just read. The synopsis only gives the smallest of glimpses into this book. If you like books with an odd voice and premise and don't mind taking a wild mind trip, then I guess this book is for you.

The problem is, the concept of this book is great. Caught in a time loop, Fi must relive her freshman year over and over again. And, is supposed to learn from her mistakes. Only, she doesn't. She goes back in time 10 times, and still doesn't really learn. It is more like she is forced to learn, but she doesn't learn organically.

The problem I had with the book was that I didn't care. I didn't care about Fi. I didn't care about Vera. I didn't care about her parents, who are never really developed, and I certainly didn't care about Jazz, who eventually becomes her love interest.

Fi just didn't make any sense. She didn't accidentally repeat the time loop. She repeated it because she thought she could do a better job each time. But, instead of wanting to make friends, she just kept pushing them away, until she met people who wouldn't let her.

I might have liked Fi better if I had understood her, but we don't even get inside her head when the story is told in the first person, and that is a tough thing to do.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

What a fun story! This is the kind of book that makes you enjoy reading again! I think it would be a big hit with the early high schoolers who would be able to identify with that searching for you are and wanting to below feeling. It was funny, also made me consider the ethics of time travel and if it was positive or negative as well as the implications of AI. I loved seeing the different friends throughout the book and it was never what I expected. I’m not someone who usually likes sci-fi or fantasy, but this was exceptional! Must read, instant classic!

A great addition to time travel fiction, and in the rare YA category! I really enjoyed our main character, Nephele, with her unapologetic genius, drive to get things right, and slow realization and growth over her many, many Freshman years (what a torture!). Her love of her family, and development of true friends, was wonderful to see.

Time Travel for Love and Profit

I love Sarah Lariviere's writing style. So much so, that I'd label this novel "humor" before I'd call it "fantasy." It's definitely scifi, though, and I appreciate that the author didn't mess with my mind too much trying to keep the time shifts straight. That alone makes this an accessible, entertaining story. This story really has something for anyone: humor, science fiction, time travel, friendships, bildungsroman, parents, romance...

The author's metaphors throughout the book are excellent; they beautifully enhance the story Lariviere's telling. The humor was subtle instead of guffaw-inducing, so I really enjoyed it. (Like Nephele in 2nd grade forgiving her college level math tutor for not always getting the math right.) And sometimes it's irreverent "Toast is eternal."

What I don't know from the electronic preview reader's copy I received is if the book shows the 'Chicago, 1955' picture. As a school librarian, I, of course, had to look it up. http://sfmoma.org/artwork/2005.474/ Seeing the photograph adds so much to understanding and relating to the story and to Nephele.

I don't know if I'd do what Nephele did, but that's the beauty of the story: it lends itself to allowing the readers to discuss with themselves (or others) what they would do in Nephele's circumstance. This book would be appropriate for middle or high school readers. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was an expertly done time travel book filled with sweetness. Would be a great book club discussion... Would you go back to redo freshman year the right way? And what decision would you make at the end of the book?

Can not review this book because I am a member of the Florida Teen Reads committee for 2020-2021. I will put it on the "long list" for consideration
